Our self catering apartment in Richmond (we had the top floor flat).
Oh well...here it is - the last blog.

It's Sunday evening - the day before WORK !!! Six months off....it feels like going back to school after the summer holidays :O(

Anyway....we came back from travelling with a month to go, and whilst we were away we hatched a plan to go and see a bit more of the UK. It's funny - but whilst travelling, it's very easy to romantise about being 'back home'. Talk of pubs, and the BBC, and simply being able to cook up some beans on toast are a common occurrence. So...we decided rather than sitting at home - we'd get up and go again - and here's a few pictures of our UK road trip.

It was a great couple of weeks...as you'll see we had some great winter weather. Lots of long walks, great pubs and watching Newsround and Neighbours in the early evening (note: Harold tried to kill someone !!). We ended up going from the Peak District to the Yorkshire Dales and Moors. We then traverse across to North Wales - and down to Shropshire. What fantastic scenery, buildings and places this country has!

Anyway - if anyone fancies doing something similar...here's a couple of top tips:

1. Britain is closed during winter! Most of the National Trust places we had on the list didn't open until April. Quite frustrating...but as you can see we found some nice places. We didn't even know places were going to be closed.

2. Flippin' 'eck - it's expensive. Since when have B n B's started charging £60 plus for a room. We had a bit of a shock when we started looking for places to stay. I was convinced you could get by on £25 - £30 a night.. but we found no where at that price. Bit of a shocker when you've been used to less than a £10 for some pretty special places.
Anyway - the solution was self catering. As it turned out that was a great idea - we had some superb places to stay - and we didn’t have to go out for a meal every evening. Steve became an expert at hunting out the local Farmshop !

3. Move over The Good Pub Guide. We purchased Alastair Sawdays' special pubs of England book (http://www.specialplacestostay.com/titles/pub/index.html ). Bloody fantastic - get a copy. It's

This was fake...the real stuff was yet to come
basically stuffed full of the best 'gastropubs' around Britain. We can safely say that the book is well researched - we are on a new task to try them all !!

So...that's about it. Hope anyone who's been reading these blogs have enjoyed them as much as we have enjoyed being in them! What a privilege it’s been - a fantastic experience - we are soooo lucky. If anyone would like to come round and take a peak at the 6 thousand other photos we have - feel free !

This is Steve and Lou signing off and going back to the real world.

Boo Hoo !

Refreshing change
i am due to depart on an adventure around asia for 6 months and australia for a year in 2 weeks, i can't wait to go and i am very excited about the diverse cultures and breathtaking scenery that i've been hearing so much about. I just wanted to leave you guys a note to say how pleasantly refreshing it is to read a blog from somebody who is taking time to appreciate the joys that we have on our own doorstep. too many people nowadays are only interested in sunny weather, beaches and palm trees and forget how beautiful good old blighty can be! (p.s. don't get me wrong about the sunny weather, beaches and palm trees - i cant wait to get out of this god awful cold!) anon
