Geo: 55.2025, -6.52583"There are only two kinds of people in the world, the Irish and those who wish they were."I was starting to get very comfortable with Spud (so named because, in just the right light, our sewing machine on wheels looks like a large peeled Irish potato), so it was time to get out on some of the winding coastal roads that surround the Emerald Isle. Rental cars in Ireland are often times returned with missing mirrors and scrapped up side panels, and it was easy to see why as our trusty GPS had us navigating narrow lane ways that were ostensibly two lane roads. And I'm guessing that Irish property owners will reluctantly allow the government to take what they need to build their roads but not an inch more- to emphasize their point ... read more

This morning, we got up super early (4am) and caught a 7:30am flight to Derry (1 hour flight), Northern Ireland where we were going to spend St. Patrick's Day, Irish-style. We had heard that the weather over the weekend was going to be rainy, so we were happy with the little bit of cloud cover that we saw when we arrived. We tried to check in our hotel, but the door was locked and the bar attached to it was still closed, so we were happy that we packed our backpacks lightly, because we carried them around with us for the day. We quickly realized that Derry is a small town that likely doesn't warrant the three days we planned to stay there, so we decided to head out of town for the day, to the ... read more

The wonderful little town of Bushmills! Home of the bushmills whiskey ! You can find few restaurants, offering meals for reasonable prices, but be careful ! If you go to Bushmills, you have to visit the Bushmills distillery, that's very interesting, and you can taste it at the end, the one you want. From this town, you can go to the giant's causeway, it's really close ! This place is just amazing, but, one thing is just...crappy...you have to pay 6£ for the parking... When you have parked, you begin the descent, and go along the cliif to arrive at the end of the road, in front of the giant's causeway. In front of it, that seems small, but from behind, that's really huge!... read more

Geo: 55.2025, -6.52583Northern IrelandWe got off the ship in Larne, Northern Ireland (still part of theUK) just a bit after noon, and headed for the Giant's Causeway. We passed through the towns of Glenarm (missed taking a picture of their police building. It looked like a prison with a steel wire security fence as tall as the building and steel doors. Due to IRA bombings and attacks in earlier years, these small local police stations became fortresses) , Carnlough, Waterfoot (pretty seaside village), Cushendall (passed the curfew tower which was used to announce curfew times 300 years ago and also passed a bride and father having their picture taken in front of a church that we were in front of during a traffic stop. We waved through the windows while her photographer quickly snapped our picture), ... read more

Northern Ireland has been a highlight of the trip and my trip to Portstewart on the coast to see the Giant's Causeway was spectacular. I finally met up with my friends in Galway and had a bit of craic (a good laugh) with them as the sun shined down on us. It was another lovely day and as we chatted about memories of Prague and what the future had in store for us athletes were running and biking through the streets of the nice college town. It was some sort of adventure race with what appeared to be teams of two and three people with marathon tags on and bike shorts and small packs, some with helmets strapped to the packs, running through the streets on some sort of scavenger hunt. As I ate some ... read more

Sunday August 24th Rushport, Northern Ireland So I crossed the border to Northern Ireland. Nothing changed really except for the accent, but that changes every two miles here. Yes I crossed the border, not we. Stephan left yesterday, as planned, for Germany. But first things first. I left you at that house in Glendalough, south of Dublin deep in the Wicklow Mountains and far away from any civilization. As I told you, be came to Glendalough and found it ridiculously expensive. We started asking people if we could camp on their grounds. One guy finally told us about a spot up on the mountain right next to a little pond. It’ll be quiet there, nobody would bother us. So we went up the mountain. After an hour or more walking through the night there was a ... read more

Geo: 55.2025, -6.52583We started the day at Carrick-a-Rede bridge. This is a rope bridge connecting the mainland to an island. The bridge used to be used by fishermen. Now it's a major tourist attraction. For those who don't know.... I am deathly afraid of heights. I was really worried that I wouldn't make it. Or couldn't do it at all. It was a bit of a walk from the car park but so worth every step. The view was breath taking. When we got to the bridge amazingly I did it. I did not look down and when I got across I was shaking like a leaf but I did it!! And I even made it back! One handed to take a video. Now we are on a mission. Brian, our tour guide in Belfast recommended ... read more

Geo: 55.2025, -6.52583Today we drove north. We took the Causeway Coastal Route. It follows the coast from Belfast to Londonderry. The views were great. It rained most of the way but it was still really pretty.Along the way we stopped at Carrickfergus Castle. Very cool. This is the first castle we have been in where they actually had life size mannequins set up. Including the king sitting on the throne (toilet).... seriously! They also had a cartoon that you could watch telling the story of the castle. We drove through to our B&B on Causeway Road. This B&B is actually closer to the Giant's Causeway than the visitors center. Maureen, the owner was very nice and hospitable. She served us the all day breakfast every morning (cuz it lasts all day!). Eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, potatoes, ... read more

The town of Bushmills, N. Ireland to Dublin, Ireland to Holyhead, Scotland This is day 100 of our trip... and after much discussion, today we begin our trip back to the US. This has been a amazing adventure, with many challenges, wonderful people, memories, and experiences, but for Kel (Maureen) it is time to Go Home. Not to bore you, our "subscribers"-- that have followed us on this trip, but we want to let you know how we managed to find our way home. It will take some doing, but we plan to store the Bothan in Leese, Germany. Bob worked 34 years with a company in Butler, PA and his "old" company has an office/plant in Germany. So we drove from Bushmills to Dublin and took the ferry across to Holyhead, Scotland ( 7/17-18 overnight ... read more

Now, I know what it is like to be Charlie in the Chocolate Factory, but this time it happens to be a whiskey distillery. In fact, the worlds oldest distillery. This Sunday, I went with Ronald and Minda to Bushmills, a very small town outside the surf town of Portrush. We arrived at the distillery and took a tour of the Old Bushmills Distillery. Founded in 1608 with permission of King James the I after the infamous Flight of the Earls in 1607, the Old Bushmills Distillery has been providing high quality Irish whiskey (Just a reminder: evidently, you do not want to get Scotch or Scottish Malt Whisky and Irish whiskey mixed up because Scottish Malt Whisky has a smoky flavor and is distilled twice while Bushmills Malt Whiskey is distilled three times and lacks ... read more
