What's with Cyprus and all the cats? One thing I noticed in Cyprus was that there are a lot of cats everywhere. I noticed it already the first day when I arrived in Larnaca. As soon as I got off the airport bus I saw cats basking in the sun. It was not only in Larnaca there were lots of cats. No matter where I went in Cyprus, such as in Agios Neophytos Monastery, there were often a cat or two hanging around. I have no explanation why there are lots of cats in Cyprus, I can only point out that there are. By the way, further down there is a story about another monastery where there are cats. Don't miss that one. It's the highlight of this blog entry. In the previous blog entry I ... read more

The panorama is part of the view from the house. In the evening the sun looks as though it is rolling down the end of the Akamas Peninsular to set in the sea. I am back in Polis with Barry & Carolyn, having returned from Gazimagusa (Famagusta) back to Nicosia where I spent 3 nights which gave me the chance to walk around Nicosia (Lefkosia) old town ( in the Republic of Cyprus) and North Nicosia (Lefkosa) across the buffer zone in the Turkish part. My hotel was very comfortable and conveniently located just off the side of Ledra Street which is the main pedestrian shopping precinct that leads up to the checkpoint. So in 5 minutes I could cross the border. It was called Royiatiko which I thought was a strange, non-Greek sounding name. I ... read more

Sorry about the technical difficulties with the last blog. I panicked when I realised that I was seeing & doing so much that the blog would go on forever and I would never get to the end so I decided to split it and post one straight away. Hence the chaos! I intend to stay calm and try harder this time, let’s see if that happens. The first 3 pictures are of Kakapetria in the Troodos region which should have been in the last blog. I called the last blog Complex and Surprising Cyprus. Complex because of the history, ancient and modern which has resulted in a divided island and surprising because although small it has a mix of areas ranging from traditional villages, towns, tourist resorts, cities, forests, mountains, gorges, beaches, and ‘alpine’ type villages ... read more

It has been five months since I last wrote, which naturally and obviously, was the last time I travelled. Back then, I took a sneaky trip to Leipzigbefore starting my new job – five months later, it was time to get away for my first holiday since starting work again; the first time I have worked for almost three-and-a-half years. The holiday was well and truly deserved. About a month after I had started, I was put on a big project and the long hours, combined with the stress of delivering the project on-time and performing my job to high enough a level to pass my probation period, left me absolutely exhausted. This was on top of getting used to working life again, remembering how to do my job, settling into a new city, establishing new ... read more

Today's I want to tell you about the village, where the houses are older than some countries. FIkardou is a small beautiful village located about 40 km southwest of Nicosia (Cyprus). Kalo Chorio and Lazanias are two traditional villages located in the neighborhood. FIkardou was declared an ancient monument and carefully restored to preserve the 18th century houses with their remarkable woodwork. My very first impression ofFikardou was that feeling of calmness, peace, tranquility this village creates. There were untold stories behind those old locked doors of abandoned houses. Beautiful flowers, breathtaking views of blossoming almond trees and the untroubled surroundings made you want to stay there forever. It is believed that the name of the village was originated from the greek "figa andron" (den of fugitives) from the fugitives who were recruited by two main ... read more

Day 167 Sunday 3rd July 2016 – Pafos to Nicosia Up at a decent time to catch our 9.30am bus to Nicosia, had a quick breakfast and a very easy pack now we have sent a lot stuff home. Got down to reception at 8.30am to find the doors closed and no sign of anyone even though the opening time is 7.00am – OH NO! We rang the bell a few times, then I found some cleaning staff who located the man from the office. He checked us out and then offered us a lift to the bus station which was fantastic and saved us the hassle of a taxi. The bus was there waiting so we asked the driver if it was OK to put the backpacks in the cargo bay and he ... read more

July 14, 2015 – Today I got up around 7am and started to get ready for the day. I had to repack and have breakfast, and then I walked back to the beach, where I could get the intercity bus to Nicosia, the capital. The bus left at 9am and I arrived around 8:40. The bus takes 45 minutes in theory, but with traffic, we arrived sometime around 10:20. I took a city bus towards the apartment I rented, and then had to look a bit for the right street. The woman showed me the studio – it is quite small, but had everything I needed. And by everything, I mean air conditioning. Nicosia is not on the coast, and is even hotter, at 100 degrees. The a/c will help a lot. Here, it also takes ... read more

Sara and I have recently opened Aperanti Agrotourism in August 2013, an agrotourism accomodation in Cyprus in a renovated traditional stone-built house located in the picturesque village of Pera Orinis, a 15-minute drive from the Machairas mountains and a 20-minute drive from the capital Nicosia. The name Aperanti is a play on words that combines the greek word Peran ("beyond") and the philosophical word Aperantos ("infinite"), reflecting our wish to offer our guests a memorable experience that goes 'beyond' the typical holiday in Cyprus of sun & sea. By staying at Aperanti you will have the possibility not only to relax and to explore our beautiful countryside, but to "Live the Agrotourism" in Cyprus by tasting our home-made products (cheese, jams, cakes, pastries,...) and to participate in local activities (traditional h... read more
