This morning we filled the car to the brim with luggage for four before heading to The Kitchen in Keighley to have breakfast with Janet and Jill’s Aunty Kathleen. Janet and Jill are looking forward to going home, but will miss their family in Yorkshire very much. With several visits to this area under her belt, Janet drew on her local knowledge to suggest a couple of interesting things for us to see on the way back to Manchester. From Keighley we drove south on the A629 to Halifax to visit The Piece Hall. The Piece Hall was built as a venue for handloom weavers to sell the woollen cloth ‘pieces’ they produced. It opened on 1 January 1779 and featured 315 separate rooms, around a central open courtyard, in which the cloth merchants could store their ... read more

With the end of their holiday drawing nigh Janet and Jill have been running their food stocks down so we had to go out for breakfast this morning. What a hardship?! We’ve been having fruit, Shreddies and toast since we arrived so this morning I splurged on the pancakes with berry compote and Greek yogurt while Bernie went the full English breakfast ... without the mushrooms. Yum! Because the weather forecast for today was a bit ordinary (cloudy with showers) we decided to stay local and ride the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway which is running steam locomotives all weekend. It turns out we probably didn’t need to worry about photographing the steam train yesterday as there were to be plenty of opportunities today. The K&WVR is a five mile branch line that runs from Keighley ... read more

A week after the nostalgia trip to the FA Cup Final, it was the turn of the nostalgia music trip. The youth of today see the world of live musical experience as something to savour in either a mega arena or in a muddy field, where Wellington fashions can be compared. The mystique of both has always been lost on me, largely due to the size of an event where the optimum views are often of a giant screen. Meanwhile, a band plays 200 metres away. We grew up with the more intimate atmosphere of small clubs, where bands learned their trade the hard way and roamed the country in a Transit van. The trips to the now flattened Coatham Bowl were relished. The student days in Cottonopolis in the early 1980s gave me the opportunity ... read more

The Other Half knew that disappointed was the understatement of 2017, as to my mood on how the football viewing had gone over the festive season. She tentatively agreed to my plan for the diversion off the M1 into the previously unexplored town of Ossett. However, I still sensed the “do we really have to?” face as I turned right from Junction 40. Traffic was light and it seemed that the locals were sleeping off their excesses on New Years Eve. It was a mere 5 minutes into the town centre, so there was no time for me to be dissuaded. I circumnavigated the centre in search of a parking place. The council car parks provided the free answer. “Free of Charge on Sundays & Bank Holidays, except Good Friday”.There were only 2 other vehicles in ... read more

Well, back to India after 30 years away. Trying to recall what happened back then....all a blur now! I was persuaded to go again by some friends of over 40 years standing (but mostly sitting or lying down) who wished to go before they got any older. These friends consist of Mal, from Liverpool, whose husband is too ill to join us, so she will be leaving early in order to be with him at Christmas. Also a retired couple, Bill & Shirl, and their recently adopted grandchildren, Rocco (9) and Esmee (6). We are going for the month of December (but only 3 weeks for Mal). We have bought our return flights through Finnair, so a stopover at Helsinki is on the cards, but we'll only have a chance to see the city on our ... read more

The wind of yesterday when we were travelling has died away and the day has dawned looking very promising to be out and about. After breakfast Gretchen got the washing done and hung out on the clothes line to take advantage of the sunny weather. She was sure it would be nicely dry by the time we got back from a trip out in the countryside that Rhona was about to take us on. We drove up to the Chevin Ridge, the highest point around the Leeds area at 282 metres above sea level, and stopped at the lookout known as Surprise View. Rhona said that on a clear day you can see York Minster away to the east. However, today, although it was fine there was a haze that meant that anything that far away ... read more

After such a large dinner last night it really doesn’t seem right this morning to be going down to the dining room for a full English breakfast. Thank goodness they spread the breakfast time out from between 8.30am and 10am.We are going to leave it until after 9am before going down for breakfast this morning to give more time for last night’s dinner to be digested. The full English was just that with black pudding, baked beans etc etc, the works!Very tasty but filling. We certainly won’t need much for lunch today if anything at all. My cousin Rhona lives in Pudsey which is located between Leeds and Bradford and we will try and get to her more suburban location by skirting the other large town of Huddersfield which lies just off the M62. Walked up to where the others were staying, through Arncliffe Wood, had a slight detour to Osmothersly, due to my bad navigating, before joining the wise ones on Scarth Wood Moor. - only a few extra miles! The moorland through North Yorkshire were beautiful, with flowering heather and blueberries ready for eating. We followed the track, mostly paved to prevent erosion, over Live Moor and up onto Carlton Moor. Numerous fighter jets roared over the top of us, making me think of Tomorrow when the War Began... The steep descent down to the road was followed by a perfect spot for lunch – at Lord Stones. Cringle Moor was the next destination and then another descent and ascent up to the Wain Stones, a scramble up the side of the mountain ( wrong track) and Hasty ... read more

Today was the longest walk of the trip, at 28 miles, or 45 km. We just kept at it, and completed the day in 8 1/2 hours. We started off from Richmond on the bitumen, but were soon back on the dirt tracks and into fields of wheat, barley and canola, never far from the Swale. There was a detour just before the A1, adding a mile or so on to the trip, crossing the freeway on a new pedestrian bridge. At Bolton-on-Swale! we visited the churchyard which holds the memorial to Henry Jenkins, who supposedly lived to be 169. We had a refreshing tea and biscuits inside, for morning tea. Shortly afterwards, we left the lush green fields and springy track, followping roads for several miles - very hard on the feet! At Danby Wiske, ... read more
