Greetings!!!! Well we finally left Luxor on an overnight 16 hour bus up the Red Sea coast, crossing the Suez canal and down the Sinai Penninsular to Sharm El Sheikh. Not exactly luxurious but hey it got us there eventually! Sharm as the locals call it is basically Las Vegas by the Red Sea - an inexplicable metropolis emerging from the surrounding desert. Although in Sharm's case once you have seen the water it is a bit more understandable why we are all there! The weather was beautiful and warm and Sharm is much less dusty than the rest of Egypt. We stayed in a cosmopolitan hotel filled with Russian mafia types with their dyed blonde girlfriends (seriously!), overweight poms and the odd kraut. We went straight into a couple of shore dives at Shark's Bay ... read more

It's been awhile since we were in Jordan but we'll do our best to fill in the details. We crossed the border from Israel into Jordan without difficulty...we had heard that it could take several hours when in fact it only took us less than 30 minutes! Our first impression of Jordan was great: the people at the border were all very friendly and seemed genuinely interested in us, and the weather was warm...ok, it was HOT! Soon, our pre-arranged taxi arrived at the border and took us up to Petra to our hotel, a 2-3 hour ride. The taxi driver was nice, although he wanted to stop a few times and try to take us to more "unknown sights" or his friend's souvenir shop that would give us a "good deal" or his other friend's ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » South » Aqaba March 29th 2008

After driving out of the desert, we could scarcely believe that we would be beach side after less than an hour on the road. Our destination was Aqaba, a town on the Red Sea, located somewhere between Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. This is where lots of Jordanian families and young people come to enjoy their holidays and weekends. It is also rapidly gaining popularity with Western visitors who come to check out the sights below water. Scuba diving and snorkelling is the big draw card with the Westerners here. I was determined not to like Aqaba but it ended up being one of my favourite destinations. On the weekends it is the strangest mix of cultures - Muslim ladies splashing about in the sea, fully covered in their hijab, men lying back in the sand ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » South » Wadi Rum March 29th 2008

Middle East » Jordan » South » Wadi Rum March 27th 2008

After a great drive out of Wadi Musa, (stopping to spend the morning at Little Petra on the way) we continued down South to Wadi Rum. Our accommodation for two nights was to be the Bait Ali Desert Camp. Despite the fact that we slept in tents, this wasn’t really ‘camping’ as most Kiwis know it. The camp is really well set up. There’s a huge round room where dinner is served and plenty of clean toilets and showers. The big bonus is a swimming pool in the desert, a guilty indulgence considering the country’s water shortages. The camp mainly caters for group bookings so unfortunately there weren’t many independent travellers about. We spent a few days checking out the beautiful desert scenery in Wadi Rum. Because we were travelling by ourselves, we didn’t organise our ... read more

Well here we are. Wadi Musa. Home to the famous ‘Lost City of Petra’ As mentioned, we found Wadi Musa to be a bit of a sad place. Compared to other parts of the country, people are pushy and not as friendly. There are two distinct parts. The lower part is where the big multinational resorts are, and the upper bit where we stayed (oh yes, we really went budget in Wadi Musa!) Tourist fatigue really seems to have set in here as the people try their hardest to get a bit of money from the thousands of tourists who make a whirlwind stop in their town before thundering off down the road to the next attraction. We have taken heaps of photos here. There are four pages of them on this blog. To see them ... read more

Hi guys! Well here we are in long awaited Jordan - we have been so busy, making the most of our 11 days in this amazing place. Our overnight flight was uneventful (thanks to those little pink pills) and we even managed to get a bit of sleep in our cramped bmi economy class seats. As promised, a taxi driver was waiting for us at the airport, holding up a sign for ‘Mr Hawkes’ After sorting our visitor visas and getting into the taxi, a strange thing happened. Our taxi driver actually charged us the pre-arranged amount! He was very kind and polite too so a big thumbs up to Jordan so far. This has to have been our most pleasant ‘airport - taxi - into town’ adventure yet. The first thing that I noticed about ... read more

Dear Friends, My stay in Jordan was only a couple of days long but it was interesting and great fun! I visited Petra at length, went to Jesus' baptism site, had a quick "swim" in the Dead Sea and will be heading to Damascus tomorrow morning. The border crossing To travel from Egypt to Jordan there are two main options - either a short trip through Israel or by boat from Nuweiba in Egypt to Jordan's only port, Aqaba. Because I want to travel to other countries in the Middle East, especially Syria, the Israeli stamp on my passport could cause me some future headaches and I decided to take the 2 hour ferry trip. After a chaotic departure I arrived in Jordan in the late afternoon and, together with 6 other foreigners (3 Japanese, 2 ... read more

Jordan was fantastic. The people are lovely, very friendly and most of them just want to speak to you without any desire to sell you useless tat. The first night was spent at the airport hotel as we arrived really late on in the evening. The next day we headed for the Dead Sea and went for a swim which was great. With the salt content at around 30% it's true what people say about bring impossible to sink - it needs to be experienced to really appreciate it. After The Dead Sea we headed for Petra for 2 nights. We hired a driver in Amman by the name of Ibrahim to get us down there as we had unknowingly missed the 6am bus for the day and there is not much by the means of ... read more
