Back in the icy UK. Flights all went as smoothly as can be expected. All still in one piece this end. Wonder how much longer this particular beautiful corner of the south west will be classed as home? Not long me thinks. Thanks for following me on the latest set of trails. Now to have a chat with my brain and see if I can work out which time zone we think we're in...it's either 10am or 11pm but not sure it feels like either and not sure it makes a difference either way really...... read more

Well, we have started training and it could be going better. We've had a couple of walks with our monthly group which have been really great. Sarah Drake, Sue Winter and myself started at The White Hart at Weston In Gordano one morning when there was still quite a lot of snow around, it was very cold. We left The White Hart and started walking across the moors towards the motorway and as we were walking, the sun started to come out and was melting some of the snow. It was quite hard going over the fields that were rutted and Sue twanged her knee. We saw lots of wildlife though which was great, there seemed to be loads of birds about. We even saw a peacock in someones garden! When we got to Caswell Lane ... read more

Long, long day of flights lands the wanderer back at heathrow. Then a drive to Surrey and a longer drive back to Clevedon leaves one rather spent. Not much sleep last night in Kathmandu due to the constant yapping and howling street-hounds. An 05:30 start, then the queues of Kathmandu airport, then efficient queues through Delhi airport and then Heathrow means my body thinks it's now 05:30 again (Kathmandu time) so I guess that's a full 24 hours of travel but I'm not confident my brain is doing the maths right at the moment so I'm going to go to bed and see if that still makes sense in the "morning". Another adventure completed. Sad to be back. Glad to be back. So looking forward to waking in my own bed in the morning. So missing ... read more

Been still from a travelling perspective for three weeks (since return from a stolen weekend in Paris) so it must be time to go again. Across to the south east in preparation for a flight from gatwick to Oslo tomorrow lunchtime, then on to Tromso the next day in the hope of catching not only some wonderful snowy adventures with dogs and snow mobiles and the like but also a glimpse or two of the northern lights. Stop off in Oslo again on the way back, then on to Copenhagen for a few days while 2012 arrives and then back to the UK for a few days of landing time before some time to plan the next adventure.... read more

And so the next adventure begins. The months of life at low altitude since returning from the Kilimanjaro trip have passed. The weeks in amongst the garbage and the city lights (sic), the endless days in the hyperoxic air of near sea level have been creeping by, my mind and lungs yearning to be away up high, away from where there's too much, away to where the nearest bit of man's so-called progress is distant. Tomorrow, the trip begins. Heathrow by Friday evening, arrive Addis Ababa early Saturday morning. Fly to Gondar on Sunday and the first six days in the Simien Mountains, culminating in an ascent of Ras Dashen - the highest mountain in Ethiopia (4,550m / 14,928ft). Then back to Gondar for a blissful night in a wee hotel and then back to Addis ... read more

Tuesday evening. Three days until I fly. Another visit to the familiarly bland launching pad of Heathrow on Friday evening. Land in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Saturday morning and then on to Kilimanjaro airport (Tanzania) by Saturday lunchtime. On to Marangu for the night in preparation for a drive up to Nale Moru (6,397ft) and hike up to 8,530ft for the first night's camping (Sunday 12th). Hike up to Kikelewa Caves (11,811ft) for the second night (Monday 13th). Hike up to Mawenzi Tarn (14,206ft) for the third night (Tuesday 14th). Hike across the lunar desert of the saddle to Kibo to camp under the Kibo Crater wall (15,419ft) and try to grab any sleep possible before summit day. Thursday 16th - summit day. Begin the ascent at midnight and march up through the moonlight aiming for the ... read more
