We had a fantastic day today with ASE going around the English countryside to see Stonehenge, Sailsbury and Lacock (where Meryton has been filmed for P&P). Stonehenge was very nice and we got there before the huge crowd did which was nice. Next we went to Salisbury and saw the Salisbury Cathedral. It is a beautiful Gothic church and we got to see one of the original four Magna Cartas. after the afternoon in Salisbury we travel to Lacock to see the Abby and the village. It is a lovely village which has been persevered and owned by the National trust. The Abby has been used in several Harry Potter movies like the Chapter House which used as Professor McGonagall's classroom and where Harry discovers the mirror of Erised and the Warming Room which is Professor ... read more

Last night we went out to the Victoria Art Gallery with the whole ASE staff. We got to meet our professors thought only one of mine was there. My Shakespeare in performance teacher is Ruth Hazel. She seems very nice but I am still a lil nervous about the class in general. I am no theater person and there are at least 3 theater majors in my class. It was great getting to go around and look at the fantastic art that they have in Bath. I have been having a great time up in the Northamptons though with my wonderful house mates!... read more

Today I had my interview for the Jane Austen Centre! I cant tell you how excited I was to meet all the wonderful people who work there. Jackie is the manager and the person who I will be working with directly. She was so nice and encouraging. She said that I will be giving tours, working in the gift shop and in the tea room. I will also be helping a lot with the Jane Austen Festival that will be coming up in September! I get to dress in Regency clothes, which I am sooo excited about!!!! I start on Monday with my actual internship and so will keep all of you posted on what is going on. BUT soo far... ‘Bath is a charming place, sir; there are so many good shops here.’-- Northanger Abbey ... read more

We are spending a couple of days here in Bath before heading for one night in London. After London we are heading to Glasgow to meet up with Heather Catte. It is going to be nice to see someone from home! Bath is beautiful. The stone here is all a redish cream colour. All of the buildings (even the brand spanking new ones!) are made of this Bath stone. We even coughed up the cash to go inside the Roman Baths today. Believe it or not Alex was glad he spent it! It is amazing to walk on the floor that the ancient Romans and Brits did almost 2000 years ago. Yeah they really let us go right in the old part of the building and touch the structure. I thought they would be more protective ... read more

Well, I was in Bath. Now I'm back home feeling a bit sorry for myself. Today started off well but has rapidly gone downhill as my stomach started acting more like a rollercoaster than the hills I was riding along - I'm sure that's enough detail for you all!! Luckily for me I'd already planned to meet the parents for lunch so they took pity on me and convinced me a night at home wan't cheating and would make me feel much better. So bless him, my poor hardworking Papa will be up at the crack of dawn again tomorrow to take me back to the exact point I gave up today and I'll be back peddalling away again! Day 5, Thursday 7th August: Tiverton to Pilton The rest of yesterday went well, although was very ... read more

In around 800 BC, a Celtic king called Bladud was kicked out of his realm for leprosy. Because he had nowhere else to go, he went off to a place that the locals thought was divine -- hot springs coming up out of the soil He mimicked the swine he had and began to roll around in this mud and, lo and behold, his leprosy disappeared and a town began to build up around the springs as others came to be healed. The Celts continued to worship at the spring as well, building a shrine to the goddess Sulis. When the Romans arrived, they took over the temple. They associated Sulis with Minerva, but not wanting to offend any gods, they continued to worship to both of these fine women. They named the town Aquae Sulis, ... read more

On a bien ... read more

We can't believe it's been a year since we said "I do". In some ways, it seems like just yesterday. In others, it seems we've been married forever. To celebrate our one year anniversary, we decided to take a 3 day trip to the Roman Baths. Mark had made many of the arrangements, including a hot air balloon ride overlooking the Baths. Unfortunately, the weather was uncooperative twice during those crucial hours the pilots make their decisions to fly. Therefore, we were unable to ride. :( We still have our voucher though and hope to be able to use it within the next year. It didn't matter though! We both had an exquisite time. We started Sunday morning with a six hour train ride down to Bath. The train ride was pretty uneventful and a bit ... read more

Our first venture into the English countryside was a day trip to Bath with fellow Melbournites Dannielle and Rob. After a somewhat rocky start to the morning with Dannielle and Rob almost missing the train, and then about a 40 minute delay halfway through the trip, we got to Bath late Sunday morning. The morning started off with a brisk wind, but thankfully after our pub lunch the sun decided to come out. Now, when I thought Bath, I thought of this as a major tourist spot people visit and there must be a few things to do. However, the main thing people really go to see is the Roman Baths and wonder the streets of the world heritage site. It is a beautiful town, very picturesque, but maybe I had too-high expectations of the Romans ... read more
