Another day of, as the locals say.... "Shyte weather" but nonetheless we braved the rain & wind for a trip back in time. Elke had surprised me with first class tickets in the 1st car. Nice big wing back chairs with a view to allow the world to glide by. As is usual for the train system here we left at exactly 10:15. Very shortly the sweets trolley appeared which supplied tea & coffee with shortbreads. Occasionally the rain would let up and allowed us the chance for some pictures. A quick stop at Glenfinnan to stretch our legs where there is a diner and a small railway museum. We have been to Glenfinnan before thankfully because it was a long walk to the monument to celebrate the landing of Bonnie Prince Charlie and his attempt ... read more

Day 6 - Portree to Fort William. Well the weather today was no in our favour. No high winds but a steady light rain all day. This was supposed to be the day to sail around looking for wildlife but no such luck. With a late start we decided to drive to Elgol anyways. We knew it was a picturesque drive (if not slightly treacherous). We were also looking forward to the Tea Room (closed) so we looked for another place and found the Elgol shop. A lunch of leek & potatoe soup with the Elgolian (squat lobster sandwich). On our way to Fort William we had time for a little excursion hoping to see some wildlife. Well we thought the road to Elgol was exciting...the road to Kylerhea was a real adventure. With the excessive ... read more

Geo: 56.8188, -5.10966We had only one thing on the agenda for today--riding the Jacobite train from Fort William to Mallaig. Since Philip has to concentrate on driving and won't have much chance to see the scenery, we planned the train ride to give him a chance to relax, too. This seemed to be the best spot in our itinerary for a train ride, and it turned out to be a beautiful ride. We drove from the hotel and parked in the lot adjacent to the train station. This was one where we had to buy a ticket from a machine to leave on the dashboard while we were away. There are many different ways to pay for parking, and we have seen several already on this trip. There are three or four trains that ply this route, ... read more

Geo: 56.8188, -5.10966Before leaving Inverness to go to Fort William, I wanted to get gas for the car. It takes diesel and it is a hybrid so it hasn't used much, but it seemed like a good idea to fill up before leaving the biggest city we would see before returning the car to the airport in Glasgow. It was down only about a quarter of a tank. We asked a clerk at the tourist information centre if there would be a petrol station on the way out of town. She said there were none in that direction, but there was one at Morrison's supermarket which wasn't too far away. She gave us the directions, and I put the location in the gps, We found it pretty easily. The pumps with the black handles have diesel ... read more

One way to remember a walk is to be faced with challenging weather conditions, a great sense of occassion and good company! Pleased to say that all three were amply met during our walk up Ben Nevis on Saturday 1st Sept 2012. Well after two and a half months of anticipation and planning, Grace & I, finally made our way on Friday 31st August to Fort William via the scenic route….following 4 small de-tours (all part of the adventure!) we arrived at our hostel “Chase the Wild Goose”. There were several events taking place on Saturday 1st September: a) the Ben Nevis hill runners race, where aprox 500 hill runners head up & down BN via the quickest route…my uncle Derek was one of them (his time on the day was 2hrs 30min)! b) the 3 ... read more

Sitting in a campground overlooking the Firth of Forth is an inspirational setting for writing Blog #4. We spent almost a full day driving through the North York National Moor Park and enjoying the rolling and barren landscape, so different from what we've experienced in England and now in Scotland. Daily showers keep everything green and lush. Rather than tour Durham, we headed straight for Stirling, Scotland, where we were assured our MH issues could be diagnosed and cured. While under the care of George of M-Line, we had a loaner ITCHY FEET SERVICE TRUCK at our disposal and boogied up to the Stirling Castle for a thorough tour of the most critically placed stronghold in Scotland. The Scottish/English history of control of Scotland over the centuries depended on which army held control of this castle ... read more

Geo: 56.8188, -5.10966On our departure from Stirling, we had -- shall we say -- lallygagged a little, and weren't on the road as earlier as we could have been. On this day, we already knew that we had a very ambitious itinerary, with likely more places than time on our schedule. As such, K laid down the law and we all had strict orders as to when we were to be up, dressed, and packed, and all before breakfast. This put a sufficient fear of god into both Jane and Anna, that they were both up even earlier than planned, as neither wanted to be the person not ready on time. Believe me, this was a good thing, as the day ended up being even longer than we'd anticipated. As if on cue, the clouds cleared as ... read more

There are 2 ways to travel through life, you can drive or be driven. Today we started driving. All week I’ve been sitting on the right side of the bus, watching traffic as if I was driving to get used to the backwardness. Last night we mapped out an escape route from the rental place at Waverly Station making it a series of simple left hand turns to get out to the main road out of town. In conversation with some of our tour group we found that there was an access from a floor in the bowels of the hotel that takes us to within 100 metres of the station. That was great news since we were going to be hauling our luggage which includes Vicki’s monster suitcase which for some reason I’m always carrying. ... read more

With the “Skye Boat Song” ringing in our ears we packed our bags and said farewell to the Isle of Skye. We have had a wonderful time exploring Skye in weather that proved better than expected. This morning we head for Fort William en route to Mull. We have had various comments about Fort William from “Why would you want to go there?” to “It always rains in Fort William.” So Fort William here we come. It better be exciting and dry. Once the car was packed our first stop was the Skye Bridge for a quick photo or three. The walk to the top of the bridge provided us with great views all around. The wind had dropped and the sun was trying really hard to come out. This provided us with a fabulous atmosphere ... read more
