A bright sunny Thursday to start the day off. We had purchased out hop-on-hop-off bus tour for 48 hours, so we still had a few hours left to use it. So we hopped on to get to Our Dynamic Earth, near Holyrood Palace and Park. What is Our Dynamic Earth? It's a pretty cool museum that takes you thru time... from the beginning of the universe to present day earth. We start off in a classroom where the ghost of James Hutton demonstrates his theories on how the Earth was formed. After that you journey on to a room with a huge 3-D globe that shows the shifting of the earth and the plates. Then it's into the "time machine," a room that shows the formation of earth. Once the earth forms, you move into a room where you get to experience what an earthquake feels like and then what the arctic feels like. All very realistic, all very amazing. After, you go into a simulation room to fly across glaciers and feel the earth below and the sky above. Lastly, you watch a movie in the ShowDome which is a 360 degree theater. I would tell you what was showing,
but I was sleeping during the short 4 minute movie. All in all a great place to visit with kids. Very well done, very entertaining and educational.
After finishing our journey it was close to lunch. So, the kids had lunch at Our Dynamic Earth and while the adults ventured out to have lunch at Oink Hog Roast on the Royal Mile off of Canongate. At Oink, they roast a whole hog and sell pulled hog as a sandwich. You can get the Piglet (small), the Oink (medium) and the Grunter (large). On each of the sandwiches, you can also get a sauce… I think the choices were sage and onion, BBQ or Haggis. Tricia at this point hadn’t tried Haggis yet, so we settled for 2 Sage and Onion and 1 Haggis. All very good. All worth trying.
After lunch, we planned on hiking Arthur’s Seat. Arthur’s Seat is a part of Holyrood Park and is the highest point is Arthurs Seat. It also happens to be a dormant volcano and sits about 823 feet above sea level. Fabulous views of the city. Very panoramic and a great way to burn some energy
Arthur's Seat
Views from Salisbury Crags for the kids. Very easy to do with any level of fitness. We did the Salisbury Crags hill walk (i think), the easiest of the routes. The boys climbed straight up, the girls strolled around and we met up in the middle. Jim was a trooper. When the stroller no longer was an option, he hillwalked with Lily on one hip and his 25 pound bag on his other. I lucked out and got to use the folded up stroller as a walking stick 😊 On a clear day, definitely should be a must do for everyone visiting.
Needless to say, we were all tired and famished by the time we finished with our hillwalk, but we missed our hop-on-hop-off bus time by 30 minutes. We tried two times to hop, but both times the drivers weren’t having it. They said our time expired. Boo Hoo. So we hiked up the Royal Mile and souvenir shopped a little. By the time we made it back towards city center, we were hungry, so we headed to Mums for dinner. Mums was off of Forrest Road and considered southern comfort food..… 20 + ways to eat Bangers
and Mash!. I had the plain porker, herby sausage with garlic mushrooms mash. Pretty good. Very good way to end the day.
