Last weekend the male contingent of the Eyre family were very keen to test out the waves in Scotland. Hence a 2 and a half hour drive from Oban to Campbeltown , straight to “Breaks” surf shop to hire necessary wetsuits and boards before heading to Macrahanish. The golf course is located directly behind the sand dunes and you have to drive across the golf course (beware the golf balls) and along the beach (in a 2wd) to the surf. Macrahanish provided a nice 3 foot swell and a water temperature of 14 degrees meant a couple of hours were spent catching waves. Of course Emily & I were not brave ( or silly ) enough to test out the water but were very happy watching from the shore. This weekend we decided to head to ... read more

Via Loch Lomond toward Oban We woke up to absolutely pouring rain! We decided to just grab a quick continental breakfast at the HIE, I had Frosties and yogurt. I had gotten some advice on our plans for today from the desk clerk; he used to be a coach driver and was really nice and helpful. He said the drive to Oban should take about 3 hours. The plan was to drive along Loch Lomond stopping to enjoy the beauty of the Loch, but it was raining way too hard for that. We also were going to stop at Lochawe and see Kilchurn Castle. We did end up stopping at a rest area on Loch Lomond, but there was no visibility at all. The GPS couldn’t find Kilchurn so we thought we could drive to the ... read more

Saturday 30 August - Oban to Barra (Geoff) Today is a quiet day lolling around town in Oban before we get on the ferry for Barra. Once again we went to the shops and I am now really worried as I came away with a couple of purchases and Sue ended up empty handed. This is almost unheard of and I can only assume that I am in for big trouble once we reach Rome and Paris. I might even have to go back to work to pay off the Visa card, depending how hard she hits it!!! At lunch time we looked around for a sandwich cafe as we are sick of little restaurants where the menu is virtually identical stodge to everywhere else. We thought we had found it in a little sidestreet off ... read more

“O ye'll tak' the high road and I'll tak' the low road, An' I'll be in Scotland afore ye' But me and my true love will never meet again On the bonnie, bonnie banks O' Loch Lomond." - Old Scottish Folk Tune Up far too early. Can't imagine why I can't sleep. So, I turn on the BBC who are promising a beautiful day, fire up the old laptop and wait for the coffee arrive. It does; I kill more time; I eventually get to the point where the tourist things will be open. I wander down the lobby only to discover a group of men gathering together for a business meeting. They are all in their kilts, talking on the mobiles. That vision cheered me up immensely! It's so weird how not in the mood ... read more

Me and Donna, Felicity and the two Idoa's (two Spanish girls with the same name, it's very common in there small town) are waiting for Ewan to park the bus before we get some famously good fish in chips in the small sea side town of Oban. It was a wildly successful, interesting, beautiful and full day of busing to sights through the highlands. The day started with stories of the brutality of English empiricism as well as some fauna info about the heather plant that turns the highlands a lovely purple color and a visit to the ruins of an old fort and barracks. We also saw some more ancient Celtic history with some stone burial mounds encircled by standing stones (Stonehenge rocks but smaller). The burial mounds both opened up in a specific direction, ... read more

Oban is a delightful port town - the exit point for the islands of Mull, Iona, Barra, Jamieson - but because I couldn't get any accommodation on the islands (booked out for all the EU/UK holiday makers!) I didn't go there - will go later. Spent several days walking around and chatting with the locals and savouring the fresh seafood. Walked up the 167 steps to the picturesque romanesque 'tower' built by this wealthy bloke to his own memory - he employed stonemasons in the wintertime (at reduced rates) so that their families didn't starve, so he was at least trying to be philanthropic! It was never completed to the grand plan of a hotel, so it's known as a folley. Basically, I wanted to rest and relax here in the seaside ambience, eating fish n ... read more

On our 3rd day of our visit, the weather starting slightly deteriorating, so we put on our jackets, packed our stuff for a picnic, and headed for The Scottish Sea Life Sanctuary. The place, located on the banks of Loch Creran, is a great choice for a full day out with the children. The premises comprise a very enjoyable mini aquarium plus a busy seal rescue facility, the Shoreline Coffee Shop with fantastic views of the port and the woods behind... On top of that, an adventure play trail and forest walk would compliment your experience as the area is surrounding by an incredibly rich flora, allowing a relaxing and contact with Nature... The Scottish Sealife Sanctuary at Oban came about around 1980, after a young seal pup was found abandoned by the mother and thereafter ... read more

The Isle of Bute lies off western Scotland, one of a handful of islands in the mouth of the River Clyde, north of the well-known Isle of Arran, and almost touching those fingers of Argyll that jut out into the Atlantic. I came across Bute in an article in the Sunday Independent about the marriage of Stella, daughter of Sir Paul McCartney of The Beatles fame. My road atlas showed me there was a railway between Wemyss Bay, (where the Bute ferry sets sail,) and Prestwick Airport, home of the cheap cheapo RyanAir, (God Bless Them!) So with tickets costing pennies my wife and I and two kids flew to Ayrshire. Prestwick Airport is a dream compared with London Airports...you just pick up your gear, up an escalator and onto the train! And good ol' RyanAir ... read more

Part 3: Oban My final stop on this Highland adventure was Oban but due to timing and traveling, I only ended up spending about half a day there. I arrived by bus in Oban around 8:00 pm on Thursday and, having had a long conversation with one of the ladies who was waiting for the bus with me in Fort William, I knew exactly where my hostel was and headed straight for it. The next morning, I woke up early so that I could do some exploring before having to catch the train back to Glasgow at 12:00. When I first went out, it was raining: probably the worst weather I've had the entire trip, excluding the cold and some rain on Thursday, but as I spent most of that day traveling, it didn't bother me ... read more

I was beginning to doubt it’s very existence. But lo and behold it returned this weekend after a long hiatus. The sun is returning to Scotland. The long, dark, cold winter is wilting away by the day. Tomorrow will be 4 minutes and 31 seconds longer than yesterday. When I last wrote, the sun was rising shortly before 9:00 and setting slightly after three. Now each day is noticeably longer than the last and come solstice there will be approximately twenty hours of light per day! This weekend was ideal for the sun’s full-blown reemergence. It was set against a bright blue cloudless sky, something we haven’t seen since well, I can’t remember. This past weekend we enjoyed a four-day holiday weekend on the west coast of Scotland. I’ll tell you more about that later, but ... read more
