Whatamore Steps
In Ulbster there was 318 steps that led to an alcove. We got back into Thurso on a warm, bright, sunny Friday to stop at the bank, store and the TIC. Of course we got the best weather on our last few days! We took the A9 and A99 to Ulbster and found the Whatamore Steps that I had read about in my Lonely Planet Guide. There were 318 steps that led down to an alcove which was scenic and peaceful. Again, we were the only people besides the birds. The climb back up was rough. We then found the Hill O'Many Stanes which has over 200 stones in a fan shaped pattern in 22 rows. These were small stones and date back to 1900 BC. We were driving along the coast when we came upon a village called Lybster. It had a small lighthouse and the Waterline Visitor Centre. It had displays about the history, flora and geology of Lybster and a recent built wooden boat.
After here we explored our last archeological site at Grey Cairns of Camster. No one else was here either. There are 2 of these on site; one is round and the end is 10 feet tall. The other is long with 2 entrances. I

Suzi looking out at the alcove went through all 3 entrances even though the last one was very narrow and had to practically crawl through most of it. At one point I thought I was going to get stuck. How embarrassing that would be! I made it to the end and it was a smaller area than the others.
We were staying at our last castle, Tulloch Castle Hotel in Dingwall. This was very pretty and our room was huge. We reserved dinner and had an excellent meal and dessert. We found out the next morning there was a haunted room. Had we known that beforehand we would have booked that room! We went to Cromarty, saw another lighthouse and then went to Black Isle Wildlife Park. It had different types of animals including zebras, llamas, alpaca, meercat, wallabies and many others. Being a Saturday, it was crowded with families and children. I loved the wallabies! We also had another warm, sunny day. Ahhhh!
Cawdor Castle started as a 14th century towers with additions added later. We walked around the gardens and a couple trails in the Big Wood. This was a pretty castle too. We drove to Cullin to the Crannoch Hotel and

This is what the steps looked like from the alcove. were warned that our room was right above the bar and it could be loud until midnight. Our room was small but decent. We got ready for a night out but the hotel bar only had older people and boy playing pool. We left and walked around but nothing seemed to be happening. We even got in the car and started drive toward Banff but then turned back and went to the beach.
