and this time it was mine. As the weather was nice and we felt it unlikely we'd be going far this year, we decided to pitch our tents in the field and have a weekend camp. We began the day with a trip to Dad, where a bottle of fizz was ready in the fridge, then back home where various friends turned up during the day and, besides bearing gifts, helped to eat birthday cake or drink gin and tonic.......it was lovely. Thankyou everyone for such a special day. Loads of lovely cards too, including special editions from Martha and Jack.... read more

Alex had a birthday this week, he was spoiled with cards and presents, and we celebrated with takeaway fish and chips at Dads. Today we had to take a tent to be repaired, it had a small tear but a stitch in time...... So we went up to the Wirral, outskirts of Irby, Janet, where the sail/tent mender lives. Then found a walk along some old tracks where we found the first caches we'd found for A LONG TIME.... read more

Now we can go anywhere, and into Dad's bubble too, we've been quite busy! On Saturday evening we got a takeaway and ate at Dad's house, its a long time since he's had company for a meal. Then today, Alex chose the seaside for his day off, so that's what we did. You'd think it would feel funny after hardly driving at all, but it actually felt pretty normal. We had a good walk over the dunes and along the beach, before getting fish and chips for lunch. There were a few people about, and lots of wet sandy dogs, but it was easy to keep a distance and everyone we met was considerate. Alex was complimented on his goggles and cape, and one mother told her children he was a super hero (he caught a ... read more

After 14 weeks, the rules in Wales were relaxed a little starting from today and we were allowed further than 5 miles. So we pushed the boat out and went about 15 miles, into Shropshire and up on Stapely hill. It was great, lovely to be walking somewhere different, and the air was definitely fresh. Hats and heads had to be held on in places! Even the elderly dog was enjoying herself, bouncing around like a puppy...sort of! Then home via Tescos, and out with the lawn mowers (I did ours, Alex did Marian's) before the rain tomorrow.... read more

I think for my last birthday, Alex bought me a basket making kit. Well, whenever I thought I might have a go, I remembered that the willow must be soaked for 48 hours before it could be used and was thus not ready. But mostly the pack was gathering dust in a corner. But what better way to spend some time in lockdown, I suddenly thought, just as we're nearing the end. So, that's what I was doing yesterday. Sadly its a poor job half done, as after an hour my hands were so cramped that I couldn't hold the willow. And beside that, you need some strength too. So even if it was finished, the spaces are so big I'd need some pretty large berries so they didn't fall through the gaps! I don't think ... read more

Well, we're still well and truly locked down, but I'd been busy this week waging war on the brambles which were encroaching on the field, so we decided to have a bonfire tonight as our contribution to V.E. day. And this morning I spotted some bunting in Meifod, so here's our V.E. day blog.... read more

Dad's birthday today, 97!, so I popped down with cake (no candles, too windy) and a bottle of fizz, and we sat outside, well apart, and celebrated quietly. He'd had lots of phone calls this morning, and probably missed more while we were outside. It was lovely. happy Birthday Dad. x... read more

Well, we're all in the same boat I suppose, confined to barracks all over the world. Its really strange not being able to pop to Welshpool, visit a neighbour, or meet a friend to go for a walk; but cars are banned unless for a very good reason, so its Shanks's Pony for me. We're allowed out to go for exercise, and the lanes round here are beautiful with spring flowers at the moment, so, apart from the hills, its a pleasure to go for a walk, and you can stop thinking about CV for a while too. Our neighbours have banned together to offer help where its needed, its actually a great atmosphere. And although I cant get to see dad that often, I ring him every day and he's coping fine, of course! So ... read more

We were invited to my Uncle Franks and Auntie Margaret's diamond wedding anniversary this weekend. Its a long way from here to Clacton, but as Janet and I were bridesmaids we decided to go, and she picked me up in Oswestry on her way from Llandudno. We were so glad we went. It was absolutely wonderful to see them both and all the family and their friends, and we had a great time; naturally, lots of washing and hand gel involved. And the food,...……..! Luke is a star! Their children and grandchildren did them proud and worked so hard to make it a special day. Thanks to you all for a lovely afternoon. When's the next family party?... read more
