Gabby the motorhome - oops no that is not right , the car with no name AKA Clint was parked up on an almost empty, windswept sandy car park in Barmouth. The sea looked angry. Grey and dismal. Bashing itself against the rocks and then the tide went out again . Only to continue doing the same thing as the rain fell heavily. Not exactly the best of days to enjoy walking along the promenade in the seaside town that once would have been bustling . Perhaps it bustles in the summer season with all the day trippers. Today though it was feeling and looking not unattractive but unloved . As seaside resort that once would have been thriving on the summer holiday trade had long gone into decline . It was not the only seaside ... read more

I looked out the window around sunrise to see if it would be worth going out for some photography - it wasn't as it was still raining. We went back to the hotel for breakfast - another opportunity missed when they asked for our room numbers. We went to breakfast early (rather than five minutes before it closes, which is our usual routine), which was a really good move. Portmeirion does not open to day visitors until 9.30am and we had the whole place completely to ourselves, so it was a great time to wander around again to enjoy and take some photos, particularly as the rain had stopped and the sun was actually shining. At 9.31am, it was suddenly heaving. A lot of people were there for a wedding that was taking place in the ... read more

We love flying off to far-away places, but it is nice to be able just throw everything we need (and a lot more that we don't) into the boot of our car and drive off with no worries about baggage allowances and what is or is not allowed through airport security. It's about four hours' drive from the Home Counties to North Wales and, once we crossed the border into Wales, the scenery became stunning and covered in sheep (we wondered how the farmers manage to track them down come slaughter time). Whilst the scenery took a turn for the better, the weather took a clear and instant turn for the worse - rain followed by more rain. The roads also took a turn for the worse, with the dual carriageway ending just before the border. ... read more

Where in the world is Gabby the motorhome ? She was destined for a day out. The plans had been laid . Criccieth Castle . The last of the stronghold of castles built in North Wales to subdue the Welsh. A castle we had passed on many occasions but never actually managed to set foot in. Today was planned . We would head for Wrexham , top up with fuel and LPG , travel to Criccieth and spend the night somewhere near the sea . Well that was the plan . As is always with good plans they sometimes turn out to be not so good . The morning was frosty and it felt cold . We toyed with the idea of moving the car and then getting Gabby off the drive . We were slowly ... read more

Rob docked at Caernarfon (north Wales) today so we drove to greet and pick him up. He and a long-time friend, Allan, sailed Rob’s newly purchased yacht from Dartmouth in southern England to Caernarvon in north Wales, passing around Lizard Point, Land’s End, across the Bristol Channel, passing St David’s Head, across Cardigan Bay, into Caernarfon Bay to their destination. Rob and Mary have been sailors all their lives so this ‘little’ jaunt was a stroll-in-the-park for a person of Rob’s experience. Many a plan has already been made by both of them with regards to ‘tarting’ the boat up. Sadly, we will not be here to enjoy the fruits of their labour … however … we will return …... read more

The day began with an early bike ride by both of us and a wipe-out crash for Jane. ‘Very’ fortunately she escaped injury. Another cyclist came around a blind corner at speed and wide. Applying the brakes on pea blue metal whilst leaning into a corner has only one result … a slide … into the path of Jane who rode over his bicycle before falling and landing on him as he was under both bikes and Jane. After that bit of excitement and having Jane’s heart rate calmed we departed with Rob and Mary for a place very special to Jane, Morfa Nefyn in Wales. We met very close friends of R&M’s who were moored a little off-shore, had lunch from the “Ty Cock”, which celebrates its 50th year owned by the Webley family and ... read more

Having decided yesterday that today was the day to go up Mt Snowdon, we breakfasted early and set out. When we got to the station to collect our tickets, we were advised that the train would only be able to go as far as Rocky Valley station, about 5/8 of the way to the summit, because there were 65mile per hour winds at the summit. We were also advised that we would not be able to leave the train as the wind was too strong. We were given the option to cancel, but we decided that we would like to go as far up the mountain as we could. The train was ready to leave on time, and the little steam engine, with a rack took us up the mountain. The first part of the journey ... read more

The weather forecast was important in our decision making this morning. We want to go up Snowdonia, but the weather needed to be good. It was clear from both the forecast and the sky that today was not the day! Instead we decided to travel on the Ffestiniog railway. We decided to travel from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniogg. We went down to the station early to buy tickets. The carriages were already waiting at the station, we only had to wait for the engine to arrive and couple on. There was also another train to Canarvon, that was due to leave a little after our train. It actually arrived at the station first! There was a bit of consternation as to whether we were on the right train, but the helpful volunteers soon had everyone back ... read more

After a good breakfast, we left the Grafton Grange Farm to move on to Wales. Before we left Bakewell, we stoppped at Haddon Hall. This hall is a medieval hall,,still used by the family and fairly intact. The weather was not so good, with rain forecast, although it was only grey to begin the day. We walked over a small bridge to the Hall. It was quite large, with some defensive protection, but certainly not a castle. It also had a small, tiered garden, with different levels accessible from different areas. There were some very old tapestries, and also quite a bit of furniture from the medieval times. By the time we had seen the hall, the rain was beginning. We had a three hour drive to get to Porthmadog, so got on our way. A ... read more

For all the travelling I have done, I've definitely not seen enough of my own island. By island I mean Great Britain and what better way to do it than to go camping?!In July of this year we went camping in Snowdonia over a weekend. Snowdonia is a National park, a mountainous region in North Wales with an area of 823 square miles and is home to over 26,000 people. It’s around 3 and a half hours drive from my home town of Cheltenham but totally worth it. The campsite we stayed in was called Dolgam and it is both a campsite and a B&B. The campsite itself was basic with washing up facilities, electric hook up points ... read more
