We stayed in Bergen for 3 days, during that time Arne and Olav came on board, and on the 24th, we left to join the shetland-race. The weather was warm and sunny while we were in Bergen, but I think I had too high expectations for the visit. It was a very nice place, and people there were happy to stop for a talk, but the tourism there were a little to big for my taste. And also I had heard that Bergen had those little special shop, but I coldn´t find any. Maybe I went to the wrong places, but all i saw were common everyday stores, that you find in more or less any larger town.
At the beginning of the shetland-race it went very well, although we came a bit to late to the start line. At one point we actually lay in third place of our class, but when the night came, the wind died, we did some bad decisions, and were overtaken. Later, we also had a bad jiib with the genaker. It took a lot of time to get it corrected and therefor we were set back a bit.
When we were close
to Shetland, near the finishline, the wind died again, and we had trouble keeping the sail filled. But we made it in the end! Actually some boats gave up and fired up the engine. We arrived at the harbor the 25th june at 18:20. On our way in, Jorgen spotted a puffin bird, that made us all a bit happier, it was a big event for us since we never had seen a puffin bird before!
The town Lervick looked old, with small castle like stone buildings. It had some good soul in it and gave me a harry potter kind of feeling. The people there were nice to, and the first guy we met invited us to his granddad for some whiskey.
We stayed in Lervick for three days. On our second day, we rented a car so we could see a bit more of shetland. But when we drove out of Lervik we could only see big green fields, with white dots everywhere, the white dots being the sheep! Every time i tried to pet one, they all ran away. Driving a bit further we arrived at a lighthouse almost at the edge of some 40m
high steep cliffs all the way down to the sea. Between some rocks, unmarked there was a hole, called the canon, it is about a meter in diameter and we could hear that it somehow ended up down in the sea. We threw some rocks down to find out how deep it actually was. But we just heard it falling, hitting the rocks until the sound faded and disappeared.
As we left Lervick, heading for an island called "fair Isle" we saw 3 more Puffin birds! I tried to take some photos, but every time I had my camera ready, they disappeared.
As we got closer to the island we actually spotted a flock of killer wales, they passed only ten or twenty meters from the boat! We tried to follow them at a distance, but gave up after a while.
I thought Lervick had a great deal of sheeps, but really, Fair Isle has ALOT! It looked like they owned the place, were wool bits and sheep droppings everywhere, covering the grass.
The nature itself was beautiful with large green fields and steep cliffs, but It also had a shabby feel to it, with abounded equipment
and buildings, even some of the sheeps looked quite worn down.
We found a cave, and took some photos of it, and right above us, outside the cave, there sat a Puffinbird! We change the lens on the camera, adjusted some settings and right before we got to push the button... the Puffin was gone. But as we left, ready to go for a nights sail, there were hundreds of small puffins sourounding the boat, and at that moment, they weren't that special any more...
