So, what do you do when living on a boat in January in Cartagena, Spain? Most of the time, ordinary things that most do in their own homes – cooking, dishes, cleaning, laundry, going grocery shopping, run errands to pick up things in a variety of stores and find time to read and relax. Well, we do these as well, but we do notice that many of these tasks take longer than they do for us at home. Yes, our home here is only 40 foot long, but as the space is broken up and there are numerous “little spaces” to clean or sort, it actually sometimes takes longer to get those areas sorted. The addition of trying to move things out of the way but not “disrupt” the rest of the boat too much is ... read more

Europe » Spain » Canary Islands » La Palma January 28th 2024

Sunday 28th January Today we are on the island of La Palma, we docked at Santa Cruz around 9am, it was quite hazy and on our panoramic tour the guide explained that the haze is due to the Calima, a meteorological phenomenon that occurs when fine sand and dust particles from the Sahara Desert are lifted into the atmosphere and transported by prevailing winds. Our first viewpoint stop the haze was still apparent but it was a lovely view and we learnt a lot about the growing cycle of the dragon tree. The island is very green with palms everywhere and at this time of the year the blossom is out. We had a stop viewing the volcano and the blackened path of the lava flow that had decimated the area. After lying dormant for half ... read more

I forgot to post my blog yesterday, sorry so you get two today. Dandelions and all sorts of weeds are in full bloom here. Almond trees abound everywhere - they grow in private yards but also are plentiful in the countryside growing wild. Can you image just walking out anywhere and picking your own almonds? There are plenty of other flowers showing off their blooms as well - bird of paradise, osteospermum, and so many that I can’t put a name on. This morning we drove to Portamao and while Peter and Daphne went to their church meeting, Anne and I walked the city. We were dropped off at the river and so we trod the cobblestone rehabilitation along the banks of the Arade River. Evenly spaced along the walkway were sculptures from local artists carved ... read more

January 22-26: csondes vipassana elvonulás a barrancoban. 7 en keltünk útra a barranco (vizmosás) aljára, 20 perces leeresztkedés, teljes felszerelésel, 4 napra ételkészletekkel, ivóvizzel, a táborhelyre. Mintha a Gyűrük urából a tündék erdei lakját áttranszportálnénk egy monumentális kővilágba - a szurdok meredek falain barlangokba épitett meditácós fülkék, lakások, gyakorló szo... read more

Saturday 27th January We have been to Madeira many times before, this cruise we don’t plan on doing too much galavanting so after a stroll around the sun deck we took a panoramic tour around Funchal, just a couple of photo shoot stops. The guide was very informative, a lot we already knew but did learn a few things new. One of the stops we have been to so many times I think we should get loyalty points for visiting, but the view over Funchal is great and so too the swan neck Agave (Agave attenuata). Some of the passengers stayed in Funchal, but we returned to the ship and enjoyed an alfresco lunch back on board. A lovely sunny day and everyone was feeling upbeat now that we had finally reached our first destination. Saga ... read more

Our final winter destination for 2024 is the Malaga area of Spain with a side trip to Ireland. We spent 4 days in Dublin on the way to Spain and will return for 12 more days in April, doing a self drive tour of the Island. The over night flight Toronto to Dublin with AC was actually quite enjoyable. We departed on time, was hosted by friendly staff and arrived on schedule. There may be hope yet for our national airline?? With an overnight flight, it’s always a struggle to stay awake until normal bed time in order to adjust to local time zone as quickly as possible. After arriving around 7:00 am, we took the “hop on hop off” bus. It was much better than in other cities as the driver provided some interesting comments ... read more

Thursday 25th January Our location is off the coast of Portugal The seas were quite calm last night & this morning when we opened the curtains we saw a beautiful sunrise, after all the grey days and high winds the calm sea and sunshine were a delightful start to the day. We enjoyed breakfast in the grill and then took a stroll around the deck, it was a bit breezy but still enjoyable. Many of the chairs on the deck were still tied down but were released as the day progressed and some even venture around the pool We still have a fair way to go but the estimated arrival into Funchal is Friday around 8pm. I think everyone will be glad that we finally will be able to walk on land again. Tonight being Burns ... read more
