With the weather forecast brilliant again today we headed off over the Howden Moors in the Peak District National Park towards Brodsworth, near Doncaster. Bernie has paired his phone with the SatNav in the Golf using Apple CarPlay so we’ve got the navigation sorted. Thank goodness Siri is telling him where to go and not me. I don’t know why, but he is so much more patient with Siri than he is with me! We were directed onto the A628 towards Tintwistle. Actually, Siri and the road signs said to follow the route towards Sheffield, I just wanted to record that we passed through Tintwistle! There is a series of reservoirs in the valley alongside the A628 and we could not believe how low the water is. We have never seen any English reservoirs so low ... read more

Today was a day of two halves. A house the first half and the garden the second. I have a plan. My plan is to go somewhere every week. My plan includes drawing a circle of about 50 miles from our home. 50 miles takes us about 35 minutes of travel. My plans include finding somewhere different to go to every week or so. So last week we went to Worksop to the lovely house of Mr Straw. Today the sun was beaming down, summer has arrived and I was in the books around the house trying to find something to see and something to do. Two choices came to mind - the first was to go to Abbeydale Hamlet in Sheffield. A bit of industrial history. The other choice Brodsworth Hall an English Heritage house ... read more

This time tomorrow I'll (hopefully) be in the air, enjoying the in-flight entertainment & catering provided by Qatar Airways, and well on the way on leg one of the trip. I was asked if I was nervous or apprehensive about it all. Honest answer has to be no. I'm not nervous or apprehensive, there are little bugs that I think about but it's nothing that will stop me sleeping tonight (although I'll be keeping a notebook & pen at the side of the bed for the middle of the night wake-ups for things not to forget, just in case!). I was also asked if I was excited. I don't feel it at the moment. At the station tomorrow might be different, transferring at Doha different again, and by the time I arrive in Nairobi on Thursday ... read more

This time next week I'll be on a plane heading (in a roundabout sort of way) to Nairobi to start my trip. As so often, what you think is an age away has all of a sudden jumped up and said "right, we off then?". There are a list of jobs at work to complete, a list of things I still need to pack, a long list of documents I need to print, and somewhere or other I need to find where my good small camera has gone. Fortunately, the big job is done - my rucksack is packed with the essentials, weighed and measured, and shouldn't cause any problems at check in. I have a long-standing habit of failing to pack lightly, so getting two and a half months worth of travelling kit into a ... read more

November '09: Newsflash: The Big Boy is tying the knot again - third time lucky, you might say. And this could be my chance to redeem myself - to offset the mordant humour and persecution of Namibian over the previous blog entries. It could have been, but where is the fun in that?… That terrible old curmudgeon ( my dear old friend, Namibian) is settling, once again, for suffering until death. Well, it shouldn’t last long, then - six more birthdays is the time span I estimate before expiry. Anyway, Namibian is finally making an honest woman out of long-standing partner, Janet. And I, obviously, am the best man. ‘I know it’s a long way for you to come,’ croaks Namibian on the telephone, ‘so I’ve got you a hotel room…and a woman for the night.’ ... read more

Angie... Well 6 weeks worth of planning is now complete!! I am now a qualified sorcerers apprentice, Alan Sugar's Apprentices eat your heart out. We can beat the Apprentices hands down! The Norway trip is booked, planned and we are ready for off. Thank you to Karen Marks for putting in a very innovative travel award grant and ensuring that this was comprehensive, cohesive and a well structured business plan by setting the purpose and parameters. This would not have been as easy to initiate without the foundation stones in place. Well done Karen. But the next time she goes off sick in the middle of this she won't be able to come. Well done and thank you to Lyndsey for being the Google queen, and finding everything from a hotel with a hairdryer to a ... read more

Hello everyone...how are you all....well I am now in Doncaster which is in Yorkshire. I am staying with a friend Margaret but have just come in to town by myself to get some shopping done. She has bad asthma and can't get around easily. Just found this internet cafe by accident. Yesterday we went to a big country estate, Chatsworth House owned by the Duke and Duchess of Derbyshire. Guess what? while I was pushing Margaret round in a wheelchair we ran into the Duchess and I met her! I even managed to get a photo of her as well! The tour was great though as I keep saying....hectic. I just love driving down through the Bremmer Pass in Austria and the Dolomites in northern Italy were amazing. Italy was my favourite country.....Venice was lovely if ... read more
