When my parents were here a few weeks ago, they told me to find a good day trip for us. After doing a bit of research, I decided to plan a day in Bath. I started to look into different tour options but ultimately decided that the best (and affordable) way to do it was to travel on our own. So, we took a train from Paddington Station to Bath Spa. It was a smooth, scenic ride that took just a couple hours. Once we arrived, it was only 10 minutes to the city center. We had just enough time to have some lunch before we joined in one of the city's free walking tours. The walking tours are put on by volunteer guides, and ours was really knowledgeable. Although we did not enter any of ... read more

The plan had its genesis when the adverts came on the telly. Flopped out on the settee, feet up on the pouffe, I had downed a couple of cans of beer. Inevitably, nature had taken its course and I felt a nagging need to be elsewhere. In the busy lives we lead today it's sometimes difficult to find time to just take off and indulge one's urge to get away but I reckoned I had at least 2 minutes before 'Murder, She Wrote' resumed and, having had the notion, I couldn't shift it - by hook or by crook I was going upstairs to the bathroom. As I write this, I'm lying on my couch in the States, awake ridiculously early from the jet lag. Yep, I've procrastinated so much that I'm now almost 2 months behind. My Englad adventures are over. However, now I can stop having adventures (although I am going to Baton Rouge today...) and finish writing about them. The pictures are all taken, the museums are all experienced... now I just have to be coherent. So come back with me to mid-September to a charming little town known as Bath. When I was planning my trip to England and knew that I'd be spending most of my time in the Cotswolds, I assumed that my first two stops would be Bath and Stratford-upon-Avon. Well, I didn't go to Bath until I'd been there for 3 months, and Stratford ... read more

This I promise will be a very short blog! Getting to know England further.....and this time it was Bath. A beautiful city with so much history and is also a World Heritage City . Baths history commences in approximately 1 AD when the Romans thought it would be a great place to set up an outpost to their empire- a little bit far from Rome but nonetheless they left their imprint on the city. Bath was a fortified city which contained a spectacular Bath 'complex' dedicated to the 'gods' who were the only ones who could produce hot springs!! They are the only hot springs in England! The complex was later built over and ruined for many hundreds of years after the romans left (approx 60AD). Bath's second high-profile era was the eighteenth century, when the ... read more

Our first vacation —yeah! We went 3 hours west to visit the Roman Baths in Bath. What a beautiful city. The river Avon runs right through the middle of town. Magnificent architecture is seen throughout the city with the Royal Crescent, the Roman Bath house, and Bath abbey being the most notable. When we arrived in Bath our first stop was the site of the Roman Baths. They are situated right in the city center. We were able to do a self guided tour and it was very informative. I wouldn’t suggest bathing in them anymore however—the water is a murky green color The water that fills the bath is from a natural hot spring and the temperature is about 46C (115F). It is full of 43 minerals and a bit of iron that causes an ... read more

In his book, London 2007, the travel writer, Rick Steves, describes Bath as the perfect weekend getaway from London. He said it is easy to tour the city on foot (true) and there is plenty to see and do. Bath has a great nightlife and good small restaurants that are not too expensive. He praised the Georgian architecture (we Yanks call it Colonial style), especially John Wood’s complex of buildings which form a Circus (circle) and Royal Crescent (half moon shape). A few days before our trip we watched a documentary about John Wood in which the host ecstatically praised Wood’s architectural achievement in Bath. So we were prepared for an interesting, fun weekend. When we actually saw Wood's Circus and the adjoining Royal Crescent, we were quite disappointed. The facades of most of the houses ... read more

Geo: 51.3814, -2.35745Up early, the pilgrims made their way to Paddington Station. Barb was especially fond of the place, taking a photograph to share with her kids. Jake noticed a marked difference in the air quality of diesel powered trains versus electric trains. After a breakfast of random things (we needed fuel), we found our platform and boarded the Great Western train headed toward Bath. 1-1/2 hours later, we pulled into "Bath Spa" and into a beautiful, less urban town. The skies were as blue as they have been for the whole trip. We made our way to the Roman Baths that were constructed in the 100's on a site that the Anglo-Saxons had considered sacred due to the continual bubbling up of hot water from the bowels of the earth. The Romans said, "hey, let's ... read more

Here we are at Thursday, of the Angela and Larissa "take the UK by storm" tour! After our wild night tracking Orlando Bloom, we decided it was time to sleep in, and that we did! It was really a remarkable idea, and we both really enjoyed not waking up at 7 or 8. Our plan was to head to Bath by train, which we knew would take about 90 minutes and bring us to a famous part of England. The train trip was once again a nice journey and we "alighted" and followed the signs. It is so easy to find these places by train, which is really a nice thing. You just hop off and there you are it seems! The first thing we came upon was the Cathedral, so that's where we began. ... read more

6/25/07 “ I have the map right here.” It is our last night in London. Scott and Will and watching Lord of the Rings, nothing new there…they do that every weekend. Justin and I are reading our books in bed and in anticipation of getting our new car and going Bath in the morning, I ask Scott if he knows how to get there. He replies….”Of course I do, I have the map right here.” Justin and looked at each other and burst out laughing. Justin said that the map was why we have spent so many days lost in London. How right he was. Now, here is the part where Scott and I are so different. (And why we will kill each other before ever returning to the USA) He has his head in ... read more

Or, a "mini-break" and Bridget Jones would call it. After a full week’s work, it was definitely time to get out of London for a while. The destination was Bath, somewhere I have always wanted to go. The first stop on the tour was Stonehenge. Hmm, Adam and I found the whole Stonehenge thing quite confusing. We knew that we were supposed to be amazed and marvel at this world heritage listed prehistoric site, but seriously, are they kidding? I am not going to say anything more for fear of being a disrespectful, but for those of you who have been and marvelled…please explain? Anyway, quite fittingly, after standing on tippy-toes to take a photo over the barbed wire fence, the batteries in our camera died and being in the middle of nowhere - just ... read more
