In my last days in Israel I decided to visit my friend in Ramallah - and against all the warnings of my israeli friends I had a quite positive impression of this city.... read more

On to Ein Gedi and the Dead Sea and Desert... We realized that it'd be much easier to rent a car for 3 days and return it in Eliat than to take a tour to Ein Gedi and taxi to Eliat. A rental car is the way to go in Israel. Flexibility is so nice and the tours are pretty rigid. We drove down to the Dead Sea thinking that we might camp on the beach there because lodging seemed booked. When we got there (it was HOT) we tried once more at the field school and they had many rooms available. The rooms weren't much to speak of but the grounds were great. It is more of a mini nature preserve than a lodging facility. There were Ibex (small dear with long curved, ridged antlers) ... read more

On to Jerusalem from Tiberius.... After leaving Tiberius we drove through some more beautiful country on our way to Jerusalem. Driving into Jerusalem trying to find our Avis drop off outside the Old City I came to understand why they say don't drive in Jerusalem. At one point I was beginning to feel save in the middle lane but realized the middle lane turned left while the left lane went straight. Just when we lost track of signs directing us to the Old City and figured we were going to end up driving all over town, we saw the Old City walls and right in front of us was AVIS car rental! Wow, what a relief. There was even a gas station right across the street to fill up the tank. We walked across the street ... read more

Although our time in Israel has come and now gone (by about 4 weeks) we haven't had a good chance to post any comments on that part of the trip until now. It was quite an experience and so should still be fresh on our minds. We arrived in Tel Aviv on Saturday a day later than expected (since we missed our flight out of Athens the day before). I knew that most things shut down on the Sabbath but didn't realize that their Sabbath was on Saturday. There were no buses, shuttles, etc to get us to Tiberius, our first place to stay. We were getting quite concerned and thought we might have to take a cab at an exorbitant price. Everything I read said driving in Israel was horrendous. We decided to just rent ... read more

We rented a car last weekend and toured a bit in the north, returning to Haifa each evening. On Saturday we visited Goren Park in the northern Galilee. Lots of wildflowers. We took a short hike to the ruins of a crusader fortress, Montfort. The location of the fortress puzzled me. I would expect it to be built on the ridgetop, with a good view of the surrounding countryside and where it would be easy to defend. Instead it’s situated half way down the hillside. Sunday we visited two sites in the Golan: Nimrod’s fortress and Gamla. Nimrod’s fortress was built by the Muslims in the 13th century to defend Damascus against the crusaders. It is the best preserved castle in Israel, and is in better shape that the pictures here indicate. Situated on a ridge ... read more

Sebastia ... read more

... read more

Alright...I have a very quick gripe. Today in my mailbox I recieved a piece of mail from my old bank in the United States and upon looking very closely, it is addressed to Jessica N Edwaid" What the hell is that?? Just because I live in the Middle East, I have to have an Arab sounding name? My name is Edwards, that is a very English sounding name...nowhere even close to Edwaid!?! Not cool PNC Bank.
