The journey to Bergama was fine - acres & acres of lush green fields - & the road through Izmir seemed a lot quicker than coming down – maybe we were just used to it by now? We arrived looking for a different camp site to the one we stayed at when we drove south but no. We remembered that we had tried to find it last time & saw the sign for here, the Berksoy Hotel. It's fine – a grassed area adjoining the pool & outside restaurant. It must be school holiday time as on both afternoons they have held swimming classes for about 40 children; a bit noisy but they didn't stay long.

Next to us are a pleasant couple from Quebec in a French plated motorhome – they speak ok English, which you may think is obvious but their native tongue is French. They winter in Mexico for 3 months & travel for 3 months in the summer, leaving the motorhome in France.

Today we wandered into town to have a mooch around & to find a decent grocery shop, a couple of miles walk. Saw a BAT logo'd car in a car park! Found the shop & caught a dolmus back. After lunch Cathy caught some zzz's, then a quick cycle ride & then we had a swim to cool off with Dianne the Canadian lady. Unfortunately Dianne told Cathy of a good clothes shop...went off her very quickly.

Around here, even though we're not on the coast, they fire a loud maroon each evening at around 8.50pm. We couldn't work out why - but then we realised it was officially sunset & the day's fast was over for Ramadan. Mind you the hotel staff stuff themselves at lunchtime...

We had an average evening meal sat by the pool & an early night as tomorrow we walk into town, catch a cable car & visit Pergamon, the ancient city ruins – more culture.
