Chapter 12 Back in old Napoli - that’s appalling They left the hostel and caught the 8.53am Eurostar from Florence to Naples via Rome. The train was not quite it’s English equivalent but very comfortable nonetheless (and more leg room). Rather bizarrely this was the first Eurostar Martin had taken since leaving the company (Eurostar UK LTD.) back in December. He headed to the bar and went to order some drinks, to be met by a young girl called Raffael who used to work on board the Eurostar back in the UK. What a very small world it was as they reminisced about the people back in London. What were the chances of that! Once more, the landscapes were spectacular especially between Rome and Naples. Three hours later they found themselves pulling into Napoli Centrale. Positoned ... read more

Chapter 11 Goings on in the night Once the Australian chap had switched off the light, it seemed a more comfortable night was indeed possible. Not a word of it! The Japanese started snoring again and two of the stooges kept coming in and out of the room. They were muttering profanities loud enough for the ozzie chap to hear and respond with a giggle. Martin was slowly but surely losing his temper until having gone in and out of the room at least twenty times, they finally did hit the sack and some sleep was achieved. That was until about 5.30am, when the other stooge arose with a torch and started casing the joint. Very shortly afterwards the other two also got up and proceeded to wander around aimlessly. Not knowing what they were up ... read more

After much discussion amongst the exchange students in Lithuania, it came down to Priscila and I going to Scandinavia for the Valentines Day Weekend. We both wanted to go to Copenhagen, and since we were going to be flying into Southern Sweden anyway, we decided to shoot up to Stockholm for the end of the trip. After taking the ‘flybus’ from Malmo, we wondered over to the Hotel Jorgensen, one metro stop north of the main station at Norreport. Great place, about $20 with a full breakfast buffet incl. Unfortunately, all my pics save for 8 loaded onto a photo sight were lost. While in Copenhagen, we were able to take in quite a bit of the city sights, art galleries, royal palace, WWII resistance museum, first castle, and of course, the little mermaid. We saw ... read more

The Generator youth hostel is a wonderful establishment. Dirt cheap and safe accommodation in central London. With a late night bar. Generous prices in the bar, gaming activities, big screen TV, and pool tables. What else is do you need? This bar naturally attracts the better part of the clientele visiting the hostel. Would almost be a crime not to honor its activities with a couple of beers. The crowd is split up into the groups in which they arrived. We have the Scandinavian guys joining in on the trivia games. We have the American high school kids chatting around the table. We have the gang playing a game of pool. We have the group of French high school kids drinking and smoking. We have the more quiet crowd chatting over a late bite to eat ... read more

Chapter 10 A Taste of Medicine Hostel rooms must be vacated by 9.30am, which would not have been a problem if lack of sleep hadn’t prevented a comfortable first night at the monastery. It was 12.30 before Martin entered the room the night before. All the lights had been turned off, it was so dark he couldn’t even see his bed. So fumbling in the pitch black trying to ascertain the location of his bed, trying not too awaken the Japanese who were obviously settled, he finally managed to find what he assumed was his bed. Fortunately it was the correct one, but trying to undress is no easy task on a bottom bunk without disturbing the unfortunate chap on the top bunk. Eventually he managed it and with his head to the pillow, sleep was ... read more

Chapter 9 “Where’s Florence?” said Zebedee Rise and shine! Well they arose but the sun wasn’t exactly shining. They were off to Florence today. (both of them had been looking forward to seeing Florence). They caught the bus to the station and managed to catch the 10.59am direct train to Florence. However in the rush, they had both forgotten to validate their tickets, a common practice in Europe, having to validate rather than forgetting to. The guard gave them a very Italian telling off but fortunately felt enough compassion not to fine them. Martin had finally managed to reach the point where he was up to date in his journal, a task more difficult to achieve than at first thought. His brother Steve turned 35 today, making him reflect on how quick their lives were passing ... read more

Chapter 8 A walk with no pavements For once, Martin was up first, leaving Maya in bed with her thoughts. He headed off to the square to have his morning tea (a tradition he instantly became accustomed too when he first moved to England) and to write his journal. Two pots of tea later, Maya headed over and joined him. They had both wanted to see the Tuscan countryside and had agreed to go exploring. They headed out of Siena on foot, past a mental asylum, where Maya did a remarkable impression which technically should have had her sectioned, or working in a restaurant in Pisa. Once out of the town, the views were spectacular. The Tuscan hills and valleys came together interspersed with small churches every mile or so. The walk was blowing out some ... read more

Chapter 7 Siena: Into the Tuscan Hills They waved goodbye to Pisa after some cure for Maya’s hangover by means of grapefruit and caught the 11.18am to Siena via Empoli. Pisa had been interesting enough to visit but they both had a feeling that better was to come. At Empoli, the train was delayed for ten minutes as a local football derby had spewed out all the hooligans onto the station, fortunately none of them boarded our intrepid twosome’s train. There seemed very little difference in both appearance and behaviour between Italian football fans and English football fans, the only real notable difference were the hand gestures, though the meanings of them were pretty universal. After the brief delay, the road or rather the railroad to Siena lay ahead. From the train, the Tuscan hills rolled ... read more
