Hello to all! I hope that all is well with you and yours as you read this entry. It has been an exciting week here in what is my home for the next year. As you read in my previous entry, classes are underway and promising to be both challenging and enlightening. Speaking of which, this week we are discussing the period known as the Enlightenment. In preparation we have been reading some very well known, and controversial, philosophers; Kant, Foucault, and Horkheimer. The argument we are seeking to address is whether or not the Enlightenment was really all it has been claimed to be. Or did we simply trade one form of metaphorical imprisonment for another? I have very definite thoughts and beliefs regarding this question, however, you will have to drop me an e-mail ... read more

Despite the tourist mecca Ireland has become, travellers often fail to head to the north. Northern Ireland, with its recent history of political and civil unrest, is often overlooked as a tourist destination without due consideration of the many appealing aspects of its truly unique natural landscape. As we were to discover, Northern Ireland offers natural beauty on a grand scale. Again, a weekend adventure took us north from Belfast to the city of Derry, once THE hotspot of the 'troubles' but now a city trying to rebuild itself on the backbones of its long history, its unique city achitecture (wth the old city walls still intact )and its emerging identity as a modern, progressive centre. We took a tour offered by a local guide which gave a wonderful local insight into the both proud and ... read more

Following an excellent night out in Galway, my journey then took me on a tour of beautiful Conemara, which is a national park in the West of Ireland. Following an excellent stay in a hostel in Letterfrack, I cycled through Westport and Sligo until I reached Ballyshannon where I then proceeded north-east into Northern Ireland. One has to excuse my ignorance when it comes to Northern Ireland (I thought they used the same currency as Ireland), but what an amazing difference. With no official borders in sight and only a river dividing North from the South (in some places) it is absolutely surreal, how the telephone and postal boxes suddenly change colour, the speed limits change from km to miles, Tesco Supermarkets suddenly appear everywhere and there are less potholes in the road. A short stay ... read more

Mum and Dad had finally completed their epic tour of Scotland and Ireland so there was only one thing left to do. Chris and I flew to Belfast insanely early on Saturday morning and picked up a rental car from the airport. We were joining my parents to do the 'family history' thing in Northern Ireland. We had a quick look around Belfast before heading out to the country but the murky weather made the whole place feel depressing. I've included some photos that Mum took of the amazing murals that are a feature of Belfast. I'm sure the city has a fascinating history but we just weren't keen to stick around and discover it on this occasion. Our destination was the tiny village of Upperlands. This is where my great, great, great.. great (?) Grandfather ... read more

The Organ rock formation

COUNTY ANTRIM IS ONE of the territorial counties in Northern Ireland where you could find several interesting places to explore. One of them is the coastline where two well-visited tourist attractions could be found, namely: the Giants Causeway and the Carrick-a-Rede hanging bridge. Aside from these attractions, there are beautiful beaches and parks found in the county which I will also covered in my travel blog in the near future. In this journal, thru my photographs I mainly focused on the amazing formation of the Giant's Causeway as a world heritage site in Northern Ireland. There are interesting features associated with this Giant such as the camel, the granny, the wishing chair, chimney tops, giant's boot, and the organ which could be seen in the photographs. Often referred as the 8th wonder of the world, the ... read more
