Ramadan Kareem from Bahrain! We lucked in big time flying in here from Hong Kong with an upgrade to Business Class - “another steamed towel and a couple of chardonnays please” was a nice way to enjoy an 8 hour flight. Airport formalities were quite easy, Jude was finger-printed and photographed, and I bought a 2 week visitor’s visa for 5 Dinar (20 NZ bucks) and all was good - we knew that this was going to happen and all is in order! My visa will be extended by the Polytech until Jude’s residency comes thru (I think), tho I may have to do a “visa run” by flying to Dubai for a night or three and come back - all paid for, no sweat. Nothing can prepare you for the heat here, - I don’t ... read more

YAY! Let the adventure begin! Here is a starting entry to kick off our blog, as we jet out of NZ. Some info about Bahrain: Firstly, it's an Island - 33 islands infact, with Manama , the capital city being where we will be based. With a population of 155,000 in Manama - slightly larger than Matiere, there is a 24 km 4 lane causeway from here across to Saudi Arabia. Hundreds of ex pat's stream across from Saudi to Bahrain in the weekends to party and enjoy the more liberal approach to alcohol and socialising. With a coastline of just 161 kilometres, Bahrain is about the same size as the Isle of Man - but smaller than the main airport in Saudi, would you believe!! They drive on the "wrong side" of the road, and ... read more

I am sitting in Bahrain airport. It looks very similar toairports world wide except there are signs to male and female prayer rooms - also there are 20% of people in arab dress. I am disappointed as I could not see out of the airplane or airport as there is a sand storm at the moment. The wind is quite strong - as indicated by the flags just out side the window. My departure has been delayed an hour no reason given. I had 4 seats to myself and was able to sleep for a few hours from heathrow and Bahrain. We were delayed again once we were on the plane. I finally got to Kuwait 3 hr after my schduled time. Rowena, Rami and GiGi (Rowena's Mother in law) were there to greet me. It ... read more

Bahrain I left the center at 5:30. It was strange. All at once, we had the wrap-up session, I changed into travel clothes, and the taxi was waiting. I felt like I hardly had a chance to say goodbye to the people that I have worked and traveled side-by-side with over the past three weeks. All of a sudden I was in the cab and heading away. I hate good-byes and this wasn't any different. The next two hours were, to quote a Minnesotan expression "different." (That's a whole lot more than "interesting." Thinking back on it, "different" isn't nearly enough. We went at supersonic warp speed until we got near the Saudi/Bahrain border. Then it was your worst highway nightmare. It made driving in New York on Thanksgiving Day look like space shuttle speed. It ... read more

No, this isn't about some new sort of rain, it is about that little Gulf state, just off the coast of Saudi Arabia. And for that matter, this will be a short blog, meant as a teaser for things to come... Of course this could backfire horribly, should this turn out to be a terrible short blog! So what do you do when you have got twelve hours to waste, don't want to spend a penny and are stuck in Bahrain? Well either you sit down and cry or you do as I do and start walking. Not recommended in the summer though, but at this time of year it was surprisingly pleasant. A walk of about eight hours takes you along a few of the sights that Manama and Muharraq have to offer. What does ... read more

Hey all, here's a quick note to let you know what's up and wish you a happy 2009. Yes, we are way behind on the blog. Lack of laptop and slow/absent/expensive internet opportunties are just some of the lame excuses we have. We left India on December 12th and spent a short but wonderful 10 days in Pakistan. We are both doing well. In fact, putting back on some weight that we had both lost in the course of various aliments over the past 3 months. We are enjoying a reunion with Laura's sister, Lisa, and her boyfriend, Mark, here in Bahrain. Mark's parents have been living and working here for the past 12 years. They have been wonderful hosts, showing us around and feeding us home cooked meals! The Kingdom of Bahrain is very multicultural ... read more

by anna (and david) Catch-ups in London Having only spent a fleeting weekend in London for Ascot in June, we wanted to spend a bit more time there catching up with some friends. It was great to be able to stay with Yvette and Dom in their new apartment and do just that. While Spain had cooled down a lot before we left, the London weather was still a bit of a shock. There was snow on the ground from the night before when we arrived and it was cold and rainy for a lot of the time we were there. This was a great excuse to stay in and chill out though. We spent the time while everyone else was at work catching up on some emails and planning, then in the evenings we had ... read more

Well i can't quite believe i've now been away from the UK for over a year....i left 1st October '07 and will be back in a couple of days, Tuesday 21st '08....so this will be my last blog I've spent the last few weeks in Bahrain at my sisters place. It's very different from Koh Phangan of course, and took me a little while to adjust. I've been used to riding around on my motorbike, going off to the beach on my days off and enjoying the beautiful views of the sea and lush green palm trees....and although there are palm trees here, they are nearly all brown! It's just so hot and sandy here, and big buildings everywhere. I've got used to it now and it is a good place to be but not really ... read more
