A couple of house keeping issues. We are in or near Stanbury and Ponden but they don’t rally register on many maps let alone travel websites. And I don’t have a proof reader and Julie has pointed out a few errors post publication. Sorry. Anything that does make sense just make up yourself. And great job Ella. Two people on the planet know that the ‘glorious twelfth’ is the official opening of the grouse season. Ella continues a rich tradition of taking out quiz questions and has continued where she left off. I think I dismissed her comment without sort of knowing so if it doesn’t post sorry. I’ve been chastened by Julie so I’ll never do it again. On that note. We walked past a hidden direction marker this morning and overshot the path a ... read more

With the end of their holiday drawing nigh Janet and Jill have been running their food stocks down so we had to go out for breakfast this morning. What a hardship?! We’ve been having fruit, Shreddies and toast since we arrived so this morning I splurged on the pancakes with berry compote and Greek yogurt while Bernie went the full English breakfast ... without the mushrooms. Yum! Because the weather forecast for today was a bit ordinary (cloudy with showers) we decided to stay local and ride the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway which is running steam locomotives all weekend. It turns out we probably didn’t need to worry about photographing the steam train yesterday as there were to be plenty of opportunities today. The K&WVR is a five mile branch line that runs from Keighley ... read more

Once upon a time, the most famous cycle race in the world came to a small town in Yorkshire. They raced up the cobbled High Street. The Bronte sisters - Haworth's most famous former residents - couldn't have written the script better. The parking script couldn't have been better for us either. The woes of public trasnport the previous day had clearly caused a move towards the car, but at 9 o'clock - some 4 hours before the race was due through - it was easy to get right into town. The cobbles of the High Street would be destined to become one of the iconic photos of the race, but they were surprisingly empty. The talk yesterday had suggested that there would be a mass covergence on the town, but there had clearly been a ... read more

The first half of today was ecstatic, riding through the Yorkshire Dales was beautiful, they were open and wild and a few reservoir's and dams up there made the scenery top notch. Traffic was limited and plenty of time just to float and look around. A friendly bike rider said go down X road then there is a good café - and he was right. The reservoir man He does what he does whenever he can Scanning across his giant bath He lets out a full bodied, echoing laugh Hidden here in his perfect place He dances, spiralling, with energy and grace And then singing Opera at the top of his voice '' I am the reservoir man and I have the choice'' The giant taps they work only for him To twist or not - ... read more

Today we went rambling over the old Wycoller Estate. This was a destination that I discovered on the Internet after watching an episode of 'Grand Designs' where they undertook a barn conversion. During the show they visited the barn restoration at Wycoller and, when I Googled it, I discovered that we would be in the area when we visited Haworth. I let Janet know about it and between her and her Aunty Kathleen we ended up with a wealth of information to guide us. We started the walk at Pendle's Panopticon. This is a modernistic structure that represents a molecule. In its sides are rounded apertures from which atoms have supposedly tumbled to their fate in the peaty waters of Wycoller Beck far below!!? There is supposed to be one atom (or maybe just a stainless ... read more

We left Bernie at home this morning and Janet, Jill and I headed off to the Brontë Parsonage Museum. I can't think why Bernie wasn't interested in that???! Just before we entered the museum, Jill received a text to say that her nephew had arrived at Keighley station and was ready to be picked up. Jill headed back to the house to press Bernie into service for a drive to Keighley, while Janet and I proceeded with our visit to the museum. The Brontës are arguably the world's most famous literary family and Haworth Parsonage, now the Brontë Parsonage Museum, was their home from 1820 to 1861. Earlier this year I read Charlotte's novel Jane Eyre (1847), Emily's Wuthering Heights (1847), and Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848) which were written in the parsonage over ... read more

Although I am still at an age where an approaching birthday isn't cause for concern, this year my birthday marked exactly one year since I said goodbye to so many loved ones after a night of cocktails and dining at Brewery Wharf in Newcastle. So unsurprisingly I was feeling alittle fragile about the whole event. It was an absolute thill then when our dear friends Lara and Sean planned a visit to Leeds to celebrate with us! It is always wonderful to meet up with this gorgeous pair who have been based in London for 2 years. We've not been able to see eachother as much as hoped since ariving in the UK so this was a lovely opportunity to spend some quality time together doing some hard-core catching up! As is typically the fashion in ... read more

We woke up this morning to another of the perks of staying a hotel: a hot traditional English breakfast. Now, I'll admit I didn't touch the fried tomato or mushroom (mostly for lack of time) but I have to say, fried toast with beans is brilliant. I rather like it. And for the record, Kellogg's Crunchy Nut cereal needs to be in America. Now. I am eating as much of it as I can get here, but I don't know what I'm going to do when I get back to the states. Breakfast didn't get over until later than anticipated--we were supposed to leave for the second half of our Pennine Way journey at 8 am, but didn't actually leave until 8:40. We had to get to Haworth by 2:00 pm, and we still would ... read more
