Happy Spring!!! Due to the overcast, we missed the amazing solar eclipse but the day was filled with great gifts on our Scotland adventure. We explored more of the St. benedict's abbey grounds and trekked around Fort Augustus. This thriving village of pop. 650 has charming businesses and niches. We explored more of Loch Ness and just enjoyed the atmosphere. It is chilly here with the wonderful aroma of peat throughout the countryside. Peat is a form of natural energy that gives off a lovely scent....and I believe attributes to the naturally good moods the locals all seem to excude. They will greet all on the streets and in their shops whether they are a customer or working away. It is very refreshing! These people seem to have a slower pace than what we are used ... read more

Geo: 57.1431, -4.68296After a hot Scottish breakfast, we were in the car, departing Pitlochry to the north around 9am. It wasn't the crisp blue skies of yesterday, but still temperate dry conditions. Today would be all about the natural beauty of Scotland. We reached our most northerly point in Scotland at Inverness, and then began a drive along the Great Glen in a Southwesterly direction. The Great Glen starts at Inverness and basically connects a series of lakes, or 'Lochs'. The first of these Lochs was the most famous, Loch Ness. You know why its famous. One of the worlds most famous mythological creatures lives here, the Loch Ness monster. There have been countless blurry videos, photos, apparent sightings and vague descriptions of a giant 'Pelesiosaur' type creature living in the loch. Our mission, to find ... read more

Getting Ready to Leave It's that time of year again and the B & B is finally closed after quite a successful 2012 again. The bags are packed, repacked and then packed again and when I find out I'm not overweight as usual then I go shopping and pack some more. This year we are taking a camping fridge with us, oh and we've squeezed the skottel in our case as well. Not much room for clothes, but hey, who needs boring old clothes, hopefully it will be hot when we get there. Although I must say the word from Durban is that it's not that hot and sunny yet. We are spending a few days in the Midlands visiting family before getting the flight at Heathrow on Saturday. South Africa here we come!... read more

Day 3 We woke to what has been the best hostel breakfast yet, boiled eggs, porridge, muslie and the usual coco pops, cornflakes and toast, but with the added spreads of peanut butter, honey and the usual jam. I know this sounds boring to those of you back home but when you get the usual for weeks on end, eggs sound soooo amazing. It is the little things that make all the difference to make you feel more comfortable and more at home. Nick, Matthew and I decided to wander into town and see if we could find the walking trail which followed Loch Ness. After one dead end, a private property sign and a forray into a local neigbourhood's 21st party by mistake, we decided to instead try the canal walk. This proved much more ... read more

We headed off today to travel the main lochs of Scotland from west to east, starting at the famous Loch Ness. The water is so deep that if you took all the world's population, doubled it and put everyone in the loch, you still wouldn't have filled Loch Ness. Incredible. It is a sheer drop from the edge too, it doesn't slowly get deeper. The colour is also dense it is like black ink and there is less than 2 metres visability no matter to what depth you dive. One of the inhabitants is a fish that only lives in the bottom levels of the loch and eats its own kind until the population is so low that they stop eating eachother and procreate to boost numbers, but then go back to eating eachother after the ... read more

The Long Journey to South Africa Now that we have moved to the beautiful Highlands of Scotland it is no longer a quick hour or two drive up the motorway to Heathrow, check in, and off you go. This year, apart from having to work out how to get from Fort Augustus to Heathrow, we also had to worry about the weather. Anyway, after a week of pretty bad (or good depending on whether you like or want it) weather with plenty of snow and ice and closed roads and airports the snow all suddenly disappeared to allow us to get to Glasgow. This was via the only bus on a Sunday from Fort Augustus (they've just put a bus stop outside our neighbour's house, how considerate) to Inverness then catch the bus to Perth, change ... read more

On the shore of Loch Ness we were perfectly situated for our search for the evasive Loch Ness monster. The days we spent here were crisp, but beautiful. We scanned the loch and searched the entrances to the loch thoroughly and then, to our surprise at dusk on our first night, we saw her. On our last day we were looking forward to Sunday Roast down at a local pub. We rugged up and ventured out only to find we had missed lunch time because Daylight Saving had ended during the night and we were an hour late! ... read more

Geo: 57.1431, -4.68296We began this morning at 5:45 thanks to our trusty alarm clock, Rich. After getting ourselves in order, it was off to another Scottish breakfast at Mac Donald's. (Ahem.) Stand E was only a brief walk away and while waiting for our bus we explored another really old cemetery. We saw graves of people who were buried before America declared independence. The "newest" monument in the cemetery was a statue of Abraham Lincoln. It was strange.Upon boarding the bus, we met Bill, an animated and well-versed Scotsman (kilt included), who made our day a wonderful one. We headed north from Edinburgh into the Highlands and completely trumped the Friday the 13th garbage by enjoying a SUNNY day. From a distance, we passed Stirling Castle, where William Wallace turned back the English by destroying a ... read more

Geo: 57.2453, -5.02335Now came the long drive down the north side of Loch ness! It took a while, but was a really nice drive, stopping at a few lookouts along the way, by Castle Urquhart (a ruined castle on the banks of the Loch), and of course, by the offical "Loch ness Monster Visitors Centre." I quite enjoyed the weird and somewhat unwholesome enthusiasm towards ensuring the whole loch ness monster myth stayed alive and well. All the stupid hype, cant help but have you gawking around looking for the damn thing. The closest thing to a ride on Nessie came in somewhat lame circumstances at the visitor centre. But ah well, that satisfied my cravings. Eventually, we came to the bottom area of the Loch, at Fort Augustus where we had a wander around and ... read more
