Shalom Israel and Palestine - Piprey on wheels Israel/Palestine is one of the most politically unstable regions of the world where the Jews and Muslims are still annoying each other despite standing together in the 21st century. The rife started centuries earlier with the tribes of Cannan, Philistines, Samarians etc living in the Judah and Israel region. David unified the northern kingdom of Israel and southern kingdom of Judah after capturing it from the Jebusites, local inhabitants to establish his capital. Actually, most of the buildings in the old city of Jerusalem were built by Herod, who was a prolific builder. There were the Ottomans (Walls of the old city) and Habsburg empire (Churches) among others. Jerusalem is an old vibrant city where religious identity is expressed strongly by most individuals. The values of peace, harmony ... read more

The best part of my job while working on a cruise ship is, that once in a while I get to escort guest tours. Since I started cruising again last December I have been able to add a few new countries to my travel list. Yesterday I had the chance to visit the city of Jerusalem, a place that was not really on my list, but I was really excited to see the city. From Ashdod were our ship docked it was a 2 hour drive to the city of Jerusalem. The tour itself would take about 10 hours. We covered so much much during this day and a lot of walking was involved. We had 33 guest on board of the bus and while our tour guide was leading the tour I was staying in ... read more

A large number of Persian Jews who came to Jerusalem at the end of the 19th century arrived in vain, and the lowliness of their situation led to an attempt to expel them from the country. The writer of the newspaper "Havatzelet" 12 Shevet 1894: "A spectacle of terror we saw on Wednesday of this week in our city, a play that irritates the heart and soul. Many of our brothers, the children of Israel, residents of Persia, came this month to seize our city, to escape it from the heavy exile that rests on our people in the cities of Persia. The public will love them, and the alms that were collected from us - the residents of Jerusalem, revived their lives. Suddenly a decree was issued against them by the exalted government to leave ... read more

There are many cities in the world, big and small, noisy and quiet, for business and leisure, but there is not a single city in the world that looks like Jerusalem. Jerusalem is the cradle of three religions – Jewish, Christian and Muslim. Its atmosphere is saturated with the rich and ancient history of the universe and the birth of humanity. Only in Jerusalem can you feel the power of history and the vulnerability of man to time. In this city, you can see how the ancient past and the turbulent present touch. "Jerusalem, you are a city built to unite all» This is what king David called the capital of the Jewish people and their state in Psalm 122. What makes Jerusalem so special in our eyes?Bible researchers have counted 70 names of Jerusalem: The ... read more

Following breakfast, we boarded the bus, but for some reason there were no wake up calls so several people were late. It was rainy and cold. Our agenda today was to get to the Dome of the Rock. This is the huge gold dome that you see in just about any picture of Jerusalem. The dome is under Muslim control and they can and do close it often, so it is tricky getting to go there. This is my fourth trip to Israel and I have only been there one time until today. Today we were successful!! The Dome of the Rock is considered a most holy site by Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike. It is the third most holy site to Muslims following Mecca and Medina. It is built on Mt. Moriah, the site where ... read more

Sain nukuttua hyvin: klo 21 - 6.

We celebrated our final Eucharist as a 36 member pilgrim group today. 1/3 from Holy Nativity Church, Florida, 1/2 from Diocese of Delaware, and the Shimers and Coerpers affiliated with St. James' Skaneateles, NY. We are at a Convent overlooking the valley beyond Jerusalem at a suggested site of the Emmaus story, where Jesus, after his crucifixion, reveals himself to Cleophas. The Dean of St. George's College, our host, preached on our pilgrim journey in life. Though this pilgrimage has just ended, we are encouraged to continue the journey and walk with Jesus, as He is always waiting for us to do. Where is He leading us? What is He calling us to do and be? In who will we see Jesus? Where will He be revealed to us next? I am reminded of verse 2 ... read more

We walked the ancient and original Way of the Cross with prayers and Scripture readings at each of 14 stations today through the streets of Jerusalem, ending at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre situated on the stone of Golgotha where the 3 crosses are believed to have been and next and including the tomb where we think Jesus was laid. Whoa!!!! Pilgrims have been coming to this site since the 4th century and still today - we had to wait in line with hundreds of other pilgrims over an hour to see the tomb in which Jesus body was laid... An Orthodox Church from America sang chants while they were in line. We read the Passion reading on the rock of the crosses. And then the Holy Saturday reading for the Easter Vigil outside the ... read more

Today we enacted Jesus Triumphal entry into Jerusalem, starting at the Mt of Olives in Bethphage where He was with his disciples before asking for a donkey to ride into the city gates which we could see 1/2 mile across the Kidron Valley. The first church we went in has the altar sitting atop the suggested rock from which Jesus got onto the donkey. Then we walked as pilgrims down the mountain. Then we stopped in the "The Church of Tears", named for Jesus weeping as He knows what is coming. Then passed the oldest Jewish cemetery in the world, on our way to the Garden of Gethsemanee, where olive trees over 1000 years old still reside and bear olives! The rock where we suppose Jesus went to pray in the garden with his disciples (a ... read more

"Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem" - words i would encourage us all to pray regularly. Jerusalem is an amazingly holy city. Muslims, Jews, and Christians inhabit this place side by side. You hear the Muslim call to prayer on loudspeakers sometimes 5 times a day. You hear the Jewish call for sabbath to begin on Friday evening, You hear church church bells announcing Mass several times throughout the day. No competition - simply witness. And I must say devout Jews and devout Muslims humble me and my faith. They both wear their faith way more visibly than I do. This picture of Jewish men at the Western Wall of the Temple Mount saying prayers is a great example. The women were in the same place on the other side of a simple fence. On the ... read more
