Day 3 After breakfast we made our picnic lunches, today being Saturday we had no work tasks and we were to set off for a full day walking guided by Hugh to explore more of the island. It promised to be a good day as the sky was clear blue and the temperature was rising. As a group we set off from the village to the head dyke to meet the tarmac road that linked the base to the radar installations. This road was constructed in 1957 by, Hard Rock Task Force,5004 Airfield Construction Squadron RAF,very steep and with several hairpin bends in places, the road passes the quarry blasted out of the hillside, the stone then being used for its foundation. This was quite an acheivement for a visting party, including naturlists, given the task of taking stock of ... read more

If you didn't get my last email let me know.. I didn't receive any responses.. (If I don't get responses, I might not continue to do this ;)) Day 16: Wednesday June 7: Cairo I'm going to miss Crazy Cairo. The first day I got here, I wouldn't venture out more than a couple of blocks from the hotel, I didn't know how to cross the street!!.. Cars regularly make 3 or 4 lanes out of 2, and none of the traffic signals are operating.. A flow of traffic will travel, until there is the slightest break, and then the other direction will butt in.. Luckily most roads are one way, but that doesn't mean all the cars actually travel in that direction. Today, I can walk in the middle of the street without worry, weaving ... read more

Day 2 An early rise and shine saw us all down at the jetty loading "The Orca" for 7.20am having prepared and eaten our breakfast."The Orca" is a 42ft motor cruiser specially built for the St Kilda run which can take 12 passengers at 20 knots and is skippered by Angus who fished for lobster and crab for many years around Harris and St Kilda. After leaving the shelter of the small isles off Harris we were soon into open water where the sea became a little choppy and we all settled down where we felt most comfortable,I took my stance at the rear, in the open, as my sea legs are not particularly good. Soon all sight of land was lost, even though the weather was good and the visibility was clear, eyes were straining for ... read more

Day1 I arrived at York station to catch the 6.37 train to Edinburgh to find it was delayed by 20 mins(good old GNER !!) due over-running signaling work.By the time the train reached Edinburgh the delay was 30 mins and I was starting to sweat that I would miss the plane to Stornoway ,however the bus connection was fine and I was able to have a glass of beer after checking in for the 11.20 flight. The small plane took myself and 11 other passegers just over 40mins to touch down in Stornoway.I was met in arrivals by Hugh Barton, our team leader for the next 2 weeks along with Terry and Sue Russell from Hoylake, who had arrived earlier on a flight from Glasgow. After introducing ourselves over a coffee and paninni we loaded Hughs Volvo ... read more

so i finally had to start working again....what a shame....i've enjoyed my time off from working but i'm also glad to be back at work and doing something with my time again!! So I'm now a waitress at the Ben Nevis Hotel & Leisure Club(sounds fancy but its not really!!) The work is pretty straight forward and easy...nothing i can't handle anyways!! I started on Sunday morning at 7am. For breakfast we just have to make sure the hot buffet is topped up all the time and there's always juice...other than that, we only have to clear plates from the tables. We finished that shift at about 1pm so we had the afternoon off until we started again that night at 6pm. The hotel doesn't do lunch so it's only ever breaky and dinner. The dinner ... read more

A little known fact about my family is that the three brothers, of which my father was the oldest surviving, went in very different directions. OK, so you could say that being a solicitor in Edinburgh (my father) is not a million miles away from being an academic lawyer at Cambridge (my younger uncle), but - to my mind - the most interesting brother and his family ended up on the Isle of Lewis where two of my three cousins still remain. (For the geographically-challenged, the Isle of Lewis is the northern-most island of the Outer Hebrides, a little further from Edinburgh than Edinburgh is from London). In the capital, Stornoway, one of my cousins, Moray, runs a pub/nightclub/pool bar, but is better known in the family for having appeared on the front page of various ... read more

ok i think i have left you in enough suspense!! the hostel in edinburgh was great!!! the people there were fantastic, travellers were always coming and going but we always had a little group of people that were staying for a while....we were called the 'long termers' haha so we hung around the hostel for a few weeks looking for work, taking our CV's to shops and job agency's. after a few weeks, one of the job agency's we went to called us and said that we could come in to register with them and then they'll try get us some work. So we registered and within a few days we had some work!! it wasn't great work but it meant we had some sort of income and we could stay here for a bit longer. ... read more

Edinburgh and The Cairngorms To celebrate our 10th anniversary we decided to head for Edinburgh and then continue on up to the Cairngorms. On our first evening we visited a comedy club. There was mixed range of talent: the compere’s material mostly consisted of having a go at the audience (you got a feeling of bitter disappointment in life such was the vitriol), and a class act from Canada and his observations on being a foreigner in Scotland. We stayed in a plush hotel for the first night and enjoyed a repeat visit to the Scottish Museum (highly recommended) in the morning. The journey is pretty impressive on the Edinburgh - Inverness route. After the Forth Bridge, the rolling landscape of Fife and the spectacular views of the coast, the train heads inland towards Perthshire. ... read more

I just ventured onto the great Scotish Isle of Skye with 3 friends, one of which if from the Island. The drive up through the highlands was like going back in time. Not only through the ancient history of Scotland its self, but back to my past in New Brunswick. The landscape started out being very similar, up until the hills towered into snow-caped mountains...that was more like the Kootanies past the Rockies. While on the magical Isle of Skye, we heard many folk lore stories about some of the peaks in hte distance, and we got to see a valley of Faery Glens, which are the entance ways to the faery world. We all had an stange and distant feeling as we frolicked by. My friend Catrionas father took us to a small little pub ... read more
