Wednesday, August 1st- Edinburgh to Inverness:
Considering I’m now typing this on Saturday, August 4th, I’m pretty sure I’m going to leave some stuff out- got behind in my journal.
So, 8/1, we went to
Inverness. We had some side trips on the way. 1st (be still my beating heart) was
St. Andrew’s Golf Course where the British Ladies Open is being held. Our schedule said it better, “Over the elegant Forth Road Bridge and through Fife to St. Andrews, whose Royal and Ancient Golf Club, founded in 1754, has given us the rules of golfing.” Yeah, whatever. After that ( I took 5 pictures and sat and drank tea the rest of the time), was
Braemare- a cute little town who sold Whiskey flavored condoms in the ladies room (mom and I each bought two packs). Also it’s the home of the
Royal Highland Games for the past 900 years. Unfortunately we were too early for the games (barely). I was pretty happy with buying the condoms though. After that, well, we’ll let the brochure talk again: “Cross the Firth of Tay and from Dundee head into the Highlands. Drive through the Grampian Mountains, following the River Dee in the area where the
Royal Family spends their summer holidays (
Balmoral Castle). Later, visit a Whisky Distillery, where your guide explains the ancient art of converting barley, water and yeast in to a heart-warming liquor.” Whoopdee friggin do. I just sat in their lobby and worked on the vacation pictures. Should have gone walking around with Burt who found some Hairy Coos. Took mom 10 days to figure out that that means
“Hairy Cow”.
We got into Inverness around 5-6pm and, after Edinburgh, it was a bit of a disappointment. Everything in Edinburgh was clean and there were pretty old buildings and you felt safe. The part of Inverness we were at has bars on windows (including church doors and windows), there is trash on the sidewalk and you can tell that the people walking around are a different type than in Edinburgh. I’ve become a snob. Can’t help it if I’m better than everyone else. We were staying at the lovely (HA!)
Ramada Inn. Our view was good- we were over-looking the River Ness. That night we ate at the hotel- can’t remember what it was but I’m sure it was dry and there were potatoes. We were so exhausted that we just crashed in
the room that night. Every night I work on the vacation pictures for about 20 minutes then I’m so tired my eyes blur. Unfortunately, I seem to wake up at 3:30am when the sun starts to get up because I think we’re running late. Then, I wake up every hour until it is time to get up (usually between 6-7am, depending on departure time). So, we slept. Party on Garth.
Editor note from 2009: Wow was I down on Inverness! There were many pretty aspects to it, think I was just tired and craving American (translation: greasy) food.
