Where in the world is Gabby? Where in the world is Suzy? Today I find myself thinking about a Heinz 57 variety of inane facts . Nothing substantial. Nothing that makes sense . I think about the clocks changing. It was lighter for a few weeks in the mornings after the change but pretty soon the darkness descended on us again, It was just dusky at night but now it is dark by 4.30 with worse to come,. It's a plate dropping day. A day of leaving my membership card at the swimming pool. a day of worry about our girl Gabby. You know that sort of day. It is cold and miserable outside . You cannot think of anything to do. Every National Trust property have closed their doors for a bit of stocktaking and ... read more

What better place to be on Yorkshire Day than Yorkshire? I find myself heading north to south on the M1 and turned off into Barnsley. I think I have been to Barnsley 3 or 4 times in my life before – always for football - but never really looked round the town centre. I think my last visit was possibly in 1989 - a 4 – 0 defeat in the FA Cup. Cup Fever was cancelled for another year. It was Freddy Freestone’s swansong in a Chelsea shirt, albeit he took a few months to make his way home to Swansea. I can distinctly remember a cold, cold Friday night in the early 1980s too. In those days, town centres on away days were a dangerous place and the usual sightseeing was determined by exactly where ... read more

It's true what they say about being bitten by the travel bug. Many years have passed since the last entry on this site but in the time since then we've had many amazing trips. Self-drives through Western Canada, Jordan and the Baltic Nations, backpacks on for adventures through Turkey, Sri Lanka and back to India, and many little breaks into Europe. The travel bug even got me working in the industry, with an amazing team in the Leeds office of Austravel. But with the age of 31 rapidly approaching, Amy and I decided to do the full on trip once again, but this time take advantage of the Working Holiday Visa scheme of Australia. So off we go again... this time for a full year - taking in Dubai, Oman and Hong Kong before arriving in ... read more

I never thought I would end up blogging about Barnsley! Every year fans of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club gather for the final game of the football season. This has become known as the Seagulls Flying Squad and this year's host club was Barnsley. Oh well, we shrugged off the disappointment and booked our flights back from Vietnam anyway. Now, most people would probably not think of Barnsley as a place for a weekend away, let alone an excuse to fly back from Canada, Malaysia or Vietnam. We were pleasantly surprised with what we saw, but horrified as the temperatures struggled to reach five degrees! Don't knock it. The Premier Inn is very well located and pretty cheap - unlike the bar next door. Still, when you buy a round for 10 or so people ... read more

It was time to move again. We were booked onto a site in Ashbourne Derbyshire in a few days so needed to find somewhere in between Ripon and Ashbourne. Now I’m not sure if many of you have studied the area on the map between Ripon and Derbyshire, but lets just say that spoilt for choice are not the words I would use to describe it. Leeds, Bradford, Doncaster and Rotherham were just a few of the many delightful choices we had. We settled on a site just a few miles from Barnsley. Now I know what you’re probably thinking, but the site was tucked away in the middle of the countryside on a farm. If you didn’t have to leave the site then you would never guess where you were. Once we were set up ... read more

This is my first taste of backpacking so have decided to go to Malaysia for 2 weeks!!!! Well the time has finally arrived.my 2 weeks short backpacking trip to Malaysia. I finished work early and rushed home to get quick bath grab travel bag and then race for the 2.20pm train to kings cross station. Arrived in London 2 ½ hours later then had to find my way to the Gatwick shuttle from kings cross. Not an easy feat I must say in blistering heat and a large bag. I managed to hobble over the streets to the station anyway and make my way to Gatwick airport. Plenty of time for the flight so I think a nice cold beer is on the cards when I arrive there.... read more
