Shabbat Shalom! I have heard quite a hand full of talk about the Carmel Market here in Tel Aviv, and I finally put it to the test today and went out on an adventure to find it. At first I was ready to take the bus--why? Because I had heard from a hand full of people that it was not walking distance. I spent some time waiting at the bus stop this afternoon...waiting, waiting, and waiting. It was raining a little bit so I took this into consideration and thought that is why the bus was late. Eventually, I took it upon myself to ask one more person where the Carmel Market was...they said it was just a ten minute walk away. I was shocked to hear this answer. It really does matter who you ask ... read more

Betaavon! This means “good eats” or something similar to that in Hebrew. I say this because I am sitting in my “go to” coffee shop on Dizengoff enjoying some coffee and cookies. I also have heard this phrase many times from the locals in Tel Aviv, or even on a bus on the way back from a volunteer day when I am eating raw broccoli out of my back pack. True story..this happened to me last night, a local bus rider looked at me and said “Brocoli for dinner, lady? You are what you eat. Betaavon.” I replied “Todah Rabah!” Thanks , locals. I was speaking to another local at the bus stop in Shoham (this is the city where I volunteer in) and explaining to him about my time here in Israel, what I’m doing, ... read more

Today was another beach bum day....I think this tallies as number 4 for the beach days thus far in Tel Aviv. I met some more new friends today...l'chaim (to life) to that! My French friend (Remember Davy?) Introduced me to his Russian friend, Margarita (her name is no joke my friends. Margartia from Moscow, Russia.) In addition, Margarita has a friend visiting her right now, Nikita. I call them my -ita Russian friends. We spent nearly 3 hours on the beach, and it was quite windy today. I was told today may be one of the last sunny days in Tel Aviv but I sure hope that is a wrong telling....I'm around non-traditional English speakers quite a bit, and I'm starting to enjoy it more and more every time I am surrounded by them. I find ... read more

Happy Monday back home my lovely family and friends! I sit here on this beautiful Monday afternoon in Tel Aviv, with the view of the Meditteranen Sea and my iced coffee in hand. Excuse me, it is not iced coffee, this Café Mersand informed me there were out of iced coffee but can make me cold espresso with milk and ice....so it's quite similar. Tastes just as satisfying if you ask me :) Since I have last blogged I have begun my volunteering. Here's the update on my volunteering; I have "Resigned" from my volunteer site at the Kadimah Youth Center because I spoke with this about a hand full of my Israeli friends, and they warned me this is an unsafe neighborhood and that I should not go there, especially by myself as a young ... read more

Happy Saturday and Shabbat Shalom. Shabbat in Israel is ofcourse much different than a Shabbat I am used to back home. Here in Israel, things stop, stores shut down, and of course, if you are in Jerusalem it is a whole different story...the city truly is at rest. I spent my Shabbat evening with Reuven's family. They live in Rehovot, a 20 minute train ride from Tel Aviv. I'm glad to say I feel more comfortable riding the Israeli train system over the New York subway system...I never quite learned that New York subway system but for some reason a train system in a different language strikes me as easier to understand! I met Reuven's whole family and girlfriend! I was very happy to spend the night eating a delicious home cooked meal instead of the ... read more

Wirklich schade, wo sie doch ... read more

SARASOTA, FL TO TEL AVIV, ISRAEL Started from Sarasota, Fl at 11:30 am and arrived in Tel Aviv at 2:30 pm the next day. Accounting for the seven time zones that took 20 hours with the last leg from JFK in New York on a 747 being over 10 hours alone. All the flights were good and smooth except for a short duration of bumpiness over the Atlantic Ocean. On the 747, there was some commotion among the passengers when boarding, but everything calmed down after we started taxiing and it was a pleasant journey thereafter. The meals were adequate and the service efficient. I watched the movie “42” about Jackie Robinson and listened to music most of the flight. I napped little, however, so when I arrived at my hotel, The David Intercontinental in Tel ... read more

Happy Wednesday everyone :) Lastnights adventures truly were a cultural experience, a Hebrew salsa dancing lesson. My friend Reuven is a salsa instructor here in Israel, so he took me out for a night of salsa lessons/dancing! We went to a salsa club in Tel Aviv, not far from Dizengoff (my street). I went with Reuven and a friend of his, who is one of his salsa students. The salsa lessons were divided into different sections (from beginning to advanced). I ofcourse, and Reuven agreed, that I start at beginners. Reuven told the instructor "English please!" at the beginning of the salsa lesson but this did not last through out the whole lesson. Gratefully, I had Reuven translating for me some of the lesson, but this did not make me an advanced salsa dancer! Despite the ... read more

Shalom friends and family back home! So since I am a "free bird" for the remainder of the week, I have found myself being able to sleep in, wake up to eat a brunch, and than figure out my plans for the remainder of the day. I like to classify myself as a "free spirited" type of person when I am back home, and many of you might agree with that. So this "free bird" lifestyle is easily likeable for the time being....sababa. I sit here in my apartment, with the windows and doors wide open letting in the fresh air as I write this blog entry. It's beautiful, I must enjoy every moment here :) Is it snowing in Minnesota yet ;) SOO last night Reuven picked me up and we headed to Yaffo (Jaffa ... read more

Well today, or should I say this afternoon, was my first full experience of Tel Aviv, solo! I say this afternoon because I let the morning slip away in my slumber. So it turns out that the jet lag did get the best of me. I should have known I was going to sleep through the morning because I could not fall asleep until past 3 AM. So my day started at 1 when I woke up to loud music outside of my apartment, at first I was upset that I was awoken so early and than I realized it was past 1 PM, so I thanked that loud car that drove by :) I grabbed a bite to eat for breakfast in the apartment, which was cottage and cereal. While eating breakfast on my outside ... read more
