Well, not really. I suppose I could call myself a jelly donught, but I’d rather not. I’m just Kira…. Who just returned from visiting Berlin for the first time! What a neat trip! I’ll get into it in just a minute. Before I do, I wanted to announce where I will be heading in two weeks! By the narrowest margin in “Cultural Enrichment Idol” history (Okay, okay. This thing has no history), Sweden won! I will actually be going to Scandinavia with a guy named T.J.., who is a junior at RIT. We will be heading to Sweden and… *surprise twist*…. Norway!!! So yes. I’ll definitely put up a blog of our adventures in Scandinavia! So! Back to traveling. I arrived in Berlin around 3pm and, after settling into the hotel, immediately began to see ... read more

Europe » Ireland June 19th 2007

Ange and I had decided we had been working too hard - so it was time for a few days off and an opportunity to see another part of the northern hemisphere. With five days off we decided to take the opportunity to duck over to Ireland to catch up with Ange's friend Lawrie - a fellow Tasmanian now based in Dublin - and to do a bit of sightseeing around Dublin and the southwest of Ireland. Once again we began our day with an early 5.30am start for the journey out to Stanstead airport and onto Dublin. It still surprises me the short distances between countries here. The flight is only an hour from London to Dublin - crazy!!! Well after a fairly uneventful flight, we arrived in Dublin to what could only be described ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome June 19th 2007

Only about 20 people on the bus this time. The scenery was different again, right next to the coast, green hills with grapes an olive trees, very tranquil i thought. At a camping ground again but good accomodation, staying with 2 guys (one Brissy that worked at the southbank cinemas). Had a meal outside our cabin with Jane (NZ) an Jess. Started early in the morning for our Rome walking tour. Started at the Spansh steps an walked along to Trevi Fountain. They were cleaning it so little dissapointing at first. Went to a few Piazzas an past a shopping street just for popes an nuns, windows all full of gowns. Went to the Pantheon. All these famous things are just tucked away around blocks so quite weird to turn around a corner. A lot of ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris June 19th 2007

So now I have a cold :(. I suppose it is inevitable when you put your body through this type of stress, so live and learn. It's not bad though, I just have to deal with sniffles and boogers for the next 3 days. This morning we went to Versailles and saw the castle and royal gardens. They are HUGE!. Bob had to take care of a few administrative items for Anna's tour group, so we ended up gaining free entry into the grounds through all the confusion. And I got my first taste of an angry Frenchman. Bob was trying to reserve audioguides for the tour with a woman working at the desk, and her manager rudely stepped in and began explaining how it wouldn't be possible to reserve them in advance. The argument went ... read more

Europe » Romania » Transilvania » Sibiu » Medias June 19th 2007

Although I write this from Hungary, Several days later, Medias is the last town in Romania we visited, so is dated and placed from there. "Do they have running hot water here?" Has become a by-word for the dumb, pointless question. Our route ran to Brasov, then Sibiu via public transport, then piking up a car in sibiu (Cultural Capital of the EU, 2007), we made our way to Sighishoara, then to Suceava, then Bistritsa, then back to Sighisoara, Sibiu and Medias, to drop the car off and pick up a train to Budapest. As you can imagine, every town was beautiful. special Kudos must go to sibiu (lots of old buildings with pretty coloured rooves), and to Sighisoara, which looked exactly like a picture postcard, only bigger. Really. It looked more like fairy land. ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Slovenian Littoral » Tolmin June 19th 2007

Siesta Yesterday was scary......we all went unconscious at about 4.30 pm after a hard day on the archeological sites and could not wake up......jet lag kicks in. This morning I woke at 4am to jagged throat and tap nose (you were right David ) but not about to let a summer cold slow me down! So after slow breakfast of Pasta Dura toast and Peanut Butter, we went to the markets to pick up fresh ingredients for our home made dinner tonight, and a walk around the rambling laneways around Piazza Farnese. Then we head off to St Peters. So many nightmare stories about huge cues so very happy to rock up and straight to the top of the line and through security.....and the girls came prepared with long legs and sleeves so we were stright ... read more

Europe » Austria » Tyrol June 19th 2007

OMG~ as soon as we drove into Austria, my heart skipped a beat. Gorgeous green mountains, rivers, lush green grass and the friendliest people on the planet. Always smiling and helpful even when they don’t understand us. The day started off very well with a gorgeous mountain bike ride through the forest, mountain and along the river. The ride was 10kms long stopping half way of a nice lunch in a traditional house. It gave me time to think, this world has so much to offer and traveling is the one thing I will never stop doing. Breathing in the fresh air and seeing these mountains made me realize why city slickers go for the sea change or green change. It’s amazing and the best place so far on my trip. After the mountain bike ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona June 19th 2007

Arriving in Barcelona was beautiful..huge culture shock from Berlin and for almost 3 days I could only come up with German or french(?) when I was trying to communicate....and a few words of resort spanish...damn! I was to rent an apartment from a couch surfer from Venice Beach (Texas originally), Ramzi, but he ended up staying in town and we hung out for a few days. While in town I spent most of my time out, in Monestir De Monsterrat and Terragona. Monsterrat has a beautiful Monastery surrounded by rugged mountains (peak 1200ish) which Ramzi and I hiked all day and got some stunning photos. Tarragona is a city founded in 218BC by Romans..and the people now have built the city into the ruins - quite amazing...oh, yes, look for my apartment...not hard to miss...just ... read more

Getting the fish was the first thing Albert wanted to do, so the Fishmonger could be cleaning them while we continued shopping. Albert is pointing to the Dorade he chose for lunch.Tuesday began early with a target departure time of 7:30 AM. This was because we were meeting our Chef in downtown Aix-en-Provence at 9:00 AM or so and it was about an hour away, rush hour, parking, you get the idea. We made it right on time and walked to the Tourist Bureau where we were to meet and in about 10 minutes, not one chef showed up, but 2 chefs! Our head Chef du Jour was Albert Ughetto. He has many years of experience in France, Aruba, Costa Rica and most recently Florida, where he recently sold his restaurant and returned to France for ... read more

Despues ... read more
