I’m starting to feel like Tina Fey on Saturday Night Live with all of my weekend updates.
I can’t believe I’ve already been here a month! Mom, only 12 more of these to go. We can do it! So, yes, this Thursday marked one month in Doha. Since this was such a momentous occasion, the company decided to celebrate by hosting a murder mystery dinner party at the Four Seasons 😉 If I haven’t mentioned this before, we were all assigned famous people from the ‘60s, and I was happy to find out I was someone I knew well and could actually pull off easily (costume wise only!): the uber elegant and classy Audrey Hepburn. I went for the obvious Holly Golightly look from Breakfast at Tiffany’s with the big sunglasses, black dress, and bejeweled updo.
There were about 80 attendees, which included the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Bruce Lee, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire, JFK, Jackie Kennedy, Groucho Marx, Lucille Ball, and the list goes on… Some of the characters were hilarious. Bruce Lee was our Italian contact from DAGOC and Elvis was, in his words, “the Spanish version of Elvis” who could
only come up with one line from an Elvis song that none of us had ever heard before (we’re pretty sure he made it up). Rod, the VP, showed us another side of him and was literally Groucho Marx incarnate. Without fail, he kept in character all night long and came up with lines that we were convinced he Googled prior to his arrival as they were perfectly delivered on cue (e.g. when I questioned him as to his whereabouts when the murder took place, without missing a beat, he said, “I was having breakfast at Tiffany’s” or when I asked him if his cigar could have been the solid, blunt object they referenced as the murder weapon, he replied “Maybe you should ask Bill Clinton” and finally, his last line of the night “I’ve had an unforgettable evening, but this wasn’t it”).
Out of all of the attendees, only two people guessed the murderer correctly (the murderer didn’t even get it!). I guess it was either that no one was as anal retentive about listening to all of the clues or as obsessed with solving brainteasers as me and Tiffany (the head of my department). So, it came
Take another little piece of my heart
We're not sure if Dana just did a really good job playing a drunk Janis Joplin or if she got into the bottle before the party even started! down to the two of us for the final prize of the evening and my inability to win any kind of prize came through once again. Tiffany walked away with a $250 gift certificate to the Four Seasons Spa. Yes, I’m still wallowing in my misery. Her husband, who happened to be the murderer (Jimi Hendrix), made the draw. Hmm, slightly suspicious 😉
Anyway, the night was a lot of fun and the food was delicious. So much so that my dress wasn’t fitting me so well by the end of the night. I thought I was going to have a repeat performance of the Kozoway/Gatti wedding in 1997 when a button on my dress literally popped off due to the Italian culinary delights I had indulged in throughout the evening.
The rest of the weekend was pretty relaxed. I took two of the newer girls (they came a whole week and two weeks after me, so they’re the rookies now!), Ilmarie and Lindsey, to Turkey Central for lunch on Friday. It is seriously the highlight of living here. It’s a total dive, but it’s heavenly. The bread, the fruit drinks, the chicken…words cannot express the deliciousness. Afterwards,
we went for a walk on the Corniche and found another great tea/desert spot right on the water that has an amazing rooftop patio with fabulous views. We stayed there during the sunset, so I included some pics from the rooftop.
What else? Oh, this week was crazy weather here. There was apparently a massive thunder/lighting storm here (I slept through it—not so shocking). It was in the middle of the night and jolted many awake, some who thought there were bombs (always a comforting feeling) and others who were perplexed as to how a desert environment can have a massive storm that floods our whole office. Oh yes, we came down in the morning to find a water soaked rug and walls. It couldn’t have anything to do with the slightly shoddy workmanship here or anything 😉 It was pretty amazing to see Doha in the rain though.
Well, my verboseness has gotten the best of me once again. Sorry for my long-windedness. Talk soon!
