Robert Cherrie who boys came to Australia Arriving in Scotland, First stop Gretna Green and the introduction for Glen to the Scottish dialect. And the Pub were we stayed, their was a Glaswegian chef who asked Glen what he would like for breakfast, only he asked it in his broadest Glaswegian accent. I only was just was able to translate, but you should have seen Glens face.
We traveled west through Glasgow to Loch Lomand the weather improving as it got warmer even so the snow still covered the peaks of the high mountains, we traveled right down to Campbelltown all the while marvelling at the most beautiful scenery and the most lovely places that we stopped. Avoiding deer and sheep. Quite funny after avoiding Kangaroos and Koalas and other Australian animals.Campbeltown was a lovely Scottish port, quite remote were fishing boats fish the North seas and also ferry people to the isles, seals swim in the cold water around beaches and won't disappear from the harbour till the summer months. We found a few of Glens clans in the Church yard here, such an old grave yard. But on reflection life must have been real hard here with the cold and the remoteness.Back on the road we
travel up the coast and caught a ferry to Skye, a magical island and ever so beautiful. ( Note to any one visiting Scotland never ever miss the west coast because there is a treat for you in every little cove and nook of the coast you just don't have the time to see it all)The back drop of the scenery is so dramatic and impossible to take in the beauty of the place. I truly loved the place. Traveling up the coast back on mainland we traveling back up to the lochs and staying at lots of lovely places. One day the first rain we had see in ages, we stopped at a hotel because we just didn't want to miss the scenery. We spent the whole day I front of the fire with a few malts ate and slept but in the morning we woke to the most lovely day and beside a loch with otters along the water side. magical !! Had planed to climb Ben Nevis but the time of year and the snow would have been too adventurous for us novices, we would have had to have a guide and better climbing gear plus when
Campbelltown
Graveyard looking for the clan we saw the mother OMG I think I would have needed a few days or three. So only small mountains till we get fitter.Up to John O'Groats the top of Scotland. We had thought to travel to the Shetland and Orkneys but we really find it hard to establish what we want to see and how we are going for time and so difficult we want to see everything but alias. Lots of other country's to see. Traveling down the East coast and through to Edinburgh my favourite Scottish city's. A week here lots to do and recharge our brains from the amount of places we had seen and experienced and to be as normal as possible stayed at a lovely b&b Kay and Murdo place along with their English bulldog Archie they truly spoiled us and their home was just lovely they made us feel so welcome like family. So much so as we had been out for dinner at Jamie Oliver's Restaurant for my birthday celebrations. When we arrived back a little later than we usually did, Murdo was standing at the door smiling. It felt like my Father waiting up for me. We enjoyed many things in
Edinburgh from the queens birthday celebration at Edinburgh Castle the Scots guards and the bagpipes. Princes, George and Rose streets were we paroused the shops with the tartans, kilts and cashmere and lovely arts and crafts. We walked and walked Klms . Even to the top of Arthur's Seat a large hill that stands in Edinburgh, and visited Holyrood House the queens residence when she visits Edinburgh. The weather was just lovely, it was sad to say goodbye to Edinburgh and to new friends made and so many wonderful characters we met. And on glens part didn't always understand what they were saying, but all was good I don't think they understood him either.Traveling through Brae-mare and visiting Balmoral Castle, and Glen remarking not another bloody castle, I had to giggle wait till all the Abby's start through the highlands. We have now traveled around most of the England Wales and Scotland traveling to key places were we think we will like. Places were I hadn't been, and especially to our ancestor graves or the places they were born and bred and worked. It may sound strange, to those who think we are a bit weird but for us it has given
Loch Lomand
A few malt and lovely dinner us a great insight to how they lived. Taken us to places that we probably never would have visited. And if we have found a grave stone it's been a great just to stand before it and think that without this history we wouldn't be here. We are now in Hertfordshire and planning a few days here and there, days out to Cambridge etc resting and relaxing before flying to Ireland I figure I am going to need to rest with all the Irish dancing I shall be doing. So the next time blog I shall be in Ireland, doing what! well we shall have to see what shananaghns we can get up too. Until then every one stay safe, and love to you all .......xxxx
