Welcome to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens ! I discovered these gems of Botanical Gardens two years ago after attending a fair at the Birmingham NEC and was I in for a pleasant surprise ! They are of course much smaller in scale and variety than places such as Kew Gardens, though 15 acres in size, but they are definitely well worth a visit especially at Springtime. They are located in Edgbaston, a few miles away from Birmingham in a very leafy residential area. They were created by leading Gardener J. C. Loudon and opened to the public in 1832. At the time of my visit, the Botanical Gardens were holding a very interesting exhibition on the life and work of Charles Darwin. Here are a few pictures of my visit to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens in ... read more

Woolly says – So very very sad, we were heading for Ghent and were now in Stourbridge!!!!!!! How come…. We set off to visit Brugge on the way to Ghent, Jo was not feeling too well and after four miles on the road with severe winds nearly sending us over we pulled up. We sat for a short while in silence before Ian and I decided that something needed to be done! Contacting Jo’s consultant the decision became easy, get to the ferry. We headed the ten miles through terrible wind conditions to Zeebrugge and booked onto the 6pm crossing. We sat and waited at the port in tears of dismay but knowing that we were being sensible. TWO ferries in less than a week I thought it could be exciting, The Pride of York was ... read more

I have always enjoyed reading travel blogs. Most travel blogs I read are produced by friends who have the fortune of being able to afford the opportunity to visit far away lands. These blogs are mostly entertaining and I enjoy getting the views and opinions of these wonderful places from people I have enjoyed company with and who are good friends and people (I would like to just mention a friend called Oliver Nawrat, who's blogs have built an eagerness to go and visit Thailand, how you doing fella?). Apart from a few trips to Ireland, a wonderful trip to Ontario in Canada to visit family, and a fun trip to Austria and Poland to play football, My own travel resume isn't impressive. However, one day, I do wish to have the opportunity to visit some ... read more

Following the signs for North Wales we were making good progress to rendezvous with Zoe at Porthmadog……. Woolly says – well we were until the Sat Nav took us onto a left turn, as the roads got narrower and narrower Ian and Georgie were not impressed and when we were forced to follow a diversion into even narrower lanes things were not looking good. Sensibly they decided to ignore the Sat Nav and we eventually found our way back onto the A487. We made it with ten minutes to spare!!!!! It was brilliant to see Zoe again, she hasn’t changed at all, even her greeting of ‘Oh god the rat’s still here’ was a joy to my ears and I know that Jo and Ian were delighted to see her again. Pointing Georgie back the way ... read more

Due to the conditions we have had and weather to come it’s time to get away!!! We’re taking the Motorhome to Manchester airport and parking it up for a month and heading to the much sunnier climate of Alyana, Turkey. The plan is to spend some time in Alyana before hiring a car and heading off for a tour round Turkey. If time allows we will jump on a ferry to Cypress!!!! Packed and ready to go, will keep you posted. Woolly says – I’m a very happy Mammoth, have packed my bucket and spade and sun hat. I love flying and just hope there’s a good film to watch on the flight – Ice Age 4 would be great. ... read more

An interesting first night on the road. We had arranged to stop on the car park at the Sir John Houblon Pubin Bishop's Stortford. We were made so welcome and had a brilliant meal at a reasonable price. Having decided that we didn't like the fixed rear bed and confined space, we made the move onto the middle beds - yes I did break the bed while trying to put it up - woke up with headaches from sleeping on a slope. Good practice in using the chocks to level the van up. Very warm and cosy and breakfast, although in a confined space was a doodle. Woolly says – I really enjoyed my meal of Sausage and homemade mash a really good option on the children’s menu.... read more

What a week. The past 7 days have been both amazing and emotional. I'm down to the final preparations, which have been a lot more complicated than they should have been. For starters, it has only recently occured to me that I am taking a rucksack, not a suitcase, and that my luggage padlocks have nowhere to attach. I have therefore spent much time agonising over other options. The very helpful man working in Mountain Warehouse recommended a "drybag". This is essentially a posh and thicker bin bag to put your rucksack into. This can then be secured with the normal padlocks. Downside: all is takes is a thief with a pair of scissors and the contents of my bag is all theirs. Option 2 - discovered in Blacks - a wire "mesh" that covers the ... read more

So, the countdown has officially begun. Thought I'd start the travel blog before I actually start travelling so as to capture how much more nervous and equally excited I get over the coming weeks. To be honest, I thought I'd feel more nervous/excited by now. Maybe it hasn't really hit me yet despite this week marking 2 real "final countdown moments". Leaving Work At the grand old age of 27 I thought I'd be making my way up the career ladder at pace, well on my way to a job for which I have to wear a suit, have a P.A fetching me tea and telling me where to be and when, and have "business lunches". Instead, I have put all that on hold. My whole career - postponed whilst the young person in me decides ... read more

What a little gem!!!! What can I say? I feel a little lost for words trying to find the right things to say about Wightwick Manor. How did we end up visiting. Well it sort of came out of the blue. We had been out and about on Saturday and today was going to be a day of doing very little. A visit to the optician and a flu jab appointment booked . Having suffered from swine flu a few years ago I had no intention of suffering again. We had a few wreaths to take to graves at Telford and then planned to have dinner in the Bridge Builder before coming home. After lunch we suddenly had this rather good isea of travelling the 24 miles from Telford to the heart of the Black Country ... read more

September 10 Coventry to Ballinasloe - I got up early and got ready and took my stuff downstairs to load up and go to the train station in Rugby. Con took me to the station and I caught the train from Rugby to Holyhead via Crewe. I was disappointed that they had no internet on the first train and on the second one they wanted me to pay for it. Maybe I am spoiled but I have grown accustomed with wifi being free, and feel annoyed and cheated when it is not. In any case the trip wasn’t bad although I had to hustle a bit to catch the connection in Crewe and at Holyhead. The ship I took was the Stena Adventurer and it was a nice and big ship with bars, restaurants and even ... read more
