Middle East » Cyprus February 16th 2019

I needed it very much, and could not go too far or for too long. Besides the weather must be comfortable and not to cold. So we decided to take a very short flight to Cyprus. Forty minutes and we are landing. Or not? Water all around and no sign of land and our plane is going down lower ad lower. At the very last seconds before landed I was relieved to see a piece of land. Because our time was short and we wanted to see the best, I booked a tour guide who went with us. It was a remarkable holiday with lots of history, great food and beautiful scenary. So we saw the castle of St Hillarion, the Kyrenia fortress, The Gothic Abbey of Bellapais and Famagusta ghost city, and next day all ... read more

Middle East » Cyprus » Larnaca November 6th 2018

We had now come to the last couple of days of the trip, a trip that had seen us so far sample three very different environments; the strange atmosphere of the divided city of Nicosia; a slice of Turkey in Northern Cyprus; and then the unique, energetic and intriguing liberal Arabic vibe of Beirut. Now we were back in Cyprus and we were going to explore what the Greeks and British have left behind in the Republic Of Cyprus. It had been a long day being carted across the Lebanese countryside and at the end of it, we now we were on our flight back over to Larnaca where we arrived around midnight. We had still to arrange a rental car however so we still had to keep going a bit longer before we could ge ... read more

Now, I've visited a couple of disputed territories, with some being much stranger than others. There is always something intriguing about them though, which is why Scott and I thought we'd check out what it's like in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. We'd already seen the Turkish half of Nicosia, so we had some idea of what it's like; but we thought we'd venture into the territory a bit further to check out a couple of supposed coastal gems - Kyrenia and Famagusta. I don't quite know what I was expecting but the outskirts of North Nicosia are actually quite nice. They definitely aren’t poor. We got a decent look at them as our colectivo made its way towards Kyrenia. In look... read more

It has been five months since I last wrote, which naturally and obviously, was the last time I travelled. Back then, I took a sneaky trip to Leipzigbefore starting my new job – five months later, it was time to get away for my first holiday since starting work again; the first time I have worked for almost three-and-a-half years. The holiday was well and truly deserved. About a month after I had started, I was put on a big project and the long hours, combined with the stress of delivering the project on-time and performing my job to high enough a level to pass my probation period, left me absolutely exhausted. This was on top of getting used to working life again, remembering how to do my job, settling into a new city, establishing new ... read more

Saturday 11th November 2017 A bit of a lie in for us all this morning with none of us really stirring until just before 8am. It was Kilroy of course who decided that it was time to get up so he came upstairs looking for us, determined to get us moving. Little does he know that yesterday we received his airwaybill number and some final bits of information from KAR prior to him travelling on Tuesday, so it’s really happening. Kim from KAR has confirmed all arrangements and also let us know that she will be transporting Kilroy to Ercan airport on the day. Just his last worming to be done on Monday morning and a long walk Tuesday morning followed by a “light”breakfast as advised by KAR. Make the most of the warm weather over ... read more

Saturday 4th November 2017 So here we are on the real countdown now with just 10 more days to go before we all head home to the U.K. We will of course miss our little place, the weather and our adventures out here but will look forward to returning in 2018. Not booked our return as yet as we will see how our build project progresses and also we have the more important new arrival to look forward to........ exciting times ahead. 😀. A nice start to the day with a clear blue sky, a few white clouds and the sun has returned. For how long we don’t know as the local forecast does predict rain for today and also tomorrow. Cup of tea in bed to get us going and then followed the normal routine ... read more

Middle East » Cyprus » Kyrenia » Çatalköy October 28th 2017

Saturday 28th October 2017 Awake earlier this morning as we wanted to take dogs on a longer walk now the weather was cooler. So it was a quick cup of tea and off we set along the tracks, past the goat farm and into the hills. Weather was clear blue sky, just a few clouds around. Rain was forecast again for later so it could be an afternoon of hunkering down with the tv and a good book. All was going so well with dogs enjoying themselves then disaster happened. Despite being on leads, Kilroy was snuffling in the undergrowth and managed to eat something.....not sure what but within about 10mins it was clear something was wrong. His back legs started twitching, then he went all wobbly, stumbling when walking and foaming at the mouth. 😦 ... read more

Saturday 21st October 2017 After dog walk it was breakfast and then we headed off into town to do a couple of jobs. First stop was the vets to hand across a urine sample from Kilroy.......it was three weeks ago that he had a urine infection which with antibiotics has cleared up. Vet had advised us to finish the antibiotics and then pop down with a urine sample so he could see if things look better. Well to us the “sample” looked much better. However; exercise will need to be repeated as vet was not in his surgery......will go down again Monday. Then to money exchange shop, onwards to the library to return a load of books....John managed to resist picking up another handful only coming away with one book as it’s unlikely he will have ... read more

Middle East » Cyprus » Kyrenia » Çatalköy October 14th 2017

Saturday 14th October 2017 John was awake just after 6am so decided to get up and take Kilroy for his walk, letting Sarah have a sleep in. Still dark as we set off down the hill, wiggling along the roads with no one else around. Sunrise at just after 6:40am and back home by 7:15am. Sarah surfaced shortly after we got home, cups of tea for humans and breakfast for Kilroy. Then John decided to look at our downstairs toilet as it was permanently running water......investigation showed that innards were all encrusted with crud and also the cistern lid had a slight crack in it. Remove cistern and head off to find a toilet shop! First diy place didn't have any, then Sarah remembered a big ceramics yard on the edge of town so we called ... read more

Middle East » Cyprus » Kyrenia » Çatalköy October 7th 2017

Saturday 7th October 2017 Our visitors have returned to the UK and we now return to normal with our usual early start as we walk the dogs in the hills. A lovely morning, perfect walking weather, blue sky, sunshine and a cool breeze. Very soon we will be able to head off into the hills in the jeep, park up and enjoy longer walks. Back home by 8am, Kilroy had his weekly scrub up and then time for a light breakfast. Our Turkish Cypriot neighbours were here last night and up early this morning watering gardens etc, plus picking the ripe figs off a large tree in the communal garden. They have a few small fruit trees and herbs in their garden and they passed across a couple of guava fruits for us to try.....Sarah is ... read more
