Bahrain Out of all my travelblog entries the Bahraini experience is so far my only business trip, therefore it couldn’t be as fun and enjoyable as my holidays’ travelling. Nevertheless I feel impelled to write some notes about this distinctive Kingdom. If you are travelling to the Middle East during the summer months except the worst in terms of heat. The first thing you will notice upon your arrival is the hot/humid weather combination! I honestly thought that coming from a hot and humid country myself, I would not suffer too much under temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius, but it was much worse than what I expected. On my first day, temperatures reached 52 degrees Celsius which is something that I never thought would be possible. It was humanly impossible for me to stay outside an ... read more

So, my last trip before leaving Kuwait this year was to Bahrain... The home of Michael Jackson, a grand prix track which takes up half the island and many far eastern ladies of the night..... I can't remember so much of the weekend. I didn't even sleep at the hotel I booked a room in - a proper UK style random night. I think the club we ended up in was called F1 and had a Phillipino thrash metal band playing.... I live for such odd moments ) Bahrain is an unashamed middle eastern party island (just off Saudi Arabian Coast) - problem is that it is people from the Middle East that are there partying. Now, that sounds slightly harsh, but people from the Middle East just don't 'do'party at all... They do overly ... read more

Down the causeway to Saudi Arabia Middle East » Bahrain By rickmooreMay 16th 2007David Moore Bahrain is an archipelago of some 36 islands with a good efficient airport where women can actually drive (and show their hair) just a few km across the causeway from Saudi Arabia. But like Saudi, people come from all over the world to work. Saudis come here as well - but to shop and party - making the causeway very busy on the weekends. We went on a side trip across the causeway to the Saudi Arabian town of Nai'riyah - lots of sand, and desert. I am always surprised with the amount of life out there - from snakes and scorpions and assorted insects to camels camels and more camels. I am going to be rich because... read more

Rob took me to Perth international airport and we arrived there for 9:30am I was able to check in at 10am. Flight departed at 12:15 on time. Arrived in Singapore and was first off the plane as the seat was next to the exit. The pilot advised temperature is 32C so cooler but the humidity is high as you felt it as soon as the plane door opened. Cleared customs and then got the first taxi since I left the UK to the Royal Peacock Hotel based in the china quarter. Did not feel like much to eat due to travelling so thought could get a basic rice dish no luck could get fish heads, or live frogs and they look awful. found a shopping centre and that had a burger king so went there and ... read more

We went back to the Civil Affairs office today and made the adoption final. By 10:20 we were back at the hotel and she is officially ours. She went in the pool today, she's still deciding if she likes the water but she looked so cute in her tiny baby swim cap. All the workers at the hotel and restaurants love the fact that we have her, they smile at her and give her and the boys lollipops and attend to her every need, her spoon doesn't even hit the floor when we are in the restaurant and a new spoon is placed before her. We have two more days of sightseeing in Hefei and then leave Friday for Guangzhou. The boys are madly in love with her - as I fed her, Nick stood on ... read more

I had no idea what to expect from our two and a half days in Bahrain, and now that our time there is over I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about it. Our decision to spend a few days in Bahrain was fairly random--when booking our flight to India we had a layover in the Bahrain airport, so we decided to extend it into a couple of days' stay out of curiousity. Bahrain is a very small island off the northern coast of Saudi Arabia. It is in fact connected to Saudi Arabia by a long bridge, which we didn't know until we got here. Our first impression of the country was disappointing; it looks a whole lot like Miami at night, or Chicago plus palm trees. Very urban, littered with American fast food ... read more

We spent three days in Bahrain on the way back from India. We left our Delhi hotel at 6:30 AM on Wednesday for the quick ride to the airport; traffic was nonexistent. However it was still quite cold and foggy and we hoped that our flight wouldn't be delayed. Checkin and security only took about 20 minutes; we then had over an hour to wait in the lounge. The Delhi airport was pretty basic once past security; I hadn't changed any of my rupees and there wasn't a bank. We plopped in the lounge for awhile, where someone had just grabbed the only computer. We soon boarded the Gulf Air flight to Bahrain; biz class was full with families. They served either an English breakfast or an Arabic breakfast with fuul and arabic bread. The flight ... read more

This trip is the first time I have ever travelled out of the United States. All of my children and grandchildren travelled to a foreign country before I did! Although I am an adventurer at heart, I must admit I was anxious about going on this trip. It had been over twenty years since I'd flown commercially, and the thought of being on a large crowded airplane for seven hours at a stretch was what I dreaded most. As it turned out, the flying was fine. And when I thought about how people used to cross the Atlantic on ships that took two weeks, I felt very grateful for such a comfortable, fast journey! Upon landing in London (Gatwick) we hit the ground running. Henry, who usually takes his time doing things, has a different persona ... read more

Once again, I found myself in Bahrain... but now visiting not only Shawn, Augusta, and Kai... but also Quinn, my newest niece. She is a very cute baby. We are still trying to figure out which features she got from her mom and which from her dad. She definitely has Shawn's feet and fingernails. But she also looks a lot like Augusta did as a baby. The last trip in April it was hot (but not Bahrain summer hot). This time it started out very chilly -- I was told by one of the locals that it was the coldest he could remember it being in the past 25 years--but eventually it got up to the low 70s. We stayed a total of nine days. A lot of that was spent going around to the malls ... read more

Although I stayed in this small island country for only two days, it was a rewarding one. I was staying in downtown Manama, which is busy place with a souq selling gold. In day 2, I went to visit the excellent National Museum of Bahrain, which had a detailed introduction of the history of the country. Knowing only the minimal before I arrived, I was surprised to find that the island had a history of over 3000 years, starting from the ancient Dilmun civilisation, through the Tylos era, to the modern times. It is quite amazing because one could find such a small place to have its identiy through such a long time, especially when empires, nearby and far away, came and go. As in the other parts of the Gulf, many people I met or ... read more
