Saturday 12 April - 05:45am....Barp!, barp!, barp! Off goes the alarm, with eyes still shut Lav turns of the alarm and wakes Steve, reminding him of the amazing day's challenge ahead. Originally we thought the walk we had planned was 26 miles, but discovered it is actually 45 km (28 miles)!! GULP! The day's plan was to walk from historic Salisbury, join the 24 mile 'Clarendon Way', and follow it across typical English countryside pass fields, woods, meadows, quiet rivers, cosy pubs and picturesque villages with thatched cottages...28 miles to historic Winchester, once the capital of England, all in one day! We knew we were going to be taking on a huge feat - particularly because potentially we could be looking at up to 13 hours of walking in one day. Not being equipped with our ... read more

Today our adventure was to Salisbury to check out their cathedral. We again took our time in the AM because we knew if we didn't we'd be burnt out, but we made it to Salisbury around 12:30 for a great afternoon. Our first great find was a used book sale for a church! So we found some of those old Jane Austen's we were talking about, and I bought a fun short story book with authors like Arthur Conan Doyle and H.G. Wells... they're supposed to be scary ones! Fun! The woman running the outdoors part of the sale was really entertained by Angela and I and our reading tastes. It sounded like we could sit down over a cup of tea with this woman and really discuss some things. We had to pull ourselves ... read more

From Stonehenge, we went to nearby Salisbury (I'll write about Stonehenge in the next posting). It started to rain as we got out of the car (not unusual, as it has rained for part of each day since we arrived in England). The rain was the perfect setting for our walk through the Medieval part of Salisbury (I always imagine Medieval Europe as cold, damp, and bone chilling). We ran from doorway to doorway, ducking into the shelter of alleys, hoping the rain would let up. It looked so warm and cozy in the pubs, but we were on a mission to the cathedral. As you can see in the photos, Salisbury is very pretty. I loved the swans on the Avon river - haven't seen many of them since leaving Germany ten years ago. Salisbury ... read more

Geo: 51.0674, -1.79763This morning I caught the tube down to where Rach was staying and met her at the station. We then caught the tube to Heathrow and picked up our rental car. We had a choice of any car in row AB- there was only one car there, a purple Ford- prefect!! Rach was the driver and I was the navigator. Somehow we managed to work out the roads and we were on our way to our first stop- Salisbury. This town is well known for its early English Gothic style cathedral that was built in the early 1200. The church's spire is the highest in Britain. We had a walk through the cathedral and went to the Chapter House where there is one of the four surviving original versions of the Magna Carta- an ... read more

The youth hostel we’re staying at is pretty excellent—they’ve got all the girls in our group out back in an annex, so it’s like our own private cabin which is hilarious fun. This morning we had writing class where we read two sample essays out loud—mine and Katherine’s—and talked about what worked and what didn’t work. That was a little nerve racking since it was my essay on my experience at Scafell Pike and everyone else lived through it as well. Writing about something when you know everyone else was there to is a bit disconcerting, because you know they’ll remember details you didn’t and also catch you if you try to fudge anything to fit your narrative line, but it was nice to have some feedback on my writing. I really feel like it’s improving ... read more

Day 12: Wed, May 9th First thing this morning we walked over to see the Cathedral. It was raining and gloomy pretty much all today. When we got to the Cathedral we joined a tour that was just starting. It was a really good tour, the guide was very efficient in explaining the building process and history. It ended in the Chapter house where the Magna Carta is located. It was so cool to see, very old, with tiny writing. This Cathedral is a very impressive structure. The whole thing was finished in less than forty years. So, it’s all in one style, very uniform looking. And it has the highest Spire of any Cathedral in Britain. We then headed back in Market Square. I thought there would be a farmers market, since it was Wednesday, ... read more

went on another day trip tour. first we went to Windsor palace where queen Elizabeth lives most of the time. i don't know if its just me, but overall, palaces and castles are boring and all have the same flavor. the tour lady kept saying how busy the queen is and how she has a lot of work. BULLSHIT. all the royal family does is show up to events and act interested. i could do that! anyways, you should see Windsor because it is the palace to see imo. Salisbury is a nice town and cool to walk in but we mostly were there to spend time at the church. now maybe it is just because I'm a Jew, but churches creep me out and I'm only into really gothic looking scary ones at night that ... read more

Morning rose, checked out of the hostel. Headed to Liverpool St stn to catch train to Salisbury as per advice from Hendon Central staff guy which turned out to be wrong, but that was MY fault as I miss-pronounced Salisbury. He thought I said Southbury. Argh there goes a transit ticket. So we head correctly to Waterlooo station and pop aboard. The sweetest thing I discovered while aboard the trains in england was the bathrooms. Man are those cool. So we arrive at Salisbury after an hour an a bit. Lady at tourist office was really helpful, pointed us to the bus station. Short 10 min walk we get there and wait for the bus to Avebury. 1.5 hours later (man is it weird being a passenger on the left side of the road) get to ... read more

The past 7 weeks have been more then a little exciting. Having expected to have found a job within a few days, 7 weeks has been unexpected to say the least. But praise the Lord, I start tomorrow at Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Cheshire. The Norman family have just been a real home away from home and have made this rather difficult time so much more manageable. I also would never have been able to have existed unemployed for so long without their incredibly generous hospitality. So if you guys are reading this - thank you so much - you made this awkward and unknown time possible! Also for all the interesting places you took me to while i was staying with you - stonehenge, salisbury etc. Little grateley is wonderful! Debs and Myles have been ... read more
