St. Andrews is the home of the University of St. Andrews,the 3rd largest university in the English-speaking world. The university plays an integral part of the town and student population makes up to a third of the population when in session.

It is named after St. Andrew the Apostle. There has been an important church in the town since 747AD. It became the ecclesiastical capital until the Scottish Reformation.

Its famous cathedral, the largest in Scotland, now oies in ruins.

St. Andrews is widely known as the home of golf with its many courses and most widely known the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.

The ruins of the castle lies on the cliffs above the sea, north of the town.
