We set off east at 9.35am not sure of how far we would progress in the direction of Cappadocia, our destination some 500 miles / 800 kms / to the east in central Turkey. The first stage was along the D400 coastal highway which we had travelled previously, then after 50 miles /80 kms we turned away from the coast road and headed into the mountains on the D350 which is known as the Inland Route from Fethiye (a major town on the coast) to Antalya one of the major cities on the southern seaboard of Turkey. After an exhilarating drive through spectacular ... read more

Saturday morning dawned and with breakfast done we were on the road by ten, only a short drive thorough the mountain plains and then into the City of Konya which was massive. Gripping the maps, reading signs and following James’ instructions with a few high rise over-passes, we left the city behind. Into the mountain roads we cruised with only a ninety kilometres to go. Woolly says – I was over the moon having seen seven big flocks of sheep, nothing unusual in that you might think but this IS Turkey. Turkey has Goats, millions and millions of goats, sheep are few and far between and a whole herd is something we haven’t seen for quite a few countries. We arrived in the town of Beysehir which was to be our stop for the night, we ... read more

Day 8 Sunday 3rd October 2010 58 miles Started out in bright sun again to pass by some old unoccupied houses of wood where the animals were kept underneath the living quarters. We saw another old well on the roadside and used it to top up our supplies. Lunch of fish by old antique stall at top of hill in the middle of nowhere. Need I say we were into a head wind again, maybe force 4. We evenually arrived in Yalvac with enough time to visit the ruins of the ancient city of Antioch, built over 2,000 yrs ago. This was very interesting and we saw the skill of the old stone carvers of Roman times. AS soon as the sun went down it went cold so I rushed back since I had no extra ... read more

Day 7 Saturday 2nd October 2010 57 miles Up at 7am to a packed breakfast which we ate stood up with no hot brew so we loaded up and then had chai on street outside from chai house next door. Two miles out of town, during which we pushed off a van with a flat battery, and then an 8 mile climb up a very dusty rough road, in the process of being widened, to the top of the col at 1500m before plunging down to the lake . The road then went up and down for miles past women carrying piles of short pine logs from the forest by donkey. I think these were used for making charcoal. We saw our first ancient well operated by a balance beam. As we approached Beyhsehir we saw ... read more

Yes, that's right. All this cycling has left me, well this kind of embarrassing but as I'm amongst friends (!), with a nasty rash akin to nappy rash. I know ladies don't sweat but this "lady" is sure doing more than her fair share! Next trip I'm going to pack a couple of proper pairs of cycle shorts, get some toe clips, invest in a gel seat, maybe even buy a new bike... In short I would probably do things differently. I am spending another day here in Beysehir (which on first impressions is not as beautiful as Egirdir even though it's on a lake) so I can see about getting a salve of sorts to ease the pain and to rest a little. I've got a big day coming up to get to Konya, my ... read more
