This morning got off to a frustrating start. By the time we found our way to the car rental and made our peace with our sat nav system, it was almost lunchtime. Thankfully the gas station on Route 1 served the best gas station food I've ever tried. With schnitzel sandwiches and sugar-free energy drinks to fuel us, we made our way north on Route 90. This stretch of highway runs parallel to the Jordan river. We felt popping in our ears as we approached it. We finally figured out that it was because we were driving below sea level as that was the beginning of the Dead Sea area. Along our route were markers indicating our depth. It was a very scenic, desert looking region. The desert scenery became greener and more lush as we ... read more

Howdy folks. I want to first off apologize for this blog that you are about to read. The first three posts were written by a smart, english major-yours truly Blake. But, I’m sorry to inform you that this blog is written by me, a business major who scored questionably on the reading comprehension and english portions of the ACT-DJ. So sit back, grab some popcorn, and enjoy this below average insert. Today, Blake and I made the voyage from our Kibbutz in Huqoq to the city of Nazareth with the group from Bethsaida. When we pulled into the city of Nazareth, we were taken back by the physical landscape that this city was built on, such huge hills! The vans dropped us off close to our first destination- The Santuario Di Nazareth. This Roman Catholic church ... read more

Yesterday we drove from Tiberius through the Galilee region, passing the city of Cana, to the hometown of Jesus, Nazareth. We then drove through the Jezreel Valley to the massive tell of Megiddo (Armageddon). After a visit to the ruins of this important city, we stopped at Beth Shan on the way to the Jordan River Valley. Tomorrow Jerusalem!... read more

"You will never read your Bible with more complete understanding than when you touch the waters of Galilee" Our first day in Israel we docked in Haifa. It is a huge port and is the third largest city in Israel. It lies on the Western slope of Mount Carmel and descends into the Mediterranean. Near our ship there were cranes offloading container ships everywhere we looked. We began our day with a drive to the Sea of Galilee (Galilee means circle). It was here that Jesus met Simon Peter, James and John...his first disciples. He performed many miracles here: He stilled the raging storm on the Sea of Galilee that was about to swamp their boat, He walked on the stormy water to his disciples, he preached the Sermon on the Mount, and performed the miracle ... read more

After the bus ride from Acre, we had to rush to Nazareth. When we got to Nazareth, the Church of the Annunciation, where Mary and Joseph had lived, had actually been closed for the day already. Fortunately for us, Shimon, our tourguide, knew the guard and he let us in through the exit. Personally, I have no words for the Church of the Annunciation, all I could do when I was there was sit on one the church benches and bow my head and pray. It's hard to describe everything. They say a picture paints a thousand words, I'll have a few pictures up, that should satisfy for a few thousand words ;)). Till next time! Conor :))... read more

Today was supposed to start with a nice run along the roadside as the sun rose over Galilee. So, after taking full advantage of the snooze feature on the alarm, I rose just in time for breakfast. So it goes. We started the day off with a nice, leisurely boat ride across to the other side of the lake. I say leisurely, in that at one point a large white bird flew parallel to our boat...and soundly beat us to shore. But it was well worth the time together as a group, and once we arrived at the other side we got to examine a preserved wooden boat which was discovered along the shore line. This boat has been dated to the time of Christ, the 1st century AD. We then hit up Nazareth, a church ... read more

Wednesday March 2, 2011 We are making this final blog entry. We got busy at the front of the trip and were not able to blog the first day. Roy Wolf picked us up promptly at 6:00 AM and gave us a ride to the airport. We made our plane with plenty of time to spare. We only six people on our flight to Newark. We arrived in Newark around noon and had lunch at our gate. Around 2:00 PM we met our group from Ft. Worth. We made our introductions and prepared for out 10-1/2 flight to Israel. We boarded right on time and left with a full plane. The flight was a bit bumpy but got a chance to sleep a little and watched Social Network for my movie selection and Sherry watched Secretariat. ... read more

Later on our tour, we came to a famous church for Mary where (in the bible) she found out she was pregnant. It is the biggest church in the Middle East and in my opinion the most beautiful. The architecture was stunning. The inside was dark (like a castle) but the stained glass glowed - almost haunting like. You could hear the low voices of the chorus singing as you went through. We stopped at a hotel for the night. It was dedicated to a Jewish business woman who lived during the Renaissance. Her name was really long and I could not remember it. (Dona Gracia my mom just told me.) The people there told us about her and then made us dress up like people in that time period. Most of the good clothes ... read more

Another great breakfast and goodbye to our hotel on the Sea of Galilee. We started early today because it is the Sabbath (sundown on Friday through sundown on Saturday) for the Jewish culture and various places will close early. We will be spending the rest of our tour at the Olive Tree Hotel in Jerusalem. Our first stop today was the ancient ruins of Beit She’an which is one of the most ancient places in Israel. Philistines and Canaanites ruled it and the Hellenists called it Skitopolis. In the Roman period it was the largest city in the regional alliance known as the Decapolis. The book of Sameul reports that after Saul and his sons were killed on Mount Gilboa their bodies were fastened to the walls of Beit She’an. An earthquake destroyed the city and ... read more

Nazareth!! I'm in Nazareth and for some reason that brings a smile to my lips. What a great town! The Fauzi Azar Inn that I am staying at is partly the reason I am sure . It is a 200+year old mansion that had been empty for 20 some years until a business man from Tel Aviv and the granddaughter of Fauzi Azar , an Arab Christian , joined forces in 2005 to create a guest house .They refurbished , added plumbing and additional electrical work and opened then with 3 -5 bed rooms and a kitchen . They are now up to 11 rooms including a 10 bed dorm . The cliental is international and the 2 Arab cab drivers I have used could not understand WHY I or anyone would want to stay in ... read more
