On Thursday, 3.11., I arrived with the ferry in Sharjah, UAE. The entry to the country was quite easy. I got a stamp at the border with allowance of 30 days staying. In Sharjah I enjoyed my first proper supermarket since Erzurum, Turkey, maybe. And you can use the credit card again. I still have much cash left from Iran, so I didnt need a cash machine, but I was not sure at all if I still remember the PIN and wanted to try out. From two machines I tried to get about 10 Euro, but they said its too much. Aehh? I figured out that it was just too little and I remembered the right PINJ In UAE are living many different people: Arabs, Western people, Africans and many Indians. And you see skin. I ... read more

Oman is studded with lots of Unesco World Heritage Site forts, which were the result of the near constant battles that used to be fought here. What's the different between a Fort and a Palace? Well, they are both fortified, but a palace is where nobility (no-ability) sleeps, while a fort is where the grunts sleep.... read more

Muscat is sprawls out between the Gulf and the Hajar mountains. Since we arrived right after some flash flooding following unseasonably heavy rains, we had to settle for a regular car, as the 4WD we'd rented was being used by locals to get around the flood damaged areas. This put a crimp on some of our plans to get to more remote areas, but we still made the best of it.... read more

The evening before arriving in Muscat it was the final 'formal' night and once again the Captain made an appearance in the theatre with his senior officers before the show. The show was the best yet and was an array of glitter and colour. It was called ‘Spirit of the Dance'. It was a mix of Riverdance meets a satanic phantom of the opera. The beast of the moment was a pale-faced demon with curly horns that fancied himself as a bit of a Paul Daniels. The only difference was that we all liked this…a lot!!! The finale was something special. The lights dimmed and 2 of the singers stood either side of the stage and started singing ‘We are the world'. Illuminated words started to float in to the middle of the stage and began ... read more

The sun is shining. It's going to be at least 32 degrees celcius today. Got up, had breakfast…oh! I forgot, you don't want to read about that!! The ship has arrived in Salalah in Oman. Salalah is Oman's immortal second city and is the capital of the Dhofar region. Salalah means 'shining'. 'The guidebook states that the beautiful unspoilt countryside boasts, amongst other things, baobab trees. Now as most people (including myself) don't know what the hell one of these is, I can't see how you can boast about it. It could be one of those stubborn, hard to get rid of, pests of a weed for all we know!! The head of tourism for Oman probably decided to give it an exotic name so they can boast about it!!! The many historical wonders include the ... read more

We decided to try to do more on the weekends. There are so many beautiful things to see here other then the malls. Now that the weather is cooling a bit we have decided to go on adventures during the weekends. We wanted to visit other Emirates and Oman which is the country neighboring UAE. In this blog we ventured to Buraimi, Oman which Al Ain borders. I actually live right across from the border so we have finally gone across to do more than just renew our visas. We decided to visit. We also took a trip through Oman mountains to get to Hatta UAE last weekend. Hatta was a quaint village we enjoyed visiting the fort there and the heritage village. The following weekend we ventured to Musandum, Oman going through Ras Al Khaimah ... read more

It is always a pleasure to cruise into Muscat. This sultanate is one of our favorite places in all of the Middle East. The handsome Omani people are very friendly, the landscape is storybook and the souk is the best. There is a high level of education and there are even women working in government jobs. Sultan Qaboos is a pretty benevolent ruler who has the third largest private yacht in the world and some very fancy palaces in both Muscat and Salalah. The countryside is spotless and the standard of living is very high for the residents. Shortly after arrival we went over to the Muttrah Souk with Doug and Annette. The gold, fabric and trinket souks are all jammed together along the corniche fronting the harbor. Oman is noted for its frankincense and the ... read more

Dear friends, After four fantastic days on sea, we arrive this morning early in the harbour of Salalah - Oman. For us it's the second time here. Salalah is a very nice place where old and new meets each other. Perfume and incense (the real one from the incense tree, which grows only here in Salalah) are the main products for visitors. Very high quality at good prices. More information about Salalah: (thanks to Wikipedia) History Salalah History shows that it gained prominence due to the Frankincense that was extracted from the Frankincense trees that are found in this region. Frankincense is an extract from these trees that is used for perfume and incense sticks. These perfumes are used for ritualistic purpose and are hence widely popular among the practitioners of Judaism. Belonging to the Boswellia ... read more

Sunday March 27th, 2011 Strait of Hormuz, South of Iran Latitude 25 degrees 13 minutes’ north- Longitude 57 degrees 32 minutes’ east Arabia is behind us in a cloud of dust, literally. We pulled out of Dubai yesterday afternoon and visibility was only about 500 feet. Luckily the dust storm did not roll in until we were on our way out of the harbor. In the morning we were still able to see the world’s tallest building and all of skyscrapers that make up Dubai’s skyline. The day before the weather was good in Oman, just hot. The Port of Mina Qaboos in Oman was clean, organized and completely uncrowded. The sidewalks were paved in marble with statues and fountains all along the waterfront. There was a huge incense burner built for decoration on top of ... read more

Hi Everybody! On Sunday afternoon, we took a taxi to Bur Dubai, an older section of Dubai. To get over to the Old Arab Souk(shops), we had to pay about 30 cents to cross Dubai Creek in an long boat called a dhow. ( This so called creek is more like a river and is filled with saltwater.) There were many small shops with Pashimas, brass items, gold jewelry, long silk dresses, stuffed camels, t-shirts, etc. The shop keepers were very polite and not very pushy. I am amazed at how neat and clean everything is in Dubai. From the white robes of the men to floors of shops, there is not a speck of dirt anywhere. I have only seen a couple of people smoking. You can only order alcoholic beverages in a hotel bar. ... read more
