Chimneys

All over Scotland I saw old houses, most of the houses are old, with really a lot of chimneys on a row.
How they use that? Sometimes up to 10-15 chimneys on a roof. Still from the time every room has his own open fire?
Today , July 26th, I ll take the afternoon train to Aberdeen to board the ferry to Lerwick, Shetland Islands.
Wonder what kind of size the ferry has and what kind of waves we ll meet.
It will take about 12 hours to reach Lerwick where my first tour starts wednesday morning at 9.30
