AKKO AND DRIVE TO JERUSALEM - DAY5 NOTE: I CAN'T UPLOAD PHOTOS - TRYING TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE - I'LL PUBLISH THE PHOTOS LATER WHEN I GET THE PROBLEM WORKED OUT. SORRY! I awoke this morning and saw a cruise ship come into port. I found out two were coming to Haifa today and 50 bus loads of visitors were going to Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee today. I’m glad we went yesterday! The ride to Akko was short and easy but the traffic coming into Haifa was seriously backed up at the start of the work day. Akko is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world dating back to the era of the Egyptian pharaoh Thutmose. Our first stop was a visit to the Jezzar Pasha Mosque. An excellent example of ... read more

Akko is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world dating back to the era of the Egyptian pharaoh Thutmose. Our first stop was a visit to the Jezzar Pasha Mosque. An excellent example of Ottoman architecture, the mosque is named for Ahmed al-Jezzar Pasha, who defeated Napoleon at the 1799 French siege of Akko. We then took a walking ... read more

Today was my first full day in Israel, a country I have never been to before. I woke up early and heard birds singing in the trees outside my window. I walked to the train station and used the limited number of English signs to figure out how to buy myself a ticket to the port city of Akko (also known as Acre). I spent the day walking around the old part of town. There is a large complex of rooms from an old Crusader citadel that has been excavated in recent years. It was interesting to me to walk in the footsteps of Richard Lionhearted, among others. I also enjoyed wandering the back streets of Akko and observing all the exotic food and spices for sale. It is hot here, but fortunately not as hot ... read more

May 10, 2012 Haifa/Jerusalem Haifa is a beautiful little city built on a small peninsula in northern Israel. It has a busy port and is known for the large number of high tech/computer companies doing business here. One of the first things I noticed was a small passenger ship tied up next to the military side of the port. I recognized it as a Turkish vessel that was in the news recently when it was attacked by the Israeli navy when it attempted to break the blockade of Gaza to the south though no one has pointed this out. I was soon to find out that there are many things in Israel that are not talked or scrupulously ignored even when in plain sight. Today we took a long bus ride to visit Jerusalem. We stopped ... read more

Four months ago, I donated practically everything I owned to charity. What remained of my worldly possessions hardly filled half of a 70L backpack. I looked at the measly pile of clothes and toiletries and thought, “Is this really all I’ll need for the next few years?” Now, I see that it’s more than I need. I don’t need anything. For four months, I’ve carried my entire life on my back – and it’s gotten heavy. It’s slowed me down and held me back. Stuff has that tendency. After a month in Israel, I’d hardly seen anything. I didn’t want the hassle of moving things. So, I left it all behind. I grabbed my camera, a pen and paper, my magic scarf, a few clean pairs of underwear and socks, and stood by the side of ... read more
