PETRA , JORDAN - DAY 12 Some say save the best for last, and today in Petra this may be true. It’s hard to look back and say what was the best - Jerusalem was fantastic - but, if you’re a fan of antiquity and archeological phenomenon, Petra can’t be beat. Our superior tour guide, Madji, did a fantastic job of telling the story of Petra in a thorough and entertaining presentation. The 2,000 year old city of Petra, which the ancient Nabataeans carved out of colorful sandstone cliffs, has recently been named one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World” and is just amazing. Petra is one of the best preserved biblical sites in the world. We took a long walk through the narrow, high walled canyon called the Sig, and suddenly the huge ... read more

DRIVE TO PETRA - DAY 11 We left the Movenpick Resort and Spa on the Dead Sea and began the drive to the Movenpick Resort Petra. The bus stopped along the way at Mount Nebo, known as Pisgah in the Bible. On a clear day, Jericho, the Dead Sea, the Jordan River, Jerusalem and Amman can be seen. Construction prevented us from entering the Memorial Church of Moses, but we were able to see some of the 6th century mosaics, remarkably well preserved considering the age. There was a small museum and a great view from the mountain. This is where tradition has identified as the place Moses died and was buried, but it has been a site of pilgrimages for centuries. Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths all recognize Moses as a prophet, so many visitors ... read more

October 8th, 2013 After a couple of days of getting oriented in Amman it was time to head out and start exploring the rest of the country, first stop Petra...As mentioned this has been a must-see for K and I was really looking forward to it...so we hopped an early bus and arrived in Wadi Musa (the town where Petra is) and made our way to the hotel, the 7 Wonders hotel in the town centre (hotels nearer the entrance to Petra are fancier and more expensive). We were greeted by the manager Abdullah, and had a great chat with him while we waited for our room to be ready...as we were about to set off for the day to explore Petra, Abdul asked us if we had any plans that night, and as we had ... read more

Diving in the spectacular Red Sea, Safari driving with minors, absorbing the enchanting Petra and floating in the Dead Sea After a long Easter Sunday bus day, where the best we could do for Easter Eggs were Kinder Surprises, we were refreshed and ready for our jam packed day of adventure. Very excited but a little nervous about our intro dive, we got saddled up into our wetsuits, weight belts and tanks before trotting down to the light house area in Dahab of the Red Sea. We learnt the very basics on how to get water out of our masks and mouth pieces and the all important hand signals. For our short intro dive, our guide was going to manage the pressures for us which was quite reassuring. Surprisingly, only after a few minutes, both Amy ... read more

The first day of our "Gateways to Antiquities" cruise happened to be one of the most interesting days of the entire vacation! We left the port of Safaga, Egypt the night before and we docked in Aqaba, Jordan early in the morning. After breakfast, we leisurely got onto buses for a scenic drive up to Petra (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The port of Aqaba was interesting as the country of Jordan was to the northeast, the country of Saudi Arabia was due east, the country of Israel with it's tiny resort town of Elat was to the Northwest, and the country of Egypt, (The Sinai Peninsula) was due west. We could see them all at the same time cruising into port. Nothing had prepared us for this amazing place of Petra! We had seen pictures ... read more

My main reason for visiting Jordan - other than living out my “Lawrence of Arabia” fantasy – was to visit Petra. Petra is an incredible Nabatean city carved out of the cliffs, dating back to the first century BCE. There are still Bedouin who live in the caves of Petra, making this a city that has been inhabited for at least 2,500 years. To that end, I had arranged with my hotel to hire a taxi for the day to take me the 128 kilometers from Aqaba to Petra. The hotel manager assured me that this was a driver he trusted; the driver would wait for me while I explored Petra and drive me back. The fee was JD85 (about US $120) which was steep, but it was certain, unlike the buses. My driver, Naef, spoke ... read more

J: Jordan is an island of stability in an otherwise fairly hostile part of the world. It is bordered by Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Palestinian occupied West Bank, yet we found Jordan to be a friendly and open country, and we soon lost count of the number of locals saying 'Welcome to Jordan!' We arrived in Amman and spent our first day visiting the famous sights. The most celebrated of all, the Roman Theatre is an amphitheatre built on the side of a valley in Jesus' time. It was closed when we went but we could see the whole grand structure from outside anyway. Next we made our way up to the Citadel but with the light fading and Holly's broken toe aching we turned around before we got there. We had heard ... read more

As we were warned the weather wasn't very promising this morning. Undeterred we put our thermals on again and layered up our clothing AND we put our waterproof over pants on. We look ridiculous, but we will be warm and dry whatever happens with the weather! We met Ahmad in the foyer just before nine and we walked down to the Petra ticket office in the drizzle. It only costs five Dinars more for a two day ticket so we asked Ahmad to purchase the two day tickets in case we want to re-visit tomorrow morning before we leave. With very few other tourists about we entered the site. Just before the entrance to the siq Ahmad asked if we needed the facilities, warning that it would be a long way to the next opportunity. The dogs went off just before 7.30am this morning. Obviously Ahmad exaggerated when he told us that we would be woken at 5.30am when all the dogs start running around playing and barking. I guess the dogs are on winter time too?? Absolutely too cold to think about using the basic showering facilities (didn't even check to see if there is hot water, but I think not) so we made do with a bit of a wash at the hand basin. If you get hat hair from wearing a hat and bed hair from sleeping what do you get when you wear a hat to bed?? A really bad hair day!! Thank goodness I'm not trying to impress anyone with my personal grooming. We had a quick bit of breakfast and then we headed off on ... read more
