Today I caught the train to Munderfing. Yes that is right, I am now in Munderfing. This is where two very good friends of mine from Dubai are currently living and where I will be hanging my hat for a few days. For those of you that are not up on your rural Austrian geography, Munderfing is a little village that is just outside of the district of Salzburg. So to get there I caught a train from Munich to Salzburg. Rod and Jess were kind enough to come and collect me at the train station and then take me back to Munderfing in there lovely little red peugoet that I totally remember from Dubai. Rod and Jess have a lovely little apartment about the electrical hardware store here in Munderfing and their landlord is the owner of this store. Their apartment is great and is about 4 times the size of the one that they had in Dubai. It also has a masive balcony and lat night we had a mini BBQ on this balcony with a couple of guys from Rodney's work (KTM motorcycles).
Today Jess and I had a supremely active day. First of all we got
up and headed out of the mountain bikes for a totally goregoues ride through the forests behind Munderfing. According to Rod this forest is actually the largest, uniterrupted forest left in Europe. This took us about an hour to complete. And when we came back we had a gorgeous lunch of leftover salad and BBQ meat. Then just because we hadn't done enough exercise in the morning we headed off in the afternoon to walk around Mattsee Lake. This was a beautiful walk that took us about 3 hours. The area of Austria that Rod and Jess are living in is just gorgeous. It is rural Austria and it is quite common to drive past tractors on the roads but the scenery is just amazing.
The strangest thing that I have seen here thus far though is the cow sheds. Apparently the Austrians keep their cows in small sheds all year round. I can understand that you might keep them inside in the winter months however they keep them inside in the summer as well, and all the fields are used to grow hay and feed that the farmers cut and then feed the cows inside the sheds. I'm
just like, let the cows out and let them eat the grass in the sunshine. However it just doesn't appear to be the way that things are done here, and there must be a good reason for it.
Well it is now another day in Munderfing and unfortunately the weather isn't as nice as it was yesterday. However this is actually a good thing as both Jessie and I are suffering the after effects of a rather large day of exercise yesterday. In fact we are both rather pathetic this morning. The original plan was to drive to a little village and then drop off the car and then walk up to another little lake up a hill. However because the weather wasn't looking the greatest (thunderstorms were forecast and yesterday 21 football were struck by lightening in austria) and because we were both so doggoned tired, we decided that we would modify the plan somewhat. So after a bit of a lazy early morning around the house we hopped into the little peugoet and headed off to find the town of Fucking. I kid you not, the town of Fucking - check out the photos. After out little
tour of Fucking we drove off to look at a more sedate village called St Gilgen. This village is on a lovely lake called Wolfgansee. We had a delightful little lunch here along with a beautiful piece of apfel strudel for desert. And that was pretty much our entire day today.
