Started off with a nice scottish breakfast (black pudding, haggis, white pudding, sausage, haggis, potato scones, toast, eggs, haggis, grilled tomatoes, and baked beans). Then off to Pilochry to see the Edradour distillery which is the smallest distillery in all of Scotland and incidently is Nigel's favourite scotch! The tour was fabulous and took us through the warehouse where there were many casks, the oldest of which was turning 50 years old next year. Many of these were casks of Edradour and there were also many casks from other either existing or no-longer existing distilleries where the owner of Edradour bought the casks and will later bottle them under the original scotch brand. We also saw the stills in action and a malting room. The entire distillery operation is done by 4 men. They showed a ... read more

So... where was I? Leaving Edinburgh in the afternoon, we jumped on a bus and headed for Pitlochry to meet Sarah, one of my friends from way back in Airlie Beach in 2004. We arrived after an absolutely magical bus ride, the scenery so beautiful with all the reds and yellows of Autumn coating the countryside. Sares was excited to see us, and shovelled us off home to me her parents, Sandra and David. They are such a wonderful family, and live in a beautiful home amongst a bunch of family owned chalet lodgings that they rent out to travellers. It was great to see Sares again, and we stayed up yakking until 1:30am. The next day we had a big tour planned with Sarah behind the wheel of her little Vauxhall Corsa: she was driving ... read more

So today is the last night in Scotland for 11 months...how scary is that? The flight leaves Edinbutgh at 1 pm tomorrow lunchtime and I touch down at 7 pm (Canadian time, actually about 3 am). Then i've got two days in Vancouver before heading to Lake Louise on a mamoth 15 hours bus journey through the Rockies, stand by for pictures of this epic. Due to start work on Saturday, working for the ski company as a ski technician. At the moment there isn't much snow but it changes everyday and there should be enough to open the hill on the 8th of November, fingers crossed. Look forward to letting you all know about my big adventure in the big bad world, Aly x... read more

Am off thisevening to my grandmother's timeshare flat on Loch Rannoch. I have no idea what it's going to be like, other than it's furnished and is supposed to be beautiful countryside. I've got enough food to last me, my hiking boots and a camera. I think I'm set. I don't know if there's going to be internet access anywhere, so if I don't write for a while, don't worry--you'll get a catch-up much like last night's! I am totally amazed by Pitlochry. Went for a walk thismorning out over the dam and down by the water...it is unbelieveably, heart-breakingly beautiful. I could spend my life here, if all I could see were the hills, mountains, trees and water that I'm looking at right now. I'll probably be back here sometime this week if I get ... read more

Well, I said last year that I left my heart in the highlands.....and here I am, back at the very beginning, where the landscape changes every couple of minutes....but my pics are still of Edinburgh, so bear with me...am in Pitlochry at the moment, on the verge of climbing some mountains and hanging out on the edges of lakes.....this life is amazing. Backpackers have a common thread, and no matter where you go, you have an instant family of people who are willing to help you regardless of geography, language or race....this is what I've been waiting for the whole of 2008.... read more

Day one of the three day highland romp bus tour and I am back to really enjoying myself. It was up early this morning to make sure I made my bus on time because the hostel I have been staying at in Edinburgh is a ways out of the city center. Yesterday I had a good Scottish day that started of with a sampling of haggis, which was dddddelicious! After I walked around and made sure I knew where my tour bus was leaving from and dropped in on another comedy show. I stopped in on the Scottish National Gallery (at the recommendation of my sister) which was absolutely impressive, and totally free! It was a fairly calm night at the hostel, but I met three friends and talked till about midnight while getting totally smashed ... read more

Hello all :) Well spring is fast approaching and excitement is building for 2 months trekking across Europe! I’ve been working in Kinloch Rannoch at the Dunalastair hotel, north of Edinburgh since December and it’s been working well for saving money (especially in the past few months off season). But I’ve decided I’ve seen enough of Scotland for this trip and will be flying out of Edinburgh for Amsterdam April 30th!!! I’ve booked a Busabout flexipass for some stops in major cities including Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Munich and Venice. This part of the trip should be a great chance to meet people and get into the spirit of budget backpacking. This leg of the trip should be about 3 weeks or so and then I head into Italy. I’m hoping to spend about 2 weeks or ... read more
