Friday 11.12.2009 Day 58 Ayr We had the most fantastic bfast we have had all trip in the drawing room at stonefield castle. The views where over Loch Fyne were fantastic. We then went back to our room for a rest and then went for a walk around the castle grounds. We then drove to Helensburgh and had lunch on the water. We planned to then go to the Glasgow botanical gardens but the fog and the traffic into Glasgow was making it very slow so we decided to go to Ayr instead. We went for a drive along the beach it is the nicest beach I have seen in the UK so far. We found a nice hotel called the Chesnutt hotel it was a good price £60 ($108 aus) bed and bfast. They had ... read more

This year we attended the first round of the British Open at Turnberry, on the Ayrshire coast, southwest of Glasgow. (The officials do not let spectators bring phones or cameras onto the course, so we had to reenact the key moments on the pitch and putt course near our Edinburgh flat.) It was a lot of fun. Thursday was a lovely, sunny day, and the course was beautiful. We camped at the par 3 #6 and saw a bunch of big names come through, including Tiger Woods, Camilo Villegas, Justin Leonard, Vijay Singh, Darren Clarke. Then we went to the par 4 #16, which was a brutally difficult hole on Thursday. The green is bordered by a creek on 2 sides, and the pin placement led about 25% of the 30 players we saw to hit ... read more

Lots to update, have been without internet fo a acouple of days. July 8th Left Claclaig Inn Glen Coe) headed for Inverarary the seat of the Duke of Argyll the cheiftan of the Campbell Clan. A beautiful castle with the highest room of any home in the UK (60 ' plus) Walls all lined with weapons used at Culloden. Stopped for some great scallops at a roadside Inn (Lochgair). Headed for Girvan on the west coast of Scotland for the night. Well it was bound to happen - the hotel lost our reservation and was full. The owner called another B&B for us and got us a room at the same rate right on the seacoast with a great view of the Irish Sea & Ailsa Craig. We watched the sunset @ 10:30 pm. July 9th ... read more

Drumlanrig Castle Yup - so much for going to sleep at a decent time, I read until 3am - such a dumbass. I’m really tired this morning with only 5 hours of sleep. We got ready and went down to breakfast at the hotel. The bread was delicious, but the bacon was super salty and the scrambled eggs were good too. This morning we are heading to Drumlanrig Castle, which is only about 10-15 minutes ups the street from Trigony House. The castle didn’t open until 11am, so we took our time at breakfast and getting there. We were still about 15 minutes early. There was a mountain bike race event there which looked to be cross country and it was raining fairly steadily so the riders were all caked in mud. It seems like the ... read more

After seeing Baldrick off in the morning (just) we dithered until around 11am trying to decide where to go. In the end, deciding not to decide, but to head to Ayr and then decide, we set off into the gentle scottish wind (read gale). We navigated our way out of Glasgow with little difficulty, but almost 2 hours after having set off, were somewhat disheartened to still see the city looking very, very close. The way out of Glasgow was up, in fact I realised that this was the same way I left when I left Bladrick 9 years ago heading to Ireland. Glad to see I make the same decisions twice! The difference this time was the detour. It was an innocent looking detour, roadworks at a roundabout, and after heading off in three ... read more

Having been back at home for all of 5 weeks it was certainly time for another holiday. We had the perfect excuse, tagging on to Gillie and Gary's wedding in Troon - a week in Scotland. An easyjet flight and rental car got us to our holiday cabin which would be home for the week along with Debbie, Amanda, Dave, Mish, Josh, Jimma, Claire and Huxley. It could have been plucked out of Scandanavia and put down in Ayrshire - complete with sauna too! The setting was perfect and the weather stunning (on arrival) and the holiday spirit easy to get back into with a few beers and good company. The following day was spent in Ayr and with the weather deteriorating our fingers were crossed for the following day - the wedding. That evening with ... read more
