Friday 15 June 2018 - 12 miles (13.41 actual); Awoke at 7am to ominously dark room - was expecting torrential rain when I opened curtains but no just blackout curtains! Dark skies but no rain as was forecast! After a nice continental breakfast & a couple of muffins smuggled out for later, we happily abandoned our monstrous suitcase to the care of Ginger Routes & made our way to official start point of the walk. The first few miles were dry then we had a couple of showers - nothing too heavy, mainly drizzle but enough to keep my hood up to avoid the dreaded hair frizz. Stopped after 7 miles at lovely cafe/restaurant, Beech Tree, for much needed pee & scone! This place must be mobbed in summertime - fantastic place & so accommodating for ... read more

Left Newtonmore hostel after a little meltdown. The battery packs for my GPS/phone were low as I didn't recharge them correctly, so the GPS was not charged, I also noticed telltale signs of imminent saddle sores. I considered staying a day to charge packs, mail back some weighty items to Newcastle, and check a drug store for a sores remedy. Then I remembered my solar battery pack was still charged, there was no drug store in town, plus the post office didn't open till later. I decided to move on and address issues in the next town (Killin) Cycling was fairly easy to start, with a mix of up, down, and flat. Then the wind picked up... and relentless it was. By the time I got to Dalwhinne, I was desperate for a break, and I ... read more

Mein Tag fing früh an...SEHR früh! Abfahrt nach Düsseldorf war für 5:30 Uhr angesetzt. Wenn ich vorher noch geduscht und gefrühstückt habe, kann man sich vorstellen, wann ich aufgestanden ... read more

Wed 1 July. A long drive took us down through the spectacular Glencoe Pass and the scenery gradually starts to change as we reached the top of Lock Lomond. There was a noticeable increase in traffic especially coaches as we wound our way through the continuous stretch of bends and tight corners. As we approached the southern tip of the Loch we passed the famous Cameron Lodge where Marina and I spent two nights on the occasion of her 50thbirthday. We continued around through the small town of Ballock and a further 11 miles along the eastern shore of the Lock to our next pre booked site which was a small place called Balmaha. The site here is a farm with two fields once for Caravan Club members and one for Camping and Caravanning Club. The ... read more

I'm not sure if we took the high road or the low road, but we enjoyed a lovely day out on the banks of Loch Lomond. It wasn't too far to drive from Glasgow, but many, many people had the same idea so the traffic was pretty bad in places. Our first stop was the lovely village of Luss. There is a visitor centre where you can get all sorts of maps, leaflets and information. It is also a lovely place to stop for a picnic which is exactly what we did - and then we got soaked by a passing shower! The village itself is very pretty and the church is worth seeking out if only to amble around its ancient graveyard. Following a path at the back of the church we found ourselves on ... read more

Geo: 56.101, -4.63872We had a reservation on the 9:45 a.m. ferry back to Kennacraig so we were up and ready to go fairly early. Breakfast in the hotel was okay again. Yesterday, we decided that we wanted to stop at Inveraray Castle on the way to Loch Lomond since it was right on the route. I purchased tickets online, but had no way to print them out. I asked at the hotel reception desk if they had a business center where I could print the tickets. The clerk offered to let me use her computer to print the tickets. I have never had that allowed before, but perhaps it is easier and less expensive than maintaining a separate computer for the customers to use. I took just a few minutes to pull up my email and ... read more

Few things in this world ever made me feel smaller than I felt whilst standing above the vast body of water that is called Loch Lomond. I stood across from Ben Lomond and its mighty craggs were covered by clouds but it stood before me masking the dark islands that floated below. I expected vikings and warriors to spread out all around me or for dragons and fairies to tug at my sleeves pulling me into the dark watery abyss that surely had been laid out before me. It was such a beautiful and awe inspiring location, a place that for so many people must have always stood as a comfort of home. To me it was one of the last sights that I ever saw in the UK, at least for this chapter in my ... read more

So let’s set the record straight….the first 39 miles of the West Highland Way (WHW) is no walk in the park…it is BLOODY HARD! The 3 days walking on the WHW have definitely been the most physically hard & exhausting for me considering all the walking I have done in 2012. A fair description would be HAVEN & HELL on earth. The scenery is amazing, however the weather can be cruel (rain, wind & sun) and the terrain gives your whole body a complete work out. My experience has brought about a new found respect and admiration for those prepared to complete this walk in between 5 to 8 days & in particular those staying in campsites…now that is truly hardcore! My mind fails to comprehend how my uncle and so many of his friends are ... read more

Champagne showed the croweded veranda as 300backpackers cheered. It was the travel companies 21st birthday and they put on one hell of a party. It was like most crazy party's the picnic tables became dance platforms we from spilt drinks, the fashion for guys became shirtless and girls bikini top. Me and my friends danced and sang in unicen on the crowded table. But while others held sangrettss I held a soft drink and despite being saturated in champagne I was sober. Initially I was self conscious about not drinking but ironically dancing sober on a table I realised I felt more confident then ever before. I felt healthy, happy and I did not have my drunk eyes on. Not as many people commented or noticed the fact that I was not drinking. clear head, being ... read more
