Fling 2
Back: Lisa, Harp, Jackie, Tristan
Front: Ange, Maddy, Sam Home....it's always good to sleep in your own bed once again and not crashing on someone's floor. 😊 Although I am very good at sleeping just about anywhere, a bed with pillows and familiar blankets and things is way more inviting.
This weekend rocked! I have never been to a more mellow frisbee tournament. It was fantastic and everyone had a great time. (BEWARE: this is a gigantic entry)
We left at 7:15am on Saturday, 5 Nov and headed to Birmingham's NIA (Nat'l Indoor Arena) for Indoor Regionals. The setup there wasn't so fantastic, the tourney at Clifton was much better (and closer) but I at least got to see part of B'ham! It takes about an hour and a half to get there from Nott'm but it wasn't too bad a drive at all. We played about 4 or 5 games on Saturday, losing them all but fighting really hard and learning lots of new things. Tristan rolled his ankle in one of the games and was out for pretty much the rest of the day. He came back to play on Sunday but by Sunday night he considered himself 'crippled'. However, he is having surgery on both

Back: Ben, Jeff,James, Biscuit, Laura
Front: Fish, Dan, Tat ankles in January when he gets back to UBC. Saturday after playing all day, we showered at NIA (oh how I hate communal showers!! but to be clean is worth it I suppose.) and headed to Laura's house, which is about 5 minutes from the venue. Her house is sooo nice, I want to live there! And her mom had just baked almond flapjacks (mouth watering!!) and oat cake, brownies, etc for a Bonfire Night celebration. There was so much that we ate it on Sunday too! For dinner we all headed over (all 23 of us) to Pizza Express. It was really good and fun to eat carbs and talk to everyone. After dinner we headed to a nearby pub. The first one we went to was more like a club atmosphere and was packed so we decided to find a more mellow, old-man type pub. We ended up at the New Inn which was exactly what we were looking for. Oh and I forgot to mention that it was really cold and we walked everywhere. Anyways, we were at the pub for a bit and then we headed back to Laura's house. (By the way, the first team

Back: Nimble, Dom, Jelley, Tef
Front: Stu, Craig, Rocky, Rod, Muppet stayed at Ben's house--we didn't cram 23 people into one house.) At Laura's there was still a bit of a bonfire happening so we hung about and they roasted marshmallows. The marshmallows here are much smaller than the US but then again most everything is smaller here. No marshmallows for me....I had way too many smores over the summer to not like them much anymore. Then someone brought out sparklers which were really fun so everyone got one or two...there were lots! The end of a great day....
Sunday saw another fairly early morning it seemed but not as early as Sunday mornings at tourneys with SC. Our first game was at 10:20 or something so we got up past 8am. Laura's parents had made sausages and bacon for us with croissants, cereal, fruit and all sorts of jelly, honey, nutella, etc. It was a definite smorgasbord! And they even let us make sandwiches for the afternoon which was really nice. It was another long day of hard work and fun playing. I had so much fun and we happened to win a few games today as well. 😊 I played really hard and at one point during a
game I seemed to be the only one trying to crack the zone apart in the endzone. I needed some help but no matter how hard I tried to coax people to help it couldn't be done. I did have some really nice grabs from out of nowhere which kind of surprised myself but were really cool too. So all in all Sunday was fabulous. Oh! and Fling 1 was awesome and came in second... that game really pumped up Fling 2 and we went out there and played for all it was worth. But it was so much better because it was actually fun and not stressful at all.
Final results:
Fling 1 got second place and are headed to indoor nationals!!
Fling 2 came in 18th, just missing the spoon.
Fling 3 came in 24th (last place).
However the standings really don't show how hard everyone played...a lot of the scores were really close and it was such an amazing weekend!!
Since I put up a ton of pics and loads of people go by their nicknames, I thought I'd inform everyone as to who's who. Then you can decide if people fit their birth
name or their nickname.
FLING 1
Muppet: Simon aka coach (nickname comes from something to do with his last name??)
Teflon (or Tef): Mark (has issues having things stick to him or having his feet stay on the ground while playing frisbee--which means you'll usually find him in the mud)
Nimble: Graham or Mr. Wilson--he's a teacher (got his nickname from playing badminton with Ange)
Rocky: Robin (nicknamed after the song Rocky Robin)
Stu: short for Stuart
Rod
Dom: short for Dominic
Craig
FLING 2
Ange: short for Angela
Sam: short for Samantha
Maddy: short for Madeleine
Harp (I'm pretty sure that's his birth name)
Tristan
Lisa
Jackie: short for Jacqueline
FLING 3
Fish: Helen (she was really aggressive at sport in school, like a battlefish)
Tat: short for Natasha
Biscuit: Rich T (like the biscuits, Rich Tea)
Jeffro: Jeff (he's from Arkansas folks, kinda self-explanatory)
Laura
Ben
James
Dan
Ok I think that's everyone. We all don't have nicknames yet but when they are all figured out, as I'm sure they will be, then I'll let you all know. 😊
Random thoughts:
Ok so to clarify...I'm cool with fireworks and actually like
Tef's Gun Show
Tef, Where's the beach?? watching them. But for some reason the fireworks in the UK are so much louder than others....I don't know it's hard to explain. I do realize however that Bonfire Night is a big deal and is supposed to be tons of fun. And in the end I have gotten used to the sound of fireworks now....and apparently guns are illegal in the UK so I have nothing to worry about?? I"ll take your word Char. Anyways, a happy birthday to Richard and I hope everyone had a great time burning Guy Fawkes' in effigy once again....on the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot. Cheers!
