Geo: 56.4104, -5.46972Another gloriously beautiful day, though still cold. When the wind kicks up, it's very bracing, as the English might say.We drove first thing to Loch Ness to take a boat down the loch to Urquhart Castle (pron. ER-kert). The loch is pretty impressive, being 23 miles long and 750 feet deep at some points. It's not very wide, though; maybe a mile or so? This morning, the water was a mirror and could not have been more lovely. I mostly stayed inside the boat (just our group was on it) but did go out in front a few times to take photos. Brrr! The loch, the surrounding hills and tiny towns, the castle … it was all so impossibly pretty! We docked at Urquhart Castle and were the first ones at the Gate House. It ... read more

We bid farewell to the Isle of Skye and headed towards our next night's stop, Oban. Our first sight was a brief stop to see Loch Garry, a lake that has the shape of the country of Scotland. It is a bit hard to see in the photo due to a number of trees blocking the view. We again stopped briefly to see the Commando Memorial near the village of Spean Bridge. Around noon we reached Lochy Bridge near Fort William where we were scheduled to take a tour of the famous Ben Nevis Distillery. Since the tour would last an hour or so, we stopped nearby to pick up some lunch in a decent little convenience store or supermarket. We bought a couple of pie pastries and bags of chips to eat after we left ... read more

Today was a driving day for a taste of the Highlands. Out through Dunblane and past Ochtertyre to see the 'gatehouse' where I spent the first part of winter '96/97 with my mate Bill. Not quite as grand as the big house 'Ochtertyre' - wasn't cheeky enough to drive past the guard to see the 14th century estate home, maybe next time though. Scotland was putting on a grand show today, Dunblane - rain, Callandar - sleet, Crianlarich well into the Trossachs now - snow. Keep telling myself it is spring!! The scenery through the Glens and past the Bens More and Lui is spectacular at the best of times but covered in snow with a few glimpses of sun on them and it is sensational. The light off the heather always has a red tinge ... read more

We decided to go to Oban to celebrate Trish's birthday. It was only a couple of hours away in the car from Glasgow and we had been told about a route which involved minor roads and spectacular views. In the end we had to play it safe and stick to main roads because visibility was about 5 yards! Welcome to the Scottish summer!! Fortunately the rain stopped just before we got to Oban and we were soon checking into our room in the lovely Corriemar House. The views over the Sound of Kerrara are spectacular from any angle, but just perfect seen from the comfort of your own room. You even get to see the ferries going to and fro. Believe me, that's quite a sight. They seem so close you could touch them. After settling ... read more

Geo: 56.4104, -5.46972Glasgow to ObanPicked up a rental car in Glasgow. Aaacckk! Driving on the left side of the road! It seems strange sitting in the passenger side of the car on the left. Charlie's still getting used to driving on that side, and Mary is white-knuckled.We're on our way to Oban, where we'll attend some "Highland Games.” Oban is on the west coast of Scotland – in the Highlands. It was a lovely drive there with many stops (Loch Lomond) and a long detour when a road was closed. Actually, the detour turned out to be beautiful – through moors, past Ben Nevis – the highest mountain in Great Britain. Highland Games are like a fair, but with lots of competitions. If you've seen Braveheart, you might remember when Wallace came back to his home ... read more

We spent a week in the bonny Highlands back in September 2012. Again, having been too lazy to write a blog at the time I'm afraid the photo's are going to have to do the talking for me.... read more

Following on from Killin we carried on heading West this time, through the top of the National Park on the way to the West Coast to a seaside town called Oban. Once again the scenery was amazing and the roads followed different Lochs around, through amazing bush, complete with waterfalls again, very similar to the West Coast in NZ......but the West Coast doesn't have Castles through the mist as you look across the Loch! We were following the road and came across a Loch called Loch Awe - aptly named I think as, as I mentioned, it had an actual ruin of a castle, that had been struck my lightning a few hundred years ago, sitting what looked like on a island in the middle of the Loch. I had to use all of my strength ... read more

Sunday; a pleasant,if short stay, in Connell with an early breakfast and a ride down to Oban for the 9am ferry to Coll. We had all our winter clothes on since whilst it was bright and sunny it was bitter cold with a North wind. We got on the ferry and had a brew to warm us up only for a very Inconsiderate woman to open the door of the saloon to the outside world letting in the bitter cold. I closed the door only for it to be closed again. Not wanting to cause a scene we eventually went elsewhere but never really got warmed up again and landed on Coll feeling almost hypothermic. A visit to the pub for some lunch and we felt much better before setting out to exlore the island. We ... read more

Thursday morning, an hour after we left the hostel, we made our first stop at a particularly scenic point in the mountains of the western Scottish Highlands, overlooking a range called "the seven sisters" or something like that. And I realized I had left my camera in the hostel. No one who knows me will be surprised by this; its the kind of thing I do all the time. The short version of this story is that my camera and I were eventually reunited in Edinburgh on Sunday around 8pm. In the meantime, the rest of my pictures had to be taken via Apple product. Which is why they look a bit like watercolor paintings. And I looked like a massive tool. I told the other people on the tour that they were free to pretend ... read more
