Being assigned to work in a remote area where you can only see vast deserts and camels makes someone a stranger when the latter had a chance to visit the city. A lot has changed since I've visited this place. The developments in this area have made it more attractive to locals, tourists and expat like me. A nice sea view, lots of green and breezy weather compared to our work site which is dry and barren. Al-Khobar is a big city, and one of the cleanest and neatest with huge shopping malls, hotels, wide streets, and high-rise buildings. Btw, Al-Khobar has become the first city in the MENA region to benefit from a pilot project on the fifth-generation wireless network, or 5G network. Come now and visit Al-Khobar!... read more

Never too late to post this 2016 Christmas gathering with colleagues though simple, we enjoyed celebrating it away from home. This is as usual for expats working in the foreign land and the challenge is that you are in a country that does not celebrate this kind of holiday season. Got teary eyed when this time of the year comes around while I'm here. How one will wish to be back home to celebrate Christmas with family and friends. Now this is the mouth-watering part of the celebration: We all agreed to meet on Friday-off on December 23rd at Hot Pot Restaurant in 4th St, Thuqbah, Al Khobar. This is a smokeless Grill and Shabu-Shabu Restaurant where you can cook-and-eat-all-you-can!! 'till your gut explodes (LOL-just joking) with variety of choices to cook-and-eat like shrimp, dumplings, marinated ... read more

Spending my Friday-off at Corniche Al-Khobar, an extension of Half Moon Bay via Aziza beach stretching to the city of Dammam where green spaces abound along the coast where friends and families both local and expats go to enjoy a spectacular sea views. You will see lots of Kabayans here enjoying their weekend with families and friends. Some of them play RC car while others are fishing and patiently waiting for a catch. Others enjoy riding on their bicycles, jogging or having small snacks with a cup of coffee or tea. All work stress are relieved with the spectacular view of the sea.... read more

In Octombrie 2011 am poposit pentru prima data in KSA.

Al-Khobar is one of the major cities in the Eastern province, the other two cities being Dammam and Dhahran. These three cities function as a closely linked triangle, that has its existence for centuries now. The History of Al Khobar is very interesting as it is a part of the magnificent Saudi Arabia. It is said, that, in the past, the Al-Khobar used to be a small port on the famous Arabian Gulf. This port of the past was mainly inhabited by the fishermen. But, the small port was soon to be one of the greatest discoveries. Oil was found in Al-Khobar and it was transformed into a busy industrial port. However, this does not end Al-Khobar's History, rather, this era saw the beginning of Al-Khobar as one of the major ports in the Middle East. ... read more

Today was an eventful day, but not everything comes out as planned… The day started with a $2.00 breakfast consisting of a Spanish omelet (no tomatoes), toast, and coffee. This is a weekend tradition with me, unless of course I have the famous Dining Hall waffles or perhaps the pancakes. Well, the coffee is a tradition. After breakfast, I caught the 9:00 am bus to Al-Khobar with “no photos please” Dave, Koen, and Andrej. We visited my favorite gift store to make some strategic purchases and tried to stay cool in the 116 degree heat. The staying cool part didn’t work out so well, especially in my long pants and long sleeve shirt (I can’t show any skin, you know). I took them to Latif, which loyal readers will remember as having the best Zatar (a ... read more

This morning Werner, Pat, Don, and I headed for Khobar. I am now an official Khobar tour guide. However, one place that I had seen - and had even been in - is Latif (La-teef) bakery. It has been recommended to me by several people, so I wanted to give it a try. The place is really a hole-in-the wall. I suppose the most decorative attraction is the box of stacked water, or perhaps the discarded industrial size mixer that is by the door. However, if you ask nicely, you can get a box of tissues to use as napkins (that’s pretty common here, by the way). Pat had eaten here previously and had a few suggestions. It’s called a bakery, but it’s more like Wolfgang Puck designer pizzas. Take a look at the menu. I ... read more

I'm willing to bet that I'm the only person who has a blog title like that! Last night we went to the a place here at Aramco that has amateur singers. It was like being in a small bar in Bemidji, Minnesota but without the cigarette smoke and without the drinks. Pretty cheesy stuff. But one song they sang was called "You're an Aramcon" sung to the tune of Secret Agent Man. Pretty funny. Today was a day off since it’s our weekend. In fact, we have three days off because Saturday is an Aramco holiday. So it was time to head to Al-Khobar. For those of you who read my blog in February, you know this is one of my favorite places. I went to breakfast after sleeping fashionably late (7 am) and saw Bob, ... read more

Last Night in Khobar I wanted to visit with Manir one last time, and besides, I owed him dinner. We met in Khobar, but first I needed to do a bit of last minute shopping. It was hysterical because everyone recognized me! First I went to the pharmacy to buy some more of my mystery item (I’ll attach a photo) and the pharmacist remembered me from the other night. Then back to the store where I had purchased my coffee pots and the guy recognized me before I was even side. Apparently my good-neighbor discount was still intact and I got the quantity discounts based upon my previous purchases. He then showed me everything that was new in the shop since I had been there last (am I their only customer?). Manir needed to pick up ... read more
